While Larsen won't discuss the matter, her followers, like Larry Chiricosta, are more than eager. "They leave and there is not an ounce of anything left on the beach. This is America. We should be allowed to do that."

This is silly. So when do they start charging people for walking on the beach in groups? Do you charge the group if they get over 15 walkers? 40 walkers? Does the number matter? What if they break into groups of 5?

Yoga might make them healthier, easy the stress in their lives and other benefits so i understand why the legislators if Floriduh do not want her to give free lessons. It might ruin the status quo.

The county does charge other yoga groups on other beaches per hour, bringing in thousands of dollars a year.
I think we've found our answer. It's all about how to squeeze more money out of the people.

What a wonderful idea. I go to a free yoga class at 6 am on Friday mornings (yeah that's why it's free) and then remember all the poses from that class and lead the grad students in my building in a yoga class that evening in the park. It's much more lovely under the trees next to a pond with ducks and what not and it's pretty hilarious to have the walkers watching a bunch of really nerdy kids doing yoga.

I looked into teaching a free yoga class in a park near a beach where I live and was given a similar response. The local council wanted $250 a year 'for insurance, in case someone gets hurt' Except that I am already covered up to $10million under my current liability insurance that covers any class I teach. They then replied that it was so they could reserve a spot for me. 6am on a weekday in a little park in a little town... Then when I brought up the possibility of just showing up there and doing yoga on my own and helping anyone who might happen to turn up at around the same time, they said they would spot check and charge me if they saw me. I never did go forward with the class, but I do sometimes picture some grumpy council worker peering around the little park at 6am.
To add a bit of irony to this, the council in the next town over pays ME to offer free yoga classes on the beach.

Most parks and public facilites I know charge fees for large group activities. Why is this new? If they charge other groups then its just a matter of fairness. Especially if they're competing withestablished yoga studios nearby who have to pay the overhead of rent and proper business licensing and insurance for liabilities.
Too many fees you say? Well if there's no state income tax perhaps they have to make it up somehow.

She should just ask people to bring protest signs. Then it would be a constitutionally protected gathering and the county could suck it.

I'm not sure in this case, but it isn't uncommon for real (have qualifications, have insurance) yoga teachers to offer a free class to the community. I can think of 5 teachers off the top of my head who do just in my city.

Used to be we could create jobs like this. A couple of people would get together and do something fun or productive, more would join in, and eventually there would be more entertainment or products than anyone could use, and so the extra could be sold at a profit, or reinvested to make better entertainment or products.
Somewhere along the line, people got it in their heads that they should get a share of the money, even if they stood around and did nothing. Then others decided they should get paid to not ruin the whole thing for everybody else. It got so bad they were trying to extort money from people who were just doing things for fun, and even forcing them to stop doing anything because they weren't making enough money to be worth the extortion.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble
, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Some people seem to forget these things, so maybe it bears repeating.
She's peaceably assembling, along with a few hundred of her close friends. No commercial activity is taking place (she doesn't charge; if someone wants to give her money, that's no business of the state, providing she declares it in her taxes of course), she is merely assembling peaceably in a public place, and speaking/moving.
Consider if, instead of a yoga class, it was a civics class, the principal teaching being a speech on some policy areas. And the County wants to tax that - that's what they're doing here.
In other words, completely unconstitutional.

Sarasota County has a very transparent email policy for public officials. I read about this.in a "concerned citizen's" email to a commissioner.

Well, by giving out free yoga classes, she IS affecting the price others can charge for their yoga classes, and that does affect commerce. Obama definitely needs to get involved here.

You should have told them that you were going to offer a free class at 5 AM instead on Saturdays or Sundays just to evade their patrols. (And then, of course, you would not have shown up.)

Whoa, whoa, whoa! People are doing things on taxpayer-funded property without paying for it? Paying again, I mean. People peaceably assembling, without permission? People selfishly working on their physical well-being while leaving vast amounts of nothing which doesn't have to be picked up by city workers?

Not to white knight a government, but if that's accurate $26 sounds like a pretty low price to have the town's police reserve your spot for two hours against anyone who might show up earlier and not feel like moving.

The only reason the "evil gubmint" got involved is because a bunch of retired snowbirds started inundating local politicians with emails and calls about "a large congregation on our beach."
It's not the big bad gubmint that's the problem, its your most.neighbors. But don't let that stop the Moran contingent on Fark from displaying their cerebral ineptitude once again.

Well, if your business model is based on charging for something that freely available, that's not so good.
I sell hugs for 5 buck, and if I see you hugging somebody I'm going to sue your ass off for infringing my trade. But you can buy into a franchise for $100 and you only have to give me a buck for each hug you give. FREE MARKET biatchES!!!

I have participated in many "yoga in the park" classes and we never had the police show up. I've also never had a problem with other people passing by and using the park. We just move our mats over and keep going. Most people were quiet and picked up after themselves. It's yoga. People generally don't get drunk and get into brawls.
Why not let her "opt out" of this hypothetical police protection and reservation? As long as she isn't charging and isn't asking for exclusive use of the beach or extra services, why should she need to pay? She's providing a free service that enhances the parks. No good deed goes unpunished.
/It's probably more about the need to have people "follow the rules" than it is about the money.
