This article makes me want to break out the AK-47s and Barrett 50 cal I bought after a 15 minute background check at my local gun store. To defend myself from crazy people like the author.

I'm pretty sure there's no waiting period down here in Louisiana. Or background checks. Went to a gun show with a friend who still had a California drivers license. They could have sold him the gun right then and there, but had to abide by the laws of where ever his ID was from (Cali does have a waiting period and background checks.)

I didn't get all the details, because I didn't care. End result is he didn't get the gun, but could have if he changed is license back to LA.

For long guns? I'm not 100%, but I don't think so. Certainly not here in WA.

And seeing as how no newspaper (or Craigslist I think, don't know for sure as I haven't checked) will accept ads any longer for firearms, that 'loophole' has been closed.


My favorite parking lot story was a few years ago when the Boy Scout Troop that I was involved with bought 15+ .22 rifles from a Scout camp that was upgrading theirs (our Troop has it's own range). We worked out the details while we were at the camp that summer & then once the camp closed for the year we met halfway there in a Walmart parking lot to buy the rifles (beautiful Winchester & Remington WW2 trainers). Imagine if you will two relatively scruffy individuals (myself & the guy keeping me company) sitting in a van when another van pulls up next to them. After a quick round of handshakes from out of the other van rifle after rifle after rifle get handed out (uncased as they were keeping them for the new rifles & we hadn't bought ours yet) & loaded up into my van. Joking that we were probably putting on quite a show & that the police were likely to show up with the SWAT team at any moment, I looked over & a couple cars down was a mother who's eyes were getting bigger & bigger & she kept clutching her daughter closer & closer. Amazingly enough she didn't call the police (or they didn't bother to show up - not likely). I guess we looked like the area's normal rednecks rather than a herd of terrorists.

Nope, it's a federal thing. You can't travel out of state (with some exceptions, and I can't remember what they are) and buy a gun.

Yeah, it's a 50 caliber. They used to use it to hunt buffalo with... up close! It's only legal in two states. And this isn't one of them.

I just bought an SP-10 9mm off of Craigslist. Nice gun. No checks for me. Maybe they care where you live, but up here in Alaska, Craigslist will post guns.

The law isn't structured like that. You're not allowed to be in the business of buying and selling firearms, so anything you sell has to come from your private collection and go to a private individual from your state. (Selling cross-state requires an FFL.) Whether or not your rapid sales of firearms to others constitutes a business rather than rapid turnover of a private collection would be something that prosecutors have to prove, and a jury will have to ultimately decide.
