I would run as fast as I could to get away from those sick things

can she get the cast to re-enact her book with the bondage and nekkidness? Cause that would be worth watching

It will be tolerable only if we don't have to see her horrifying arms or hear her annoying fake pseudo-british accent.

Why? Do they need a penny whistle with snakes on it? I hear she's playing omega red in the x-men reboot.

I really wanted to like Smash, but it is too slick and full of cliches. And that demo song wasn't anything special.

Pretty much this. Caught the pilot the other night and spent the whole episode saying "Of course."

"Of course the lead is a brunette ingenue from the midwest."

"Of course her rival is a blonde would be starlet."

"Of course the dance instructor is a slightly older man who preys upon naive young actresses (and british to boot)"

"Of course she gets away with singing a modern pop song at a period audition for "Marilyn" (and even gets away with more than 16 bars, they must REALLY like her!)"

"Of course the ingenue's midwestern parents don't believe in their daughter's dreams (they even scoff at high NYC menu prices!!)"

I'll be truly surprised if, by midseason, the lead doesn't have at least two of the following:

- A black/white gay best friend

- A female friend with an eating disorder

- A blossoming relationship (though she already has a boyfriend) with a fellow actor who "gets her"

- A job as a waitress

- A drinking problem of her very own

- No time for her boyfriend, he gets frustrated and (for a time) leaves her, opening the door for love interest to enter

I don't envy NBC in the slightest. They have to somehow make a show about a Broadway production that will appeal to the theater nuts while also embracing a mainstream audience for the ratings. I would love to know what "Executive Producer" Steven Spielberg's hand was in all this, besides free Broadway tickers for the family, of course.

Which is really the issue with any network television. Not every show can be "The West Wing", and, as a matter of fact, very few can be. Even West Wing struggled mightily from time to time, simply because it was too smart (and often too esoteric) for people whose idea of "technically sophisticated television" is a highly rated CSI episode.

tl;dr: It's the nature of the network television beast. Well-worn tropes are the only way you can be sure enough people will be comfortable with the story.

My favorite bit was that in order to set up the casting couch scene later, in order to establish that he's just British not gay, they had him make a comment about working with so many gays on Broadway, as if it's any different whatsoever in the West End in London.

Is the episode going to revolve around a hilarious miscommunication that has the adults thinking the students are all trying to buy drugs, when they're all just really excited for Madonna's new album?

The show is probably going to continue the cliche overdose, but I still liked the first episode of Smash.

Interesting to hear you say that.

As a theater nut (and fan of Smash) I was wondering if the show would appeal to people outside the industry.

(Does the average watcher even know what "Reidel" is?)

It is a VERY accurate portrait of the way Broadway shows are created.

All the characters are caught up in being a part of a show that has not even been written yet.

The producer is lying about having access to the money required to realize the show.

There are many more examples.

What is great to see is Musical theater having such a resurgence in popular culture. I hope the show is as successful as I imagine it could be.

Smash pilot (new window)

I lasted 9 minutes. No singing, but there was a gay New York guy, a waitress, and 'drama' with one of the mains' husband. Barf.

It's sad, really. The first half of season 1 was actually really, really good. It was actually a very black comedy that I wouldn't let a kid near. Ryan Murphy got back from Eat, Love, Pray and started mutating it into what the public perception was. By the time season 2 hit, the show had done a complete 180 and managed to become exactly what it started off parodying. Season 3 was looking up for a while since Ryan Murphy was more involved with American Horror Story, but then he came back and gave us the absolutely dreadful Michael Jackson episode. I've never had a single episode of any show fill me with as much rage as that one. It had a few truly great moments, but a whole lot of shoehorning Michael Jackson songs in awkwardly. It was bad, bad writing and it lay entirely at the feet of Ryan Murphy. Much the same as every other episode he directly writes, it became all about, "look at this thing that I like and what I think about it and you're an idiot if you don't agree," instead of letting it be organic to the story. This week's episode was an improvement, but we watched it right after the Michael Jackson show, so it had my carryover anger. The only reason that I watch it now is because my wife became a massive fan and has stuck with it. I'm wondering how much that'll last though, since I looked over at her several times during the Jackson episode to give her the, "Are you farking kidding me," look and she had her face buried in the iPad instead. Something tells me that if it can't reel her back in by the end of the season, we may finally be able to take it off the DVR. It started off as some truly great entertainment and quickly became a way for a very narcissistic little man to scream at everyone, "Look at me, look at me, I'm the best person in the world! Aren't I so clever?"

I also tried to watch American Horror Story, since I'm a huge horror fan and I thought it would be right up my alley. Nope. Pretty much a Greatest Hits of every tired horror cliche in the book. Horror for people who don't like horror. Again, Ryan Murphy proving that he's an good initial idea man, but should be cut out beyond that since his execution sucks.

Jizz Master Zero: It's sad, really. The first half of season 1 was actually really, really good

Note: I like the show, still watch it via BitTorrent. I've seen exactly one musical number in three seasons (Rachel singing Take a Bow in the second episode of season one), I skip over them all and I also FF through anything to do with Will. It's a win-win for me.

Nah, don't agree with that at all. That stretch you mention was all about the worst character on the show, Will, and his excruciatingly annoying (now) ex-wife and the break up of their marriage, with some of the glee club and Cheerios thrown in. Brittany, Santana, Kurt and Mercedes were minor characters, the student scenes were all about that most boring and stupid of dramatic devices, the love triangle, in this case Finn / Rachel / Quinn.

Season 2 started out poorly because of all the stunt casting, but the last 4 or 5 episodes were really strong. I've been enjoying season 3 because it's about the kids, not Will or stunt casting. Finn has had some great scenes tied to his being afraid that he's going to be stuck working at Burt's auto shop = never getting out of Lima. I still haven't seen the Ricky Martin episode, I watch the BitTorrent on the weekends.

/Mmmmm......Corey Monteith......mmmmmm
/DeGrassi in it's 4,392 versions is pretty realistic even if it is Canadian

Cliff Notes version: Ryan Murphy realized he was making more money with iTunes than he was with the show itself. That pretty much dictated the direction of the show.
