Why the hell would Romney be smiling about those two guys sticking around to attack him? Is he a masochist?

2012-02-09 08:52:59 AM
I really don't see why we consider donations relevant in a world of SuperPACs controlled by billionaires.

2012-02-09 09:17:35 AM
Now do you see why folks wanted unlimited money in these races? Those selling ad space love it. Those who head up "focus groups" love it. Anyone who is selling time or even a modicum of effort that can be justified to the SEC loves it.

It's not about "free speech" it's about a gravy train that essentially launders bribes, deeply, and spreads it around a hair wider...

I doubt Romney is laughing about that, Subby...

Philip Francis Queeg: Why the hell would Romney be smiling about those two guys sticking around to attack him?

Because they are splitting the conservative vote. As long as both stay in the race, they cancel each other out.

Now, if Gingrich were to drop out and throw his support behind Santorum, we'd have a real race on our hands like the Dems had last time with Obama & Hillary.

Man On A Mission: Now, if Gingrich were to drop out and throw his support behind Santorum, we'd have a real race on our hands like the Dems had last time with Obama & Hillary.

Except that Obama and Hillary didn't have totally separate supporters. Sure, they preferred one over the other, but they all fell in line and coalesced around the winner. Hillary supporters still voted for Obama.

The Newt/Santorum crowd hates Romney because he's a moderate. The Romney faithful thinks the Newt/Santorum crowd are inbred rednecks. Both are correct. One side cannot count on the other for support.

Good point. The real issue we're seeing right now is that the GOP is teetering on the brink of a major split. The moderate wing, which is represented by Romney (who is actually far more conservative than GOP moderates were even 10 years ago) is at near complete ends with the religious right wing as represented by Santorum, the isolationist/libertarian wing as represented by Paul, and the return to the 1950's wing as represented by Gingrich.

And we all know that except for a few species of dragonflies, if something has four wings, it's simply not going to fly.

What the GOP desperately needs is a Great Uniter like Reagan did in 1980 and Bush did (to a lesser extent) in 2000. The sad fact is that they have no Reagans in the wings and the current crop of candidates isn't even strong enough to be Bushian.

This GOP primary season is better than "Survivor", and only slightly less insipid.

Wow, actual people gave Santorum actual money. Still, Romney, Gingrich and Santorum are largely being funded by a very tiny number of billionaires. You have to wonder what the race would look like without Citizens United.

Their base is too divided. Any candidate conservative enough to get the base excited has no chance in a general election. This thread from freeperville is a good example. People in the comments are calling Mitch Daniels and Jeb Bush moderates. These are people that want Sarah Palin to be the nominee and think she would actually win. The base has simply gone off the deep end.

It just occurred to me.

Newt is the Santorum Spoiler.

He's in the race to stop Ol' Frothy from getting too many delegates, because the Establishment has ordained Mitt Romney as the sacrificial lamb this year. He is Bob Dole, only younger and not as intelligent.

Hmm, that's a bit unclear. I mean Mitt is Bob Dole, not Newt. Newt is Newt, and he hasn't gotten better.

The echo chamber hasn't helped them and when they eventually, one day, realize it's all a lie I imagine it will be a sight to behold.

It doesn't mean they come to their senses, mind. But they will eventually realize they've been lied to. I expect at that point they will either assume the viewpoints they've been fed are indeed their own, or they will just incoherently rage.

GOP: Then a RINO repressor protein that would block the operating cells.

it really doesn't help romney, as he does not know how to campaign on a shoestring budget like Santorum does.

Romney's strategy relies on expensive TV ad buys, which don't really work well for caucus states. that creates quite a cash burn rate with minimal results so far.

if Freerepublic is anyting to go by, Santorum and Gingrich supporters also have a fair bit of animosity towards each other as well.

i still don't understand how the Teabaggers have come to support Gingrich...I mean, Gingrich did support TARP, and that is usually unforgivable for them (just ask Bill Bennett)

Plus, Obama's getting exactly what he wanted all along. Who overwhelming contributes to the super pacs? The rich! The rich are paying more into the system which then directly acts as additional stimulus. And their fractious primary is only politically weakening the GOP field. And now Obama is sitting on his huge war chest trickling out positive "we're working hard and getting the economy back on track" ads. He even reluctantly endorsed a pac just the other day.

The current climate is aligning to be an electoral slaughter.

I'm less certain then you. If there is a clear winner by the time of the RNC, I feel most of the GOP will *begrudgingly* get in line behind the leader.

Then again, maybe not. The one thing that struck me in 2008 was the differences between the DNC and the RNC.
