This is all Obama's fault.

Except that Jobless Benefits are no longer available once you have been Jobless for too long and then, well, Joblessness somehow goes down on paper because the Government just erases you off their list of problems.

Yayyyy!!!

The only reason the job claims are so low is because the lieberals won't report on people who no longer qualify to receive unemployment! He's been in for four years and even with all the extensions people are just dropping off the rolls and out of site.

2012-02-09 09:39:26 AM
Oh wait, this is good news? This is just the policies of Bush starting to kick in!

2012-02-09 09:40:11 AM
That's a good thing, I hope. Considering my company is closing my office and moving all the work to a different state, I'm hoping it'll be easier to find a job now. Their thought is "one central location" is better.

Well except that isn't what this story is about, dumbass. This article is about a reduction in new jobless claims. Only the derpiest of derpsters could see this as bad news.

Maybe you're a little slow so I'll break it down for you.

If 50 million people have been unemployed for four years but only 500 people just got unemployed which is down from 1 million over the last reporting period this isn't good news.

It's grim math.

That's horrible grammar, Subby. So horrible that even I, a deafie with a poor command of the English language, can spot it.

The seasonally adjusted U6 unemployment rate remains unchanged at 15.1%, so I'm not celebrating yet.

Oh no. Fox News is not going to like this.

I get all kinds of calls from recruiters these days. If you want an engineering job, check the Detroit area. Srsly.

It's clearly the result of the Bush Recovery combined with the job creators hiring in anticipation of Santorum's imminent election.

tereklusec: It's grimderp math.

I'd love to believe this - except the formulas being used ignore the following groups, each of which is larger now than they have been in decades:

1) those who have run out of benefits and are no longer reporting to the state;
2) Those who have given up looking for work, for various reasons;
3) those who have just come into the work force ( from out of school, etc.) and are looking, but don't qualify for unemployment so the office is unaware of them;
4) those looking for work, but not fitting the description of 'worker' ( i.e. under-aged, unqualified, immigrant, day-laborer, self-employed, etc.);
5) workers in 'commission-only' industries ( Realtors, insurance, independent contractors, etc.), as they generally do not qualify for unemployment.

Remains unchanged from what? The number they released last Friday?

Well, once you've fired everyone but Phil, who forwards everything
offshore, who else *can* you get rid of?

2012-02-09 09:48:59 AM
This is the exact kind of statistic I would expect when you've laid off as many people as you possibly can and still run a business. Maybe unemployment claims have fallen because there are no people left to lay off? Maybe the unemployment rate is rising because people who have been unemployed past the expiration of benefits have just fallen off the radar? I'm sure that statistic is very comforting to those who haven't been able to find work in 4 years, or who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time due to raising chilren or something.

Actually, Obama trying to extend unemployment benefits, hurts his own numbers...

So companies are laying off less and less? Good.

Everyone fudges this kind of math. I remember in Bush's term they just redefined what the word "poverty" meant.

2012-02-09 09:52:33 AM
Waiting for some right-wing blogger to explain that Obama is cooking the numbers by using a base-10 instead of base-16 numbering scheme, and that in reality 500 million more Americans watched The Price is Right last week, which is the metric we SHOULD be using, if we want to be honest about it.

It's just one indicator. As has been noted above, there are other factors, but this is a positive indicator.

So it's bad that fewer people are losing their jobs?

The only people left to fire are the ones doing the firing.

FTFA: Despite the continued improvement, the labor market recovery still has a long away to go. The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid rose 64,000 to 3.52 million in the week ended January 28.

Wait, what?

To some, this is bad news. To those same people, if the same statistic had moved in the opposite direction, it would be bad news.

Is there any way that there is good news?

If there is a "jerb creator" republican in power. Then it wouldn't matter.

Good news is bad news for the American conservative.

There is no one that shiats on America more than a Republican.

You know, if what you are saying were true, then we'd still be losing jobs month-over-month. There has been net positive job creation for almost 2 years. It makes absolutely no sense to say that there is noone left to layoff when payrolls have been increasing for 2 years.

2012-02-09 09:59:02 AM
There can be no good news until the election - none!

An excellent start. Lets keep it up.

I've been laid off twice since 2008. I'd get a kick out of it, but statistically speaking I don't exist.
