All the while, Americans are trying harder to look like whales and walruses. It's an arms race.

Burgess also noted that humans, by harvesting the creatures for food, continue to pose a greater threat to sharks than they do to us.

"We're killing 30 to 70 million sharks a year in fisheries around the world," Burgess said. "It's pretty obvious who's the real winner and who's the loser in these interactions."

While I appreciate the comment, did this belong in this article? Fisheries aren't the open ocean, are they?

My chances of being attacked by a shark are, as the article points, out nearly infinitesimal seeing as I live at an elevation of about 888 feet, give or take. Excuse me while I answer the door--it seems somebody has sent me a candy gram ....

BA-DUMP.

So my irrational fear of jaws is completely irrational since only 29 people get nibbled on by sharks? Tell that to the 29 people that got nibbled on.

My theory is that sharks have saved far more people from drowning than they have ever killed, and are thus net benefactors of humanity. For this we repay them by killing them mercilessly and cruelly and eating their fins.

They deserve our respect and thanks, for they are the garde-fou* of the sea. And we should make a real effort not to look like seals when we go swimming, as it wastes their time. Even today, most humans are too skinny to be of interest to a great white. They prefer nice plump sea mammals or, at the limit, your mother.

*That's French, Tish! LIterally it means "guard fool". It designates a railing, hand rail, or parapet designed to keep idiots from killing themselves. It's one of my favourite French phrases, as it is so eloquently literal.

Sharks don't want prey with good taste, they want prey that tastes good.

70 million? Why and how are we doing that? I can't get my head around 70 million sharks killed in a year. This isn't a PETA thing, I'm talking sheer logistics.

FTFA: Surfers were the most common victims, accounting for about 60% of unprovoked attacks.

Unprovoked shark attacks? What other kind is there? How does that happen?

Way to float a theory journalism guy. From your own farking graph posted in the article, shark attacks, fatal or non-fatal, are pretty much statistically the same as they were a decade ago. I'd say that attacks are, I don't know, perhaps random and will remain at or near a median number???

have you ever seen the huge lines/nets used in trawling the ocean for fish? Also, Australia (I think) and Africa (definitely South Africa) use nets outside their beaches to stop sharks from entering the surf. They sharks get stuck and die. And then there is Japan who just slices off the fins and THROWS THE SHARK BACK IN.

It's irrational because 2,900 people got killed or maimed in car wrecks on the way to the beach.

OK. That's a good point. I guess I never considered that humans would even come into contact with 70 million sharks. If i was on a game show and had to guess how many sharks there were in the world I would have guessed less than 2 million total on the planet. Guess I'm way off.

Even more of a reason to keep my irrational fear of sharks since that would make me not want to travel to the beach and thus get into an accident.

You're 10,000 times more likely to die by slipping on your driveway and breaking your neck than being attacked by a shark.

If it makes you feel any better, the numbers aren't right. Australia had 5 deaths, but TFA says 3. No idea if the figures for other countries are any more accurate..
