FTA: "We have ranked them in scientific order, based on the following criteria: Physical Difficulty; Amount That You Would Be Humiliated If You Tried to Just Waltz In and Do Them Like Some Big Shot Because You Thought They Would Be Easy; and Overall Hardcoreness."

Nifty list but I'd have to say MMA would be #1. First of all the top two spots are solo activities. MMA is against an opponent. Second, when comparing the basics: most people can do a squat, or a somersault; most people cannot grapple.

And if you think I'm wrong about that...try it.

Now I'm curious to learn what a "super squat" is.

23) Soccer

So a sport that involves running and kicking a ball is ranked above a sport involving moving quickly on a low friction surface with steel blades attached to your boots and dodging frozen rubber disks being fired at over 100mph while armoured thugs try to slam you into wooden walls?

Suuuuuuuuure.

I didn't realize how hardcore I am as I do this to get to the vending machine at work to stuff another Nutter Butter in my fat face. It is a bit humiliating, though.

I'm no soccer apologist, but you have to leave speed out of it because skating from one end of the rink to the other is much easier than running the length of a soccer field. And most hockey players don't dodge the puck more than a couple of times a game because they're usually throwing their body in front of it. And finally, hockey players are armored, so bouncing off each other is relatively pain-free unless they just get crushed.

That being said...You know hockey players are getting worked when they can only stay on the ice for about a minute before getting really tired and any player that doesn't play at least 10 minutes in a game will draw the ire of his team if he isn't immediately on a stationary bike or something after the game to get his work in.

The lack of motocross or endurocross voids this list completely.

Seriously hardest thing you can physically do.

After this item, I was disappointed when Lethal sword combat, or lethal any other weapon combat, did not appear on the list.

And yet basketball is ranked 16 and football 10 despite both sports being much less difficult to play and learn. And rugby isn't even ranked. This list is total bullshiat.

This criteria "Amount That You Would Be Humiliated If You Tried to Just Waltz In and Do Them Like Some Big Shot Because You Thought They Would Be Easy" means baseball is underrated. Not softball, but real baseball. Trying to hit a pitch with any movement will make 97% of the people out there look a fat kid covered in honey in a beehive. Or have a decent high school pitcher throw you a curve; I've seen more than one physical guy leave the box on a called strike.

Also, pole vaulting should be ahead of hurdling, bending the pole is insanely hard. A typical person may look awkward getting over a hurdle, but they could do it. No one is doing a vault right on their first try.

Most of those activites aren't sports. Rugby most definitely is, even if many Americans think it's just a pre-drinking activity.

There are a lot of bullshiat sports on that list. Anything for which you need judges is not a sport. I am not saying you don't need tremendous skill and athleticism to be a gymnast, but if it there is not an objective winner, then it is not a sport.

Agreed. The writer lumps tennis in with all other racket sports at 27. Squash, racquetball, and tennis are all very different outside of the similarity of hitting a ball with a racket. Squash burns something like 800+ calories per hour, which means it's pretty damn tiring if you're doing it right. Not to mention how ridiculous some people look when trying to hit a ball with a racket.

Obviously this guy never surfed. If you can even get on the board and try something fancy and fail, you either (a) get smashed in the face and lose teeth or (b) get smashed in the head by the board/rocks/reef/other surfers and drown.

Somehow ballet doesn't seem as humiliating to fail at, nor as hardcore.

Ever pick one up?

I've played basketball, football, lifted weights, ran, boxed, swam, cross-country ski, trained in the Navy, and riding enduro is the most physically and mentally challenging thing I've EVER done.

It is that hard.

I have to say that mountain bike racing is a helluva lot harder than playing basketball.
Throw in altitude, crazy ass weather, dust, mud whatever.....it can be extremely brutal on your entire body. But basically it comes down to how hard you push yourself with any sport.

Someone else mentioned Rugby...I'm puzzled why it isn't on there.

A big hearty THIS!! fark hockey, and lacrosse any sport where you have prolonged, scheduled sitting on the bench can't be too strenuous. Run for 80 minutes with full contact, no helmet, no pads and tell me how easy Rugby is.

Robert1966: acronym: swimming?

I don't think so. Water aerobics is completely different from swimming laps. Generally, the only people I see doing water aerobics are older women who are 60+ years old. That being said, I am really surprised that swimming wasn't up there, as it is a sport that looks easy because almost everyone swims while they are younger, but the motions and form needed for swimming laps/competitively are completely different than just swimming around. I can't count how many people I've seen swimming in a lane next to mine that take 50 strokes to swim a length. They always look like they're flailing about, not making much progress. Hell, it takes my brother the better part of an hour to swim 500 yards and he's in pretty good shape.

TrainingWheelsNeeded : BWAAHAAHAAA!! I laugh because I know your pain. I was grossly overweight and worked out on a bike and with free weights for one year before starting p90x. I was in decent shape in order to start it and it killed me.

The pushups were killers. The plyometrics.....Holy cow. I was sore in places I did not know I could be sore in or even that muscles existed in those areas.

But it works. Keep up with it. You will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

This list sucks by the way. "Kung Fu or some other show-offy martial art." WTF? That is offensive. Karate is much different from Kung-Fu which is much different from Tae Kwon Do. All have different levels of intensity. This list sucks.

4) Morons.

SniperJoe: I agree. I swam professionally for many years when I was young. I raced just about every weekend for about ten years.

Swimming is the very good for you....when done right. Many people cannot keep their bodies straight when swimming laps at a fast level. They flail around like a fish out of water. If that is not the problem then swimming in a straight line is even more of a challenge.

Swimming for fun is nothing like swimming in races. In order to go fast in water (or swim correctly), one needs to train for a while.

Rugby may be hard on the body, but I feel a lot of people could join a rugby match and not look like a complete moron. Every rugby player I know didn't start until college and managed to fit in just fine after a couple practices.

The list isn't "most physically demanding" but more "hardest for an individual to pick up".

Just because it looks foofy, doesn't mean the physical actions of the participants aren't the result of extremely difficult, intense, and long-term training. Try standing on your toes... not on the pads but upon your toes... for ten seconds.

Then imagine adding in all the leaps, throws, spins, contortions, and eating disorders and have it all enforced upon you by a cruel Russian.

But gymnastics is even more hardcore. Complete humiliation is guaranteed for someone to just try it, but the actual misery those women put themselves through with partially-healed bones and tendons, not to mention daily shredding of their skin from their hands is really something. "Chalked Up" by US champion Jennifer Sey was eye-opening, and a likely reason that my daughters will never go into competitive gymnastics.

Yet activities like powerlifting, crossfit, hell even marathon running aren't hard to pick up and they (among other similar activities) are in the top 15. Yeah, after a few practices you can play rugby on a college B-side but you're not ready to play even beer-league Division III rugby until you've been around the sport for quite some time.

Take the weight that you can only do for ~10 reps, and put it on the bar. Squat it for 20 reps, taking as many deep breaths between reps as you need. That's basically super squats.

They never even let me try it with the crossbar up. Probably a good call.

I could do a decent 300m hurdle race because I wouldn't be complete dead and could make it over the last hurdle. But really, I don't know which race was worse; the 300m hurdles or the 800m run.
