Uh... What kind of a family did you grow up in? I only ever heard that it was weirdos who did that, not anyone of a specific ethnicity. Heck, my dad was pretty racist and even he never tried to make that connection.

That wasn't security, that was walmarts facial tracking software. Seriously. A couple of years ago they upgraded all their stores with fully computerized camera systems that can literally track the face of every single person in the store and automatically dump the footage of every second that person was in the store and if they bought anything a record from the register they were at even if that person paid with cash.

Of course people hearing the worst couple of events that happened among the 7+ billion people on earth each day/week get a completely skewed version of reality as it is hard to conceive how unlikely they are ever to happen to you or anyone you know. For example in 1999 there were on average around 115 stereotypical kidnappings (pdf) per year (where the child is abducted, taken far away from the scene, with the intent to either permanently take them, ransom them, etc.)

To try and get a handle of how likely a crime this is, lets say you know 1000 people fairly well (i.e. around 500 couples) - which is very high, probably by a factor of 10 for most people - and they have 2 children each on average who might be abducted, and there is a 15 year or so range when each child might be abducted in this manner, so roughly speaking 300 million population divided by the 2000 parents/children you know divided by 15 years means a 1 in 10,000 chance that someone you vaguely know will be affected by such a crime during the time they are bringing up their children. Even a 1 in 10,000 chance of something that is hard to conceptualize - consider say if you were rolling a dice, but instead of 6 sides it had 10,000 sides. If you were rolling it every 4 seconds or so, 24 hours a day, you would on average "win" twice per day.

Of course with 115 such events per year on average means you could be hearing about such a thing in the US a couple of times a week making it seem like someone abducting your child could happen at any moment, and was a common and likely event.
