The man went to Reed College in the 70s. It would have been news if he hadn't used LSD.

So what drug caused the iMac mouse?

That can't be right. I learned here on Fark that drug users are lazy unproductive drains on society.

If you haven't read it, Walter Isaacson's biography of Jobs is an incredible read. The LSD thing is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the eccentricity of this guy's life. For example, he dated Joan Baez for three years. His biological sister (that he met for the first time in his 30s) turned out to be a famous novelist. His biological dad, who abandoned his mom years after they gave Jobs up for adoption, gave up teaching and went on to run restaurants. Eventually Job's sister decided to track him down with a private detective. She did and met him. During their meeting, he explained that he wished she could have seen some of the better restaurants he used to run. He bragged about one restaurant he ran in Silicon Valley -- he said that all the technology guys came there -- "Even Steve Jobs!". Apparently, one day, a man named Steve Jobs came in and had dinner there. His dad knew that Jobs was a techno big-wig, and came out and introduced himself. Neither Jobs nor his dad knew anything about each other; it was only years later that they both found out that that was the first and only time they would ever meet each other.

Great read.

Wow.

Based on that file the FBI is *obsessed* with drugs and Communism.

What year was this done? 1956?

No amount of drugs can equal the brain hemorrhage that resulted in that design being considered "good".

What's with this "Reality Distortion Field" thing?

I can do that any time I want, just kill two six-packs of Heineken and slam down half a liter of good tequila.

I'm reminded that college students today don't remember a world where the US and the USSR had thousands of nuclear warheads pointed at each other and were actively trying to undermine each other's governments.

Good thing the FBI has never been known to inaccurately smear people for one reason or another.

To be fair, Steve Jobs didn't really earn all that wealth and was relatively lazy compared to the people that actually did the work and production that put him on the top. And he did drain the lives out of sweatshop workers.
Ignoring the whole celebrity worship everyone has of him, you could almost call the cancer karmic.

Steve-o's reality-distortion field.

1. Set the theme.
2. Demonstrate enthusiasm.
3. Provide an outline.
4. Make numbers meaningful
5. Try for an unforgettable moment.
6. Create visual slides
7. Give 'em a show
8. Don't sweat the small stuff
9. Sell the benefit
10. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse

In all fairness, he was a George H. Bush special appointee.

It was required as part of a background check for a Presidential appointment, which would be readily apparent had you read the article.

You know the computer surveillance, storage, and analysis power of several US agencies, correct? They're deporting tourists for twitter entries these days. What do you think?

This text is now purple: I'm reminded that college students today don't remember a world where the US and the USSR had thousands of nuclear warheads pointed at each other and were actively trying to undermine each other's governments.

Amazing how easily the hippie organic farmers made the transition from Communist dupes to Taliban sympathizers, isn't it?

I used to love America so much before I smoked LSD and turned gay.

Who hasn't?

Christ, there was a couple of years there where I did either LSD, Mescaline or Mushrooms at least twice a week.

I wouldn't touch the stuff these days, but boy, oh boy did I enjoy it when I was younger. If I smoke some strong weed these days, I get flashbacks sometimes... it's the gift that keeps on giving, I guess.

Typical drug war crap.

The government tried time and time again to use LSD as a type of truth serum, but if you are busted with a certain amount of it, I think one sheet or over, the feds are notified and they start a file on you.

Supposedly from the hippie days backlash, LSD use is considered to be a subversive act.

LSD (or psilocybin or mescaline, etc) serve one great purpose:

To free chained minds from the shackles of a predisposed narrative.

Not everyone needs that and not everyone wants that, but a lot of people who could benefit from it will never know.

Well yeah, regardless of local adjudication, the feds start a file on you. I thought that you'd be in a lot of trouble locally, was self evident.

Read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and find out why... particularly re: The Merry Pranksters and their plan for the 1969 DNC (might have been the RNC--many years since last I read it). The Feds have long memories.

Degenerate Monkey: To free chained minds from the shackles of a predisposed narrative.

Ridiculous psuedo-intellectual crap like that sometimes makes me question my dedication to the end of the drug war....

No, there are no chained minds, there are no shackles and there's no wider meaning to be found through drug use. You just want to get blasted and run around acting stupid. Which is fine. I'm cool with that. I want people to stop pointing guns at you for that.

But let's please not kid ourselves. Humans mess up their minds for primal reasons. It feels good. That's it. There's not some deep artistic merit to it, we're just getting stupid because it releases the right chemicals, nothing more.

Not just that. They also tried to use it to make supersoldiers, with hilarious results.

But i also disagree with what Tim Leary and others said, about it being a free ticket to enlightenment. For many all LSD did was give them a messiah complex, and managed to make them more arrogant than your average teenager naturally is. Something previously believed to be impossible. Steve was probably one of those.

Oh, and the obligatory image macro: i.crackedcdn.com
