(USA Today)   Toppling TVs have crushed four Chicago children since October, so clearly it's time to start putting warning labels on these Doom Tubes and maybe start requiring protective gear to watch them   (usatoday.com) divider line 13

Bah!

When I was a kid, TVs weighed 800 pounds and you needed four grown men to lift one. If that fell on you it didn't just fracture your skull.

fark you.

I have a relative (child) who died like this. A lot more farks were given over his young life than you deserve in the rest of yours.

fark you.

Apparently sitting too close to the TV is unhealthy. Who knew?

Obviously, we need a mandatory 5-day waiting period on all TV purchases, so the seller can verify that your required TV license is valid, as well as other background checks.

Don't forget the warning label, which by law can't be removed and must be placed directly in the center of the screen.

Something similar happened to my family in the seventies: Mom said "let the chips fall where they may," so I pushed the Zenith on my sister.

Turning this thread into Caturday...

A friend and I visited a local acquaintance of ours, an elderly lady who lived with her son. This woman is obsessed with cats, and has at least eight or nine.

Anyway, she also had a flat screen TV. It was attached to the cabinet it was sitting on with huge packing straps.

I asked why this was.

She said:

"One of my cats used to love taking her naps on the back of the old TV, as it was nice and warm. She loved to run at the TV, take a flying leap, and land on the tube behind it. Since we got a flat screen, the cat still takes a flying leap- only to find the new TV has no back, and she invariably knocks the new TV over while falling to the floor behind it."

///I would LOVE to see that on a YouTube video...

Yea but don't you have a hard time explaining the holes in the kid's hands to people?

Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: I remember Jeff Foxworthy saying something about "We just had our house baby proofed. Baby proofing?! When I was a kid, we had a 900 pound TV on a rickety stand! My Dad said "Let him pull it on his head a few times! He'll learn!"

Me too, like, in a post halfway up this thread.

Sin_City_Superhero: dukeblue219: "Steve Shapiro, sales manager at Abt Electronics in Glenview, Ill., says old TVs often are more dangerous: A 32-inch tube TV weighs about 325 pounds, he says"

That seems awfully heavy to me... right?

I had a 32" Sony a few years ago. 325 lbs. sounds about right. SOB was heavy.

Depends on what type of TV it was. My parents have a WICKED heavy 40"+ TV in their house right now that my dad and i had to bring in. I'm by no means weak but it took us almost a half an hour to bring it up 6 steps halfway through the house and then the 2 and a half feet into the cabinet it was going into. The thing barely fit through a 36" doorway.
