Great. Now next year we're going to have full-body radiation measles scanners.

There are these things called MMR shots, that unless you are a backwoods hick and/or religious nutjob, you have had them as a child.

You know what's kind of funny about that? If you don't get the MMR vaccine because you're afraid it might bramage your dain, you could wind up getting measles which can damage your brain if you develop encephalitis as a complication. And complications are pretty common with measles.

To be fair, you don't know that the people infected skipped the vaccinations. There are people who can't receive them for various medical reasons. The same reason we can't just let the idiots who do opt out of vaccinations wander off and die in a cold gutter where they belong. It serves them right, but they put innocent people at risk in the process so it's better to care for the morons in the name of protecting people who don't deserve to get sick because of other people's brainless choices.

That is why all vaccines should be mandatory UNLESS you have a valid medical reason (allergic to eggs or whatever). Religious exemption should be done away with as well as "I just don't feel like vaccinating my kid".

She asked for this. Well, she asked for polio to come back and kill and disfigure some kids, but she did ask for a major outbreak of disease so we could get "safe vaccines". We have some pretty safe vaccines, despite the amount of FUD spread by anti-vaxers.

You left out paranoid conspiracy theorist.

My dad is convinced vaccines are going to seriously harm people. In that you will have levels of mercury/aluminum poisoning and in the case of MMR it is live virus so it actually just gives you a really mild form.

So, the only thing I've had is chicken pox, which I caught off my toddler brother when I was a teen.

Believe it or not, Mississippi and West Virginia are the only two states that allow just medical exemptions for school attending children. Link (new window)

I think we should still allow religious exemption. You know. In Amish communities. Or that parents have to sign a legally binding agreement that will be forwarded to every school in the state that will forbid their child from attending any public or private school. And that the parents must be legally compelled to disclose their children's status when they hire nannies or day care providers or try to enroll them in any extra curriculars. Just make it so ridiculous that they decide to finally vaccinate their damn kids.

congrats on the new one. it's weird the kinds of things that will send you into panic now. I have a three year boy old who started daycare a couple of months ago and he has already brought home an ear infection and strep throat, poor kid. hopefully his immune system is getting stronger.

Measles and Mumps can both cause sterility. Those that don't vaccinate are seriously inviting natural selection to remove them from the gene pool. Although it is far from common.

Poor kid! I always feel so helpless when mine get sick and are in pain.
I wouldnt normally be so crazy, but my baby is on antibiotics because he contracted MRSA somehow. Thankfully we caught it in time to treat it with just antibiotics and he didnt have to get admitted to the hospital. But now my new parent paranoia has been cranked up to Super Mega Paranoid.

AbbeySomeone: The people that were vaccinated don't have to worry fearmitter.

Not exactly. Vaccines don't work for a small percentage of the population. That is why it is important that you and everyone you are near are all vaccinated. When everyone else is vaccinated, it creates a buffer between the disease and the person for whom the vaccine does not work. People who don't vaccinate their children are putting not only their own children at risk, but others as well.

You know, it's all fine and dandy to say people have the right to freely worship, but at some point we really ought to start recognizing the fact that having an invisible friend isn't a free pass to fark everyone else over.

Worshiping freely shouldn't mean being able to subject other people to preventable illness. I'm all for people's rights, but it gets a little bit ridiculous when you start talking about people's "right" to believe in ancient myths versus another person's right to not get an actual, material illness that I can see with my own eyes and which has very real, direct, and severe consequences.

If you don't think it's fair that you have to abide by society's needs, don't live in a society.

How absurd this disease is even around anymore. My son had a bad reaction to his MMR; swollen leg, lethargy and fever, but I'd do it again anyway.

My friend is an anti-vaxxer, anti-bacterial wipes user and is one of those only-organic people, yet gives her kids raw milk. It really worries me. Her kids always end up sick when they play with my kids, and of course they have a ton of food allergies.

Young parents: having a sick kid is the worst, especially when they're babies. I spent weeks in the hospital between my three, as long as there are no chronic illnesses, they stabilize by first grade.

Worst shot I ever had to get was for Hep A. There was a restuarant that had an infected employee. Caused a bit of an outbreak so I had to get some thick goo shot in me (not that goo ya asses). But my folks made sure I had every other shot growing up.

I understand that no kid likes getting shots, but the way I see it is that if everyone else vaccinates their kids, then mine is unlikely to catch anything. And when I say that he hates it, I mean he hates it. Screaming, crying, the whole deal...

Good luck raising a child that can buffalo you with a tantrum.
And I won't even go into the herd immunity thing. But I will add that in many school districts, if any child develops measles, your child will have to stay out of school for the incubation period. Same with any of the other diseases for which vaccines are available.

AbbeySomeone: The people that were vaccinated don't have to worry fearmitter.

Not quite so. First, not everyone can get vaccinated. Second, not everyone who IS vaccinated is protected. Sometimes things just don't work. That's why we have herd immunity.

Now, we have a-holes who either stupidly think vaccines ARE the problem or stupidly think that vaccination is riskier than the disease or stupidly rely on the herd immunity because they don't want the slight, slight risk that does come with vaccination.

AbbeySomeone: The people that were vaccinated don't have to worry fearmitter.

Vaccinations don't work for everyone.
There are people with compromised immune systems who cannot be vaccinated.
There are innocent children with retarded parents who have not been vaccinated.

A quarter million people being exposed to the measles virus is nothing to dismiss as nothing to worry about.

When I was a kid in the 70's you had to have your shots or you weren't allowed to go to school. No school and you got an unfriendly visit from the social workers demanding explanations. Around here homeschooling is rare these days, but back then it was literally unheard of.

So... you see how this works. If you started school in the 60's through to the early 80's you were vaccinated- there was no alternative.

That's the way it was, and the way it should be today. There's all sorts of vaccines, so allergies aren't much of an excuse these days. There are vaccines for people with immune conditions. There are vaccines that are Kosher certified... there are vaccines to suit any and every type of need. So there's NO excuse anymore.

I've been vaccinated for everything including optional stuff like meningitis and some foreign crap when I went travelling. My immune system can kick ass 5 ways from Sunday and I'm proud of it.

So? It's called being the adult - you know - the parent.
And, so, because you refuse to be the adult in your household, you are relying on the goodwill and good sense of everyone else in your community to protect your kid by being the ADULTS that you SHOULD have been???
