This is what I don't get.

Most right wing idiots think the media has a liberal bias anyway. Go to any Teaparty site or something similar and I bet you that the term "Jewmedia" comes up at least a few times a day.

Why not just...start calling the GOP on their bullshiat anyway? They already hate you, they can't hate you even more. So go all out, start calling these GOP racist farks "GOP racist farks" and end it already.

Now, I have a confession to make today.

I support the food stamp program.

"I think SNAP - the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - to call it by its actual name and not something that Newt Gingrich thinks is politically punchy - serves an important purpose.

The purpose - largely - is to prevent children and old people from going hungry. About half of recipients are children. About ten percent are elderly.

SNAP doesn't provide them with some fancy perk from an out of control, free-spending government. It provides poor kids and the elderly with food.

You cannot redeem food stamps at Tiffany's, which may be another reason I guess Newt Gingrich thinks they are bad.

But I think keeping Americans from being hungry is good."

Have you considered nepotism? Sure if feels bad to get a job not on your own merits but because the boss is a friend of the family, but while you can't buy happiness, a steady paycheck does provide a reasonable degree of non-suckiness.

Unfortunately, that's more than offset by the 30-40 thousand that were significantly injured in the war and occupations and will end up on public assistance for the rest of their lives. If GWB had been more foresighted, he would have demanded that the majority of those people bleed out on the battlefield and not be a burden on the rest of us.

To be fair, Obama added to the program by the big government nanny state liberal method of a market downturn resulting in more people meeting the established eligibility requirements using the excuse of the worst recession since the Great Depression to force people onto the dole.

Bush added to the program primarily by relaxing eligibility requirements in the wake of a recession: a market-based compassionate conservative approach. The fact that you would compare the two is outrageous.

The domestic economy tanked due to Bush's ineptitude and he was more interested in running around calling himself a "war president".

The way he completely, failed to give a shiat about Katrina's aftermath was also an indication of how he felt about Americans at large. Non super rich Americans, that is.

As a Christian, I would love to hear a Democrat make that comment to a Christian-vote-fishing Republican during a debate. I know a few Christians who believe Republicans who claim to be Christian, yet whose actions don't reflect that - they reflect the neoconservative agenda of today's Republicans and only use their "faith" for vote-getting.

Two reasons:

#1: The "mainstream media" is all for profit, which means its run by rich old white guys who support the GOP. Sure they might not agree with Joe Bob Teabagger and his racist views, but they know he's a useful idiot for promoting the fiscal agenda that favors them.

#2: Again.. they are for profit. Allowing "controversy" (or manufacturing it by reporting "both sides" of an argument about what color the sky is...) allows them to draw eyes, which draws advertising dollars/revenue.

I hate to sound like a god damn hippie, but the root cause of most of our problems really is money. Maybe it's not the lack of money, but the fact that some people have way too much of it, or some people are way to beholden to it...

It used to be a man had principles and couldn't be bought. These days it seems that a mans principles are just all about doing whatever it takes to make more cash.

Not really either, just mocking the fact that the previous president actually did take steps to make SNAP more accessable (primarily targeted as a benefit for the farm lobby); an example of how "compassionate conservatism" is simply the right wing version of everything Republicans accuse liberals of doing.

As far as the Republican talking point, that has ben established for well over a year: post a chart showing how the number of food stamp recepients has risen dramatically since 2008 (often with an axis where the range displayed is nearly identical to the maximum and minimum values so as to portray it as if there are several orders of magnitude of difference between Obama and Bush). If you ask what Obama did/is doing that has lead to this increase, they will usually explain it as a sinister plot to keep the economy weak by deficit spending and refusing to deregulate industries, putting more people out of work and on welfare where they can be reliable Democrats. Yes, it might not be accurate, but it is internally consistent with their worldview and as such is wildly popular.

I try to appeal to the insane types by explaining that the meager food rations we give these people who need it prevent them from kicking in your door and taking it from you.

It's not 100% effective, and of course there is some abuse... However, it's domestic crime insurance and I think that should convince anyone against it to shut the hell up and pay for it.

Ignoring the whole part about how it helps many single mothers raise and feed their children, especially the ones that maybe made a bad decision with a bad guy and are trying to go it alone to keep the kid away from that bad guy... or girl, as many people seem top ignore single fathers trying to go it alone in the absence of a crazy calamari hosebeast as well.

Family planning, food stamps, and unemployment. These are investments that pay serious dividends and any investor with a brain should embrace them fully.

Just ask Craig T. Nelson.

AverageAmericanGuy: Clinton's economic policies caused the recession of the 2000's.

i know you're either (A) trolling or (B) a wingnut who's just spewing baseless talking points, but in a way, you're right (not about the shallow recession of the early 2000s brought on by the dot com collapse and 9/11 of course; that was inevitable).

the collapse of 2008 can trace its way to the laissez-faire policies of clinton's economic team: alan greenspan, robert rubin, tim geithner, and larry summers. as a "third way" democrat, clinton adopted many economic policies of his republican opponents (something they absolutely hated him for), including this hands-off approach to regulation. add in the repeal of glass-steagall, the continuation of deregulationist policies under bush, and a housing boom fueled by greenspan's ridiculously low interest rates post-9/11, and you have all the makings of a perfect storm.

bottom line: laissez-faire, trickle-down capitalism died in september of 2008.
