Luscious Jackson is working on a new CD - I'm pretty jazzed about that!

/would enjoy some more Kostars and Dusty Trails, too!
//Jill and Gabby both put out pretty decent CD's a few years ago, too.

I've always thought it odd, and a bit sad, how a lot of the early/mid 90s women in music felt more powerful, but were completely overtaken by pop starlets and other stereotypical female roles at the end of the decade. Riot Grrl was dethroned by Girl Power.

i remember laughing when they said Allanus Morisette was some kind of angry woman messiah, as i rocked to PJ Harvey's Rid of Me.

Did girl bands GO anywhere? Why does it matter, in 2012, if the band is all chicks? Oh, the drummer is a girl *too*? Whooptie shiat.

The day people stop making a big deal about women doing things will be the day they achieve equality.

Well, as a white male, I can say that I am angry at myself for being so racist due to listening to bands of angry white women.

One of the artists at the forefront of this movement is JD Samson, known best for her work in Le Tigre and, more recently, dance-punk group MEN.

You're not really "back" if you've been making music for over a decade.

What about girl fronted bands?

2012-02-09 05:08:21 PM
I'm a male and I vastly prefer female fronted bands to male fronted ones. I think the female singing voice is much more enjoyable than the male in most places, especially since all the new male fronted rock bands have a singer that sounds like Nickelback.

master of unlocking: I'm looking forward to seeing Wild Flag this April.

Seeing them for the 2nd and 3rd time at the end of March. I'm trying to make up for the fact that I never saw Sleater-Kinney. Speaking of S-K, I'm starting to hear rumblings that their hiatus may be ending in the near future.

Wild Flag are one of the best live bands around right now. If they're coming through your town, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you miss it.

Most of the good stuff I've been listening to lately are due co-ed bands. The Kills, Cults, Phantogram, Matt and Kim. Shiat, I wish Beat Happening would come back.
/am old enough to remember to listening to bh and bikini kill on the bus, so therefore too old to be a hipster

And Vivian Girls sounds good on one listen, but after a while it gets really grating, and then you see them open for another band like I did and you realize that this is a summary of every song.

"Myyyyy booooyfriiieeeend. My boy-oyyyyyyy-friend. Myyyyyyy boyfriiiiiieeeeeeennnnnnnnnnd."

Stop singing for just 2 seconds and play. Gah!

Not to rub it in, but I got to see Sleater-Kinney 7 times. They're phenomenal. One of the best concerts I ever went to was New Years Eve Madison Square Garden with S-K, Flaming Lips and Wilco. The Lips brought out Corin to sing War Pigs. It was rad.

There's plenty of great female bands, or females in bands out there. They typically aren't shoved down the throat. Two great places to find some well written, deeper lyrics are in the trip-hop type of music. Layla Ali (of Sneaker Pimps) still writes and releases, Supreme Beings of Leisure have put out some of the most sublime albums to listen too. Little Dragon has been very enjoyable.

And then there's rockabilly/psychobilly filled with women who kick farking ass. The Horrorpops, the Wolfgangs, the Silverettes, Chilli and the Baracudas, Imelda May, Atomic Aces, Tihuya Cats and a recent favorite of mine Hillbilly Moon Explosion (new window).

There has never been a shortage of passionate, talented, kick ass females in music...EVER! Ask Wanda Jackson. It's about a prfile at times, and profitability. Which is why the twinkie of the music world (female pop) has been crammed down our throats as of late as opposed to good, quality music. It carries a profile and makes money.

What's the over/under on the last Wanda Jackson? On one hand, it was her most listenable record in... well... decades. But I'm kind of torn on the horns. I associate her with a specific guitar sound and here it was replaced with really brassy horns, which had an almost similar effect (though they made her sound "old", appropriate or not - like some "Sha Na Na" retro act), and I just... can't quite fall on one side or the other on it.

I did think she did mighty justice to some of the songs.
