If you're driving 225, why would you ever stop for the police.

In less than 20 seconds, you're a mile away from the point the police officer saw you. By the time he got in and started the engine and accelerated to 120mph, you're 2 miles away from him.

Police cars can't travel 225mph, even if they wanted to.

Police cars have radios, and radio waves go 186000 miles in one second. And there are more police cars out there.

That's true, but it's awfully hard to do the initial coordination of resources when your target is 2 miles away and can beat your car's top speed by double..

Plus evading is a felony. Speeding, even this fast, isn't. Felonies change your entire life. If you can afford a Veyron, you can afford to take care of the trouble you can get into in it.

That is almost funny. Can't think of a situation where you are more screwed than this one. Can't outrun the radio. No streets to turn down to get away. Can't pull off some dusty desert road because your car will high center on anything higher than a copenhagen can. Miles from anywhere. You might as well just pull over because you have zero chance of blending in or outrunning his backup. Game over.

There are less than 100 Veyrons in the US, and probably only two in the state of AZ. Not to mention, even if you drive at full throttle, in 12 minutes you're out of gas, and as the man says, "YOU'RE STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GODDAM DESERT!" (and Motorola still travels at 186,200 miles per second...)

If it weren't for Texas' manly oil baron being scared by a bird (new window) and driving his own Bugatti right into the middle of Galveston Bay, I'd say "people with millions to throw around aren't usually that stupid". As usual, I'd be wrong.

The guy that drove the Bugatti into the lagoon did it for insurance fraud. He'd have gotten away with it too, except for the meddling kids who just happened to be driving next to him filming him because he was driving a Bugatti.

The traffic stop could have happened an hour later and he was doing 81 in a 70 or some such.

there was no traffic on the speed run stretch. Where the car was pulled over had a decent amount of traffic.

/granted, doing the speed run on public roads was pretty dumb, unless they had the mexican police shut it down.

I can't think of much the Veyron would be good for, but it is an extremely impressive bit of engineering. Building a street-legal vehicle that can get to 200+ mph is becoming almost commonplace. Building a street-legal vehicle that can get to 200+ mph with so little drama is a marvel.

The cops have these things called maps, which tell them where the roads go. With maps and radios, they can block the roads up ahead.

Yeah, building something that can go that fast isn't that hard. A friend of mine did it for a little under 10 grand several years ago. He never took it above 170 or so, because the car wasn't built to handle anything faster than that and he wasn't stupid. Building something that can go that fast and still be controllable, that's a whole other story.

No car can outrun a radio, and it's not like it's real easy to blend in with the rest of traffic when you're driving a Veyron. There are some cars and bikes that are both fast and common enough that you might get away with that. A Veyron is not one of them.

I get the feeling that the cop was in on the filming.............................note that at no time did they tape the speedo at that speed and they only shot footage of the cop car sitting on the side of the road. With a good attorney, if it ever came to charges, that's reasonable doubt

If he did get spotted going that fast, it was probably from above, and the car could have outrun the spotter plane (but not its radio)

toetag: The traffic stop could have happened an hour later and he was doing 81 in a 70 or some such.

The YouTube video description says:

"Bugatti Veyron on Seven 215-225mph Runs. Multiple flyby views/angles. Car kept in handling mode (not top speed mode) due to uneven surface of the road used.
Due to its 26 gallon tank and its incredible fuel efficiency at normal speeds (80mph), the car was driven down to the border and back, without the need to refuel or the use of a carrier.
On the way back from from the border, returning through AZ, an officer stopped the car to take a look at it. No citations given since the car was driven at 80mph where at that speed it gets great gas mileage (about 17mpg highway).
About 12 gallons was burned on the 7 speed runs."

HallasHell: Captain Slow got that thing up to 250+. I feel cheated

Captain Slow's run was in speed mode, these guys left it in handling mode (the rear wing is still up for downforce).

What kind of ticket does that earn you?

I imagine in some states, they fine you, impound the car, strip you of your license for a year and make you take plenty of courses to regain it.

Then there are probably other states where they give you a warning.

You know, I bet that if you owned a Bugatti Veyron in Arizona, you could probably just drive to the police station and say, 'Hey guys, i want to do a speed run in the desert. Do you think you guys could block off the road for me for a bit? I'll let you guys take turns riding shotgun.'

And then you'd have half the squad out there cheering you on.

I'm going to call shenanigans on the video, at least to the extent of the speed they achieved. I don't doubt he was speeding, But he wasn't going that fast. The reason I say this is because the rear spoiler is fully extended, meaning the car is not in Top Speed mode. In order to reach the speeds the guy is claiming you need to insert a special key into the Veyron which retracts the spoiler, closes the front vents and lowers the car's suspension.

You can see what I'm walking about here.

One other thing, they would probably need to check the entire stretch of road for debris. One blown tire at that speed and you're hamburger
