Nah, he would have been shot and the family would get $1.7 M. Search Trevon Cole.

BronyMedic: Inquisitive Inquisitor: Years ago I saw a traffic stop turn into a fracas when a man went into a seizure and started flailing around. The officer interpreted it as resisting arrest and did the bare minimum to subdue him. After EMS arrived and his condition was noted by the paramedics the officer immediately contacted his supervisor, removed himself from the scene and turned himself in for discipline. He even went to the hospital and apologized for what happened. There was no cover up and no one lied to save face.

That's how you own up to a mistake as a law enforcement officer.

No, that's how you get the shiat sued out of you by anyone involved for an insane amount. You cannot do this in a litigious society that we live in. It's also how you get to drop any legal and union protection you had as a police officer in the incident, since you've now gone around the chain of command and established policy and procedure of the department.

Chances are, he had someone with stars on their lapel telling him to go apologize.

Insulin Shock = Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.
Diabetic Coma = DKA or HHNK, Hyperglycemia

For the later, you really don't want to give them insulin. Although it's hard as hell to kill someone with insulin.

brantgoose: Diabetics often sound and act like they are drunk when they go into insulin shock. It is important that the general public and public officials, including the police, be aware of this and other causes of misunderstanding and uninformed reactions.

This sort of thing happens all the time--people think a diabetic who is having an episode is drunk. It's understandable but preventable.

There's also a tragic amount of ignorance an misinformation about mental illness, epilepsy, autism, disabilities, etc.

Something similar to this happened local to me last year. The man (black) was in diabetic shock in his condo and and a next door neighbors cleaning lady heard loud noises and caught a glimpse of him thought the window. She then called the police because she thought he was robbing the place, the police found him naked sitting on his upstairs toilet and thought it would be good to beat him with a night sick and pepper spray him for a bit when he was un-compliment. once they got him outside onlookers said he lived there so the police threatened to arrest them for obstruction of justice. not until the ambulance arrived and the EMT who knew the man verified his identity from previous diabetic shock incidents, did they let him go.

All records have been sealed on the case, and the Hartford, VT police and VT state police stand behind that decision. Since he was not actually arrested so they don't need to release the records. in accordance with Vermont laws.

There's no excuse to kick anyone in the head. Resisting or not.

There was a push a few years back to make every law enforcement officer in the United States a certified First Responder. Although it was because of the AED and CPR, not because of the diabetic issue.

As I recall, it never gained steam because the LEO community was worried about the legal implications of assuming care of a patient.

*lives in Vegas*

Yup, although this particular case took place in Henderson (not really Vegas) this is pretty much par for the course for LVMPD, he's lucky he didn't get shot. The cops here have about a dozen pending wrongful death suits (they shot and killed a guy on the toilet, they shot and killed an unarmed guy during a traffic stop) they last one that got settled was for 1.7 million. (Leading to speculation that if this keeps up the LVMPD and Clark County will go broke paying off these suits). The Sheriff here is real piece of work too (think Barney Fife meets Joe Apaio) he (and the Police Union) are currently fighting the move to create an independent coroner inquest panel because the one we currently have pretty much rubber stamps whatever version of events the cops give.

Thanks to the ubiquity of video recording technology now in the hands of citizens and the near-to-daily new footage of police officers grossly abusing their power and committing wanton and heinous crimes against the citizenry, the ranks of those willing to defend any officer, or any department, will be all but extinct withing a few years.

There is an occupying army in this country right now, and it is your local police department.

Their continued and growing use of military tactics and weapons is only ratcheting up the stakes, how long until the citizenry responds in kind?

No one will be rooting for the cops if and when this happens.

2012-02-08 12:29:36 PM
- The cops should be disciplined for excessive use of force while executing the arrest, even if they thought we was drunk and non compliant; still, that's a relatively minor infraction;
- The cop who kicked the guy in the head and any other I may have missed that deliberately acted to harm the guy as opposed to subduing him should be prosecuted for assault (agravated because they are cops beating a helpless person);
- The other cops who failed to intervene and report the agression should be prossecuted and/or disciplined, according to the law of the land (of which I am ignorant);

I am still amazed that under Common Law public prosecutors can decide to do nothing about a crime, just because they don't feel like it.

Awesome! These cops get to physically abuse a citizen, violate his civil rights AND get to keep their jobs? Hooray for justice! I tell ya folks...keep some popcorn handy...eventually people are going to rise up and fight back and it's going to get very very ugly. Cops need to realize that they are terribly outnumbered and when it comes to firepower...well, that's pretty obvious too. It would be wise for the good cops out there to start cleaning their own houses because once the shiat hits the fan, people won't stop to differentiate between the good and bad cops.

shiat happens.

Everyone of you has implicitly agreed to the system we live in, which is you pay to be protected. Law Enforcement agents put their lives on the line daily to protect us from a laundry list of ailments, situations and other people with less than good intentions.

The odd time a LEO will exercise poor judgement and unfortunate situations like your story will take place. Tough. We do not live in a perfect society and you all clamoured for a decade about being in fear from terrorists and needing to be protected from every little threat. The Federal Government got the memo, don't worry. But the key is you don't get to pick and choose what a free society where you are protected by the Government looks like, they do.

Cops are above the average grunt salary earner, they won't tell you that because you have the emotional intelligence of a 5-yr so they simply joke about it amongst themselves but look no farther than this incident itself where the DA is protecting the cops by hiding their names from the public.

Get it through your head, Cops are better and more valuable people than you are, and you'll be treated like such whether you like it or not. And no, you gave up your right to complain about it once you gave up your freedoms and liberties in exchange for 24/7, digitally recorded around the clock protection from the outside world. These cop bashing threads really make the lot of you look worse than you are, if that is ... possible, wow. You asked for this, and if it was as bad as you try and portray the system as, you'd get off your lazy fat ass and do something to change it.

You won't, and you'll remember to keep your yappy mouth shut as soon as it's in front of a Law Enforcement officer and away from your shield of stupid, the PC.

/Loves watching tough guys shrink down to their REAL size and piss their pants when confronted with true authority
//Most of you would not only recant your cop bashing but you'd suck up the cop and rat each other out

Us? Nothing. We check a blood glucose, and perform a detailed assessment. Chances are if finger sticks in a different digit in either extremity are within normal limits, that fruity/ethanol smell on their breath isn't from ketone metabolism assocaited with hyperglycemia in diabetes. If it's normal, we do our best to rule out other causes of altered mentation, like seizure history , stroke, or drug overdose.

There are subtle changes you can look for in ethenol intoxication, like horizontal nystagmus and photophobia, but those can also be caused by neurological problems too. In addition, while we may see it, we're not certified by the state bureau of investigation in DUI identification like the officers in the "Whiskey" cars are that carry the breathylizers here, meaning our word is bumpkus. Usually, if they're stable and they get ruled out, we do a blood draw and they get a breathylizer in the back of the ambulance, and an option to either ride with us, or ride in the back of the squad car for medical clearance.

Well most police cars use the coban system; encased Hard drive in the trunk wireless body mike and hiden camera and mike in the back seat. this system uses the wirless N band to upload the video to the central server and then gets burned to at least one DVD.
