David Lee Roth, Van Halen's front man? Is it 1984 already?

/yeah, yeah they got back together but at this point who cares

I'd rather it be a group with some fun hits opening instead of some unknown band the record company is trying to get over, or the headliner's cousin's band.

/I saw "Louisiana's LeRoux" open for so many goddamn bands 1978-81ish, and they just didn't have it.
//and apparently they're still around

For some reason, I can tell you off the top of my head that Kool and The Gang's debut single "Kool and The Gang" off their first album Kool and the Gang was a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Black Singles chart. Not sure why I know that, but I do.

/Kool and the Gang

is Foundry Music still semi-NSFW?

2012-02-09 04:40:36 PM
If you're going to see Van Halen in 2012, you really aren't in a position to judge the standards of the opening act.

2012-02-09 04:41:01 PM
Blame hell, that sounds like a great show.

I was going to say what JerseyTim said but I think this is better.

At least David Lee Roth lights the menorah.

Kool & the Gang > (plus about a billion more >) Van farking Halen. fark.

Van Halen should be opening for Kool & the Gang, and by that I mean opening beers and sodas and serving them backstage.

No puppet show?

That's how I first saw Van Halen '78. they were the warm up for Black Sabbath.

/sometimes those warm ups turn out

Ohh ohh ohh, it's too hot (too hot), too hot for teacher,
Gotta run for shelter, gotta run for shade

Saw the commercial promoting this concert/album. All it does is make me feel awkward for them. Having Kool & the Gang open for them is the least of the problems. Just stop, fellas...

2012-02-09 06:28:10 PM
Remember DLRs' old rule:

No blonde lead singer in the opening band.

I'd rather see Kool & the Gang than VH anyday.

If anyone saw the 2007-8 Van Halen reunion tour, they'll get down on their knees and fellate the invisible sky fairy of their choice that the opening act is this time is Kool and the Gang,

Who on EARTH would want to see two classic bands performing together on tour?

Oh, right. I would! This sounds like a blast to me. I'm lowering my expectations to acceptable levels.

If you are male and you like Kool & The Gang you are gay, whether you know it or not.

I could understand a funk band but KOOL & THE GANG????

The problem being the opening act is more dynamic and fun than the headliner.

VH should have found another rock band to open. After Kool & the Gang, VH will come off as quiet, tired, and subdued.

Anyone who has a problem with this simply doesn't know what good music is. Kool and the Gang absolutely farking rules.

People should actually be thanking DLR for this because Kool and the Gang is a killer concert all on its own. It certainly beats listening to some half-baked opening band that a record label payola'd its way onto the lineup.

Just a gigolo
everywhere I go
people know the part
I'm playing

Paid for every dance
selling each romance
every night some heart
betraying

There will come a day
youth will pass away
then what will they say
about me

When the end comes I know
they'll say just a gigolo
as life goes on
without me

'Cause I aint got nobody
nobody nobody cares for me
I'm so sad and lonely
sad and lonely sad and lonely
Won't some sweet mama
come and take a chance with me
cause I aint so bad

Get along with me babe,
been singin love songs
All of the time
Even only be, honey only, only be
Bop bozadee bozadee bop zitty bop

I ain't got nobody 'cept love songs in love
Hummala bebhuhla zeebuhla boobuhla
hummala bebhuhla zeebuhla bop

I ain't got nobody, nobody,
nobody cares for me
Nobody , nobody
I'm so sad and lonely,
sad and lonely,
sad and lonely,
Won't some sweet mama come
and take a chance with me
cause I aint so bad

Get along with me babe,
been singin love songs
All of the time
Even only be, honey only, only be

Please make sure you forward your concerns to the countless rap groups that saw fit to sample Kool and the Gang.

\\Bring a baggie fo yo teef.

Well to be honest, Kool and the Gang was the last black band to have a hit as well, now its sampled to death and the ironic thing is they sample white bands music, full circle I guess.

Screw you haters. The new Cd rocks like hell ( please skip the Tattoo track). Ive got nice, affordable ( $35 ) tickets in the rafters for the first show in Louisville.

I will not go see Van Halen as I saw them in their heyday twice and don't feel like shelling out crazy money to see Dave try to sing the songs.

BUT,

The new record is farking outstanding. It erases the entire "I have no style or charisma and am as interesting as cold oatmeal" Sammy Hagar era.

You might not like David Lee Roth, but he has personality and a sense of humor. These are two things that were lacking from the Van Hagar days. You might HATE the style Roth does have, but at least he has some kind of presence and charisma. Watching and listening to Sammy Hagar is about as interesting as watching bread become toast.

The new record rocks HARD. Eddie hasn't sounded this good in decades. Alex is great. Wolfie is much better than I thought and the lack of Michael Anthony backing vocals is not even noticed.

Several of these songs could easily fit into Fair Warning, Diver Down or Women and Children First.

It is hard to believe these guys are heading toward 60. If you liked or loved Van Halen with Roth the first time around, this record fits right in there as if he never left. Not shiatting you.

The record is that farking good.

As long as neither band plays "Tattoo," it's fine.

At least one of the songs is a redo of an unreleased demo before they were signed. It's alright. Some of it is good, some of it (Tattoo for example) sucks hard.

I just found out there was a new record. Went and sampled some tracks. Oh boy...awful.

I also know my favorite band sucks.

Anyone who says Sammy Hagar doesn't have a sense of humor isn't drunk.

If you've heard the demos from pre-first album, you'd realize they used bits of those demos in several of their songs. There are parts of Mean Streets, Hang 'Em High, Hot For Teacher, Where Have All the Good Times Gone and a lot more on those early demos. Van Halen often went back to early stuff to make "new" songs even during the first incarnation with Roth.

What I like about this new record is that they could have taken the easy route and done a safe reunion album like so many aging bands do. Instead they went balls to the wall and rocked the shiat out of it. Gone is the over-produced compressed guitar sound. The Brown Sound is back. This is a heavy record with a lot of humor. It is a damn good time.
