The term "tentpole" and Adam Sandler should never ever be in the same article.

Still waiting for a movie about those little troll pens. Or something to do with Play Dough. Yeah, throw $100 bills at those ideas like confetti.

You'll never think of Chutes and Ladders the same.

Three weeks before that, Universal dropped Clue. (Perhaps someone remembered that in 1985 it had already been made as a movie with three possible endings, and that none of them ended well?)

You go to Hell! You go to Hell and you die!

Hasbro owns Wizards of the Coast, creators of Magic: The Gathering. That at least has a storyline, although it'd require LotR type money in order to produce. Mind you, the failure of Dungeons and Dragons is pretty telling.

TFA "BattleShip has no movie stars".

Someone should call Liam Neeson's agent!

And when they get the agent on the phone, tell them to ... "Unleash The Kraken!"

(Seriously though - Neeson's not a star and Sandler is? Did I cross over into that crap reality where those Kardashian people are celebrities?)

Signed in 2008, the pact originally anticipated a far-less-costly moviemaking world in which movie stars wouldn't be the attraction, brands would.

Come with me now all the way back to 2008, when audiences cared whose ass it was and why it was farting.

Could we at least have gotten a decent Dungeons & Dragons reboot out of the deal?

Hell, I'd take a Magic: The Gathering movie (Mostly to wash my mouth of what The Sorcerer's Apprentice did to it...)

I'd like to see more movies based on popular video games. Weren't they going to do a Warcraft movie at one point? WoW, Elder Scrolls, FF, and a dozen other franchises all have rich, layered stories that could provide enough worthwhile plot material for a decent movie.

/That phone call from J. Edgar Hoover was for me

(Battleship is a giant action movie about a battleship officer leading a fight against aliens: Why did they even need a brand name for that? And even if at one point someone coyly utters the catchphrase, "You sunk my Battleship!" isn't that a pop-culture reference that could have been made without paying millions in rights fees?)

this is the part that confuses me about this whole project. they paid all that money to use the name "battleship" but the movie really has nothing to do with the game. they could have used the exact same script and retitled it "navy vs aliens" and no one would have even known it was supposed to be based on battleship at all. what's the point of buying the rights to a brand name and then making a movie that has nothing to do with the brand name?

and let's not forget that the navy doesn't actually have battleships any more, so the title makes no sense anyway.
