I went to a elephant "preserve" in Bali that was like that. They actively encouraged you to feed the elephants, and said you could pat their trunks. Didn't see anyone get whacked but saw the elephans "grunt" and flail his trunk so I decided to skip the patting/feeding (care taker jumped on the elephant, rode intot he woods and then we heard elephant "screams").

Point is the idiots runningt he place might have had something to do with it.
