bugontherug: In any event, he's wrong that the statement of a particular negates a generalization.

true, but i was addressing his idea that the specific wording didn't matter and you have to glean the deeper "intent" of his statement. Which, the way he said it, he still comes across as loving to fire people.

and its an incredibly stupid thing to say, one amongst many. Why would i vote for a president that keeps saying stupid things like that?

tlchwi02: CanisNoir: Wow, you're really reaching to come up with that load of crap. What Romney was saying in Context was that he enjoys being able to fire people who provide a bad service so that he can get someone who provides a good service. You know, common business sense. It's a sentiment shared by most intelligent people in this country. It's disingenuous to say that he just enjoys firing people. The context is totally different.

its also an exceptionally stupid thing for a politician that has already lost races because he reminded voters of the "guy who fired them" and his opponents brought up working class every-men who had actually been fired by him to talk about it, who repeatedly talks about his wealth and privledge in a way that alienates everyone but who is (at the same time) desperately trying to pretend that he is just a normal middle class person who can feel empathy with anyone other than ultra rich vulture capatilists to say.

so no matter the specific "context" romney is dumber than a brick for phrasing it as "i love to fire people!" instead of "i think choice for everyone is good" with the massive political baggage he has. And the way he said it, even in context, most people believe he honestly does like firing people in any situation.

bugontherug: Lou Brown: FTFA: But historical patterns do not take into account an opponent who says he enjoys firing people.

You know, this is the type of disingenuous bullshiat that drives me crazy. Here's what Romney actually said:

"I like being able to fire people who provide services to me... You know, if someone doesn't give me the good service I need, I want to say, 'You know, I'm going to get someone else to provide this service to me.'"

That's a far cry from saying he enjoys firing people. It's something I imagine people would agree with in most cases. For many reasons, health insurance isn't one of those cases, but overall the author is totally misrepresenting what Romney was trying to say.

No, really he isn't. "I like being able to fire people" isn't really all that far of a cry from saying he enjoys firing people. It's only a one word qualification away from it, in fact. The "context" you're offering doesn't diminish the meaning of the quote anyway. Yeah, he likes being able to fire insurance companies. In explaining that, he began with the phrase "I like being able to fire people." His statement of who he particularly enjoys firing does not undermine or diminish the generalization.

Public Personality:
"I like being able to eat good food. You know, if someone doesn't give me the good food I like, I want to say 'you know, I'm going to get someone else to provide this food to me."

News Media:
"So you like being able to eat good food?"

You:
"ZOMG!!! HE SAID NOTHING LIKE THAT. PUT THAT STATEMENT IN FULL CONTEXT YOU LIBERAL SCUM!!! ZOMG!!! OH NOES!!!"

Mitt Romney likes being able to fire people. He likes being in a position of authority that permits him to disrupt the lives of people he considers subordinate to him by causing them short term economic distress, and possible long term career damage. That's the full import of what he said. Given his vulture capitalist background, I believe him.

If you think some sort of Romney lover, liberal basher, or Farker who wants a Republican to win the Presidency, well... you're way off base. There is a massive difference between "liking being able to fire" people and "liking firing" people. For example, do you know anyone who likes the idea of entering a multi-year contract with their cell phone company? No, because it locks you into an agreement and prevents you from firing them if necessary. Does that mean you want to do it or look forward to doing it? Of course not, but sometimes shiat happens. And as I said before, health insurance is a totally different animal anyhow.

qorkfiend: We saw in 2010 what an apathetic left plus a motivated right gets us.

2010 wasn't about POTUS though and that's the way elections always cycle. In 2010, we actually saw less swing to the right than would have normally been expected. When Obama starts running his campaign in full swing, we'll see what a semi-motivated left plus an apathetic right get us. The left isn't motivated yet because what do we have to get motivated about? All the political news is about Rmoney and Gingrich and now Santorum. The base is kickin back and enjoyin the lulz, at least thats what I think.

Why do people keep talking about this? I've never said Mittens likes firing people. I've quoted the man verbatim, explaining with a linguistic analogy how his particular didn't negate his generalization.

I hope not, but this far out, anything is possible.

The greatest threat to Obama's re-election is the perception that it is inevitable. Progressives have a nasty habit of not turning out to vote if they think victory is assured, or if they think defeat is inevitable, or if the weather is bad, or if their toenails need trimming, or if it's laundry day...

Getting them out to vote is like herding cats. And it's why progressives deserve to lose.

This is one of the GOP's saving hopes. There's going to be concern-trolling this year the likes of which God himself has never seen.

That and vote suppression. My own state's Secretary of State is a dedicated Republican operative and has been busy looking for ways to keep ballots out of the hands of voters in the liberal cities.

Next summer will decide everything. 4th qtr of last year wasnt horrible giving potus a boost.... But...gas prices are at record highs for this time of year...economic recovery is still fragile at best...food prices continue to soar...will the short term economic boost of buying our own debt be enough to counter the inevitable pullback that follows...will it last until November or crash in the 2nd or 3rd qtr like last year...

wholedamnshow: Look, there's enough dirt on Romney where we don't have to take things that far out of context.

He said he enjoys being able to fire people that provide services to him. And he was talking about healthcare at the time.

He's implying that in our healthcare system we're not able to switch doctors or other healthcare providers that provide services to us.

Well, that's kinda true. I can choose from a lot of different doctors in my healthcare plan, but my company forces Aetna down my throat and my only other choice is to pay for my own healthcare insurance. And I don't get paid nearly enough to be able to afford that, so my two choices are to stay with Aetna or to not have health insurance.

So yeah, that kinda sucks.

But Romney isn't proposing any legislation that would help me out with my predicament. If anything, he'd like to repeal "Obamacare" and that would mean that my sons would be no longer eligible to be on my healthcare insurance plan again.

So the context isn't really helpful to Romney at all.

The best part is that 60% of Catholics support birth control, so this may end up creating a bit of schism in the Church itself, more than anything else...

I thought it was more like 98%, or is that just in America?

I know so many women (okay, like, three) who are too Catholic to use birth control, but not so Catholic as to avoid premarital sex. All of them ended up having kids as teenagers.

Catholics: Educate your children. If they're going to sin and have premarital sex, have them also sin and use birth control. Seriously.

Never understood this either. You are already "crossing the line" so to speak by having sex. Why not just be smart about it and use contraception?

/I am going to rob a bank, but I wont use a mask.....
//Seriously?

Because some men in power feel most comfortable when they have power over women. It's not about babies or Jesus, it's the fact that a woman can have sex and not have repercussions.
