John Williams is our Beethoven. I hear the Star Wars theme and it takes me back to being a kid again.

Just close your eyes and listen to these:

Jaws

Indiana Jones

Empire of the Sun

Jurassic Park

Schindler's List

That's only a few. He's knocked out too many to count.

Mugato: Greatest film composer ever.

No way.

Gustov Holst (new window)

A huge influence on Williams -consider that he wasn't even alive when most of the movie scores grabbed his work for their shows.

Holst: Mars (new window)

And we won't go near Henry Mancini (new window). Mancini's songs are simply catchy in a way that William's songs will never be.
One of Henry Mancini's best known songs. (new window)

Definitely. So many incredible movies that would have been so much less without his signature touch of magic.

Holst was a thief and a hack, like John Williams. Stole the whole melody and chord structure for "In the Bleak Midwinter" from Dvorak's 9th.

James Horner is the greatest American film composer. One could make an argument for Sergei Prokofiev as the best of all time just for Alexander Nevsky.

Also, that Jim Carrey sure does a great Bill Murray impression!

This is the best we can do for one of the most well-known modern composers? A 10 (well, 11) comment thread? Doesn't help it's in the Video tab, I guess.

Anyway...they're playing the Star Wars suite on WQXR right now...

One of my favorite moment in all the Star Wars trilogy was the scene on Cloud City when the good guys are getting their asses kicked and all is lost. Han got taken away, Luke is busy getting beaten down then R2 opens the doors and John Williams' music comes up was one of the best scenes in the trilogy, largely because of the music.

Another was when Superman as a baby escapes Krypton in that bi Christmas ornament and the music comes up. They're rebooting Superman yet again and will probably get a new guy to do the score. Good luck with that.

I didn't even like ET the movie but the score still makes me well up.

And bad movies with awesome Williams scores, Hook, the prequels, Jaws 2, he elevates everything he's involved with.

The ONLY thing worthwhile about Star Wars: Episode 1 is Duel of the Fates (new window)

Howevver, IMHO, Jurassic Park (new window) is still one of John Williams best pieces.

I love it when farkers argue over art, and personal opinions. "Mine's better." "no mine is." "no Mine IS."
Yell louder it HELPS!

Music/art is subjective, some people like green, some like blue.

However only the knuckle dragging simian morons like red.

I refuse to believe Mr. Jaws is better than the theme to Jaws. Something was wrong with 70s pop radio, something.

2012-02-08 02:17:45 PM
Williams was the pianist on Mancini's two "Peter Gunn" albums. He worked under the name of Johnny T. Williams.

2012-02-08 02:21:46 PM
I'm always partial to the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" score, mainly because the central theme of the piece played a big role in the plot of the film iteself.

2012-02-08 03:39:31 PM
I'd put Maurice Jarre right up there with Mr. Williams in the "giants of movie music" category. Oh, and Aaron Copland should be up there as well.

/Happy Birthday, Mr. Music Guy!

2012-02-08 04:08:16 PM
I really love these threads where Farkers argue over art because invariably they teach me a shiatload of stuff I should've known but didn't.

I used to think that John William's stuff pretty much sounded a like, and I guess I still think that. He's definitely the goto guy for grand anthems, and grand finales, and swelling music.

But it's also certainly the case that unlike all the other composers mentioned, he hasn't basically scored my life by writing for movie after movie after movie.

Then again, Home Alone has a lot Harry Potter in it.

Happy 80th Birthday then it is and thank you!

About 10 years ago, my wife and I met him outside the back door of the Boston Pops. Talked to him for a bit and got him to sign a copy of his greatest hits CD and also took a picture with him. He was very gracious and pleasant to us. So glad I finally got to meet one of my idols.

"John Williams is a hack who steals for so-and-so."

Never mind that John Williams' job is not just writing music but SCORING FILMS -- deciding HOW to use music to tell a story and intensify the film's emotions from moment to moment. Eliciting an emotion might be done effectively by using a familiar sound, but someone has to decide what that is and make it fit.

Whenever I come across a particularly difficult (and emergency) coding request I often shut my office door, grab my Walkman (the MP3 one; shut up, I like it), hook it up to the desktop speakers and put on The Battle of Yavin or The Battle of Hoth or The Battle of Endor.

His music has saved my bacon more time than I can fathom to count.

I love John Williams' music. I have a Pandora station I seeded with him alone and it is amazing. It's grown into all kinds of classical and folk-y type stuff. I farking love it. I can listen to it at work all day long and be happy.

This.

All the tools up ^ there ^ arguing over his general composing skills are missing the point. He made mediocre movies incredible. The music isn't meant to stand on it's own; it's meant to hold up the film.

Try watching Star Wars with the music off. It's a "meh" film at best.
