HOPE AND CHANGE

The problem with the idea that he was going to close Gitmo is that it would only have been some symbolic gesture. We still need to determine what exactly the status of the inmates is, that was never made clear through Bush or Obama. Are they lawful or unlawful combatants? Federal prisoners? Prisoners of war? What would you do with them if Gitmo were to be closed?
I do like the part where he killed bin laden though.

So Republicans should be happy that they convinced everyone that torture, GITMO and drones are good things, and should support President Obama in his continuation of the policies they championed and fought tenaciously for over the course of almost a decade. Right?

Everyone knows the reason B. Hussein Fartbongo kept Gitmo open was that he flys down there to converse with the radical Islamic leaders to find new ways to bring America down

No, this is what happens when the secret muslim palling around with terrorist appeaser foreigner kills more terrorists in three years with less deaths than the God fearing cowboy, born again American did in eight. Republicans want to like him for it, but they think if they do they might catch teh gay or something.

And by the by, Obama opposes torture, the wars are ending and he attempted to close gitmo then congress through an absolute fit. He's two for three.

They are detainees. That is all you need to know citizen. DETAINEES. Ask too many questions and you might get a closer look at their situation.

I went to the Republican Caucus last night in Colorado.
They had resolutions on the table that talked about Gitmo - specifically that the party would only back candidates who were going to fight tooth and nail to keep it open and full of muslims.
/I didn't know they had a "bring your own bucket of crazy" rule. Fortunately by the time we were knee deep in it we'd broken out into precincts and I was able to keep my head down.

Quite the broad brush you got there. Those detainees aren't getting any better result under him. You going to ask him to keep trying...or was it enough that he tried to close GITMO once (which only would have moved the detainees, not given them back their due process rights)?
Sadly, Romney is no different that Bush or Obama on this stuff.
But the point stands, why aren't you who supported Obama's oh so righteous stands when he was running biatching now that he no longer is pushing those positions now that he has the power to do something about it?

Who is saying that? The only people who currently support torture are the ones who have always supported torture.
I remember when Obama tried to get some of the Gitmo detainees tried in a court in NY, and everyone freaked out about how it was "too close to Ground Zero" and how we were going to have terrorists escaping into the city.

Well, I guess since Obama has not done EVERY SINGLE THING to my liking, that means Sarah Palin is now president.
I hate the weak grasp authoritarians have when it comes to the notion of compromise. Obama has still done more good in four years than Bush did in eight. Do I agree with Obama on everything? No. Will I vote for him? Yes.

New York freaked. I'd still be thrilled if we didn't use GITMO or anywhere else as a oubliet.

FTA:
"A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that Obama, who campaigned on a pledge to close the brig at Guantanamo Bay and to change national security policies he criticized as
inconsistent with U.S. law and values
, has little to fear politically for failing to live up to all of those promises."
Obama's NDAA signing statement:
"My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens ... Indeed,
I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation
,"
Yeah, we believe you, Mr. President.

The President doesn't have the unilateral power to close Guantanamo Bay's detention center. Yes, he campaigned on it, but he didn't have the political capital to prod Congress into acting.
Sending Guantanamo detainees stateside is apparently ultimate NIMBY. It's like 100 nuclear reactors that work off of that really fabulous isotope of uranium running simultaneously, judging from the reactions of some Congressmen I've seen.
So, yeah, I'm going to give him a pass on Guantanamo.

It's funny. Conservatives seem to hate Obama more for doing the things they support than the things they're against.
It probably makes their cognitive dissonance flare up.

It's because he's a Democrat more than anything. They sure despised Clinton for balancing the budget and welfare reform. Yes some of them are ALSO racists, there's bound to be a lot of overlap, but it's mostly partisan hackery.

No, the article has a point. 'Nation building' was opposed as fascist when Bush did it, and as completely acceptable and stuff when Obama did it in Lybia. Also: Guantanamo could have been closed in the first two years of Obama's reign (when there was a Democratic congress) but wasn't. There *is* an element of 'same as the old boss' in this whole story, and clever oneliners in the reactions here aren't going to change that.

I live in a city that was looking at receiving Gitmo transfers to the Naval Brig at NWS Charleston. Our reps threw a fit at the idea of all of these terrorists escaping into the 22nd most dangerous city in the US. Silly me, I thought they were going to the brig to be imprisoned!
Anyhow, while I want to see the GITMO prison closed, I have to blame those that have blocked its closure for it remaining open. Drone strikes are dicey, but they're still directly controlled; I don't have a problem with tomahawks being used and those are effectively fire-and-forget. Drone strikes have the capability of being stopped right until blow-up time.

Meanwhile, this current crop of campaigners is trying to prove that they're most like the guy that sold weapons to our enemies in order to fund death squads ran by a South American dictator.
But yeah, Obama has ruined our country. I swear, every time I get to disliking a Democratic president, the Republicans go full force and make me support him again.
