Although it may seem like it's fun
To "radar" with magazine gun,
The fella who stops
Some off-duty cops
Has issues in more ways than one.

The men, ages 25 and 24, were let go with no charges filed.

For impersonating a cop? Wow, kinda scary.

Come on... at 17, I expect this sort of moderately amusing idiotic crap.

If you haven't figured out better things to do by 25, just give up. There's no hope for you.

Yeah... what where they going to do after they pulled people over? Did the police search them or their car, or sobriety test them? Because normal, innocent citizens have to put up with it.

Came to say this. Impersonating a law official is one of those "felonies" we hear so much about.

At first I thought 'Bored men' were men from a city called Bored. No, they were really bored.

2012-02-09 01:16:52 PM
Since they let them go, I guess I'll go do this now myself.

They weren't impersonating a cop. They were impersonating that guy that sits behind home plate.

Wont catch me running radar real or pretend and not getting paid.

Police say one of the men said they got bored, so they decided to try and stop some cars.

I'm bored, let's felony!

That must have been fun for the cop, watching those two go over their whole story and how much he owes them.

Is anyone surprised that the guy that was so obviously speeding that they were able to decide they needed to pull him over... with a rolled up magazine radar gun.... was an off duty cop?

The cop was probably driving like an asshole.

2012-02-09 01:26:27 PM
Anyone else think they were probably hoping to pull over a hot blonde to "frisk" her?

Stopping would not be a good idea.

That's why I always carry a fake plastic badge in my wallet, so I can flash it quickly and say "I'm undercover CIA and you're blowing it!" and speed off into the night on my steel horse, license plate quickly removed...

However if they were smoking a joint, there would have been 15 responding officers and all kinds of charges.

Maybe the "off-duty cop" they pulled over was just a person pretending to be a cop too. He hassled them a bit then let them go with a warning because he didn't have any actual authority.

A friend of mine had a brother who was a motorcycle cop.
We would take his radar gun and follow people with radar detectors.
It was funny to watch them get all irritated that the thing kept going off.

Ahh, it's the simple things, really.

It didn't actually say they were impersonating a police officer.

They used an 'imitation' radar gun and mouthed words to get people to pull over.
They didn't actually represent themselves as police.

In the end, they pulled up next to cars, brandished nothing apparently, and said for the person to pull over. That's not a crime.

If it can be proven that they intended to detain/citizen's arrest people without cause, then perhaps charges of attempted kidnapping/false imprisonment and/or the catch-all conspiracy charge would be warranted.

In theory (and possibly only in theory), an average citizen would be justified in executing a traffic stop on someone for speeding under legal concepts like citizen's arrest or the like. BUT, they would need some sort of justification-a citizen executing citizen's arrests without any sort of proof or justification would probably find themselves quickly arrested by the police for false imprisonment.

Were they beating black people, eating donuts, planting drugs and covering up crimes? No? Then they weren't impersonating cops.

And the article didn't even say whether the off duty cop wasspeeding or not. Hell, he might have deserved a ticket!

I knew a man who sold radar guns to police departments. He had one in his car and would flip it on to watch people around him slow down.

This is northeast Georgia, dude. An hour or two up the road is where they filmed Deliverance. Not much to do but go mudding or molest passersby. Like in Deliverance.

2012-02-09 02:23:07 PM
Oh, I see we already had the Deliverance reference covered.

2012-02-09 02:23:24 PM
Um, yeah. If someone is in an unmarked car blinking their headlights and telling you to pull over, call 911.

The boys weren't charged, the cop was only "speeding", instead of his usual off-duty speeding. Transaction complete.

Even more scary when for their next trick, they buy uniforms and start pulling women over at night.
And yet if they'd had a joint in one of their pockets, well, you know.....

I once thought I was a cop for an entire year . . . turns out I was just really bored.

They didn't have an actual radar gun, so how would anybody prove that the off duty cop
was speeding? There's some other reason, they weren't charged.

Those magazine radar guns are notorious for reporting higher than actual speed. The TV Guide breathalizers have an even worse success rate.

If I just yell at another driver to "Pull over!", am I impersonating a cop?

Depends on whether one or more of the people involved is wearing a sweater at the time.

They were probably going to pull people over and rob them.
