I didn't know this little tidbit:

"When Dean introduced himself to actor Alec Guinness outside the Villa Capri restaurant in Hollywood, he asked him to take a look at the Spyder. Guinness thought the car appeared 'sinister' and told Dean: "If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week." This encounter took place on September 23, 1955, seven days before Dean's death."

Truely, the Force was strong with young Obi-Wan.

If Fark wouldn't greenlight a happy birthday to Eva Cassidy last week then why would I wish happy birthday to one of the worst hams ever to stand in front of a camera?

My gut feeling sez that James Dean never had any chance of reaching 81... hell, 41 would have been a stretch. Something was going to get him - if not hotrodding in the Spyder, then something else.

I always give a little begrudging respect to James Dean, just as I'd hope people younger than me would give a little begrudging respect to icons of my generation that passed that they have no real knowledge of except that by their own standards that star seems campy, hammy, outdated, superficial, and not very good at all outside of being stereotypically attractive. I mean what is James Dean outside a very handsome man, with a hidden life who died young after poorly plying his trade? Like Curt Cobain.

rudemix: Like Curt Cobain.

I'm sorry. You're making my point for me.

I drove to Fairmount, Indiana in 2001 just to take this. There are bits of chewing gum, cigarette butts and kisses all over his grave.

I would advise against enjoying his sausage. You'll make the late Sal Mineo jealous.

Watch East of Eden.

He was wonderful in East of Eden, and he was good in Rebel, too. I happen to love Giant, but mainly because of Taylor and Hudson's performances, not his particularly.

I was asking because I have no idea if he was an "all style, no substance" kind of icon, or if there was some legitimate talent there.

ToddMU03: Well, Fairmount is full of hicks.

This is true. The high school kids were hanging out at the gas station. Because that was all there was to do. Or, for a big thrill, they'd go to the KFC/Taco Bell in Gas City a few miles away.

Gas City isn't the place to be. Fairmount kids head to Marion for wild time. The high school hangouts back in my day were Steak n Shake and the mall. I lived in a different small town near Marion.

Man was it a culture shock when my parents moved us from Carmel to Grant County. My sister is married to a Fairmount native now.

Eh, he was overrated and died young. Put it this way, if people are talking about Heath Ledger 50 years from now he'll pretty much be James Dean.

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, had Ledger just had "10 Things" and "Knight's Tale", sure, but he was a farking awesome Joker. His portrayal was true talent.

I love his accent on the "au" in sausage and "ur" in purchase. He probaby doesn't have his teeth in but it sounds like he's from NYC then comes out with this twang.

You know what's funny until I found out how Paula Deen spelled her name, I was convinced that she was Jimmy Dean's widow, and that she was working on killing another husband. Ahh, misconceptions.

I would say that he was one of the best actors to come out of that Kazan/East Coast/Method school of acting. Like Brando, he was a very tactile, physical, and dynamic actor. Every teen star ever tries to steal his gimmick...I think that says something.
