If I was a psychologist I would do nothing but be an expert witness. You get paid well and you can work either side of a case depending on which side pays you more.

That's a sad story of a law that should have turned into a constitutional amendment. I'd like to see people forced to don extravagant costumes for all sorts of odd reasons.

Psychiatry. It's relegated to the arts for a reason. If there's one thing we as a species are not qualified to study and reach conclusions about scientifically, it's our own brains and how they work. Wait, what?

When a psychologist or psychiatrist testifies during a defendant's competency hearing, the psychologist or psychiatrist shall wear a cone-shaped hat that is not less than two feet tall. The surface of the hat shall be imprinted with stars and lightning bolts. Additionally, a psychologist or psychiatrist shall be required to don a white beard that is not less than 18 inches in length, and shall punctuate crucial elements of his testimony by stabbing the air with a wand. Whenever a psychologist or psychiatrist provides expert testimony regarding a defendant's competency, the bailiff shall contemporaneously dim the courtroom lights and administer two strikes to a Chinese gong

The so-called "forensics experts" testifying about blood splatter patterns, gunshot residue, bite-mark analysis and those freaks that claim to be able to match a fired bullet to a specific weapon should all be forced to testify in costume... actually this type of psuudo-science CSI crap shouldn't even be allowed in a courtroom.

2012-02-07 04:11:43 PM
If it's a psychiatrist that's actually had the person they're talking about as a patient, i.e. they're giving the results of a court-ordered psychological examination that actually subjected the person to tests, then this is uncalled-for. That's their job, and they're following established standards and procedures.

If they're an "expert witness" with no actual knowledge of the case or the person whose sanity is being questioned, you might as well. Because if that's what they're doing, they're just a criminal profiler, and studies of profiler accuracy have shown it to lie somewhere between looking at your horoscopes and asking some random blue-collar guy at a bar.

Pfff, my rule usually is "if it isn't nailed down, and no one is watching, loot it" but that comes from playing Fallout for the last 15 years or so. Out in the real world, I have to modify that rule with "and I can carry it reasonably".

/A lot of times that leads to just taking pictures, and cracking open the odd rock to see if it has a candy center.

Agh, It's all about the integrity of the shot... See of I start moving stuff around to "make a better shot" Im pretty much farking with my own ability to make something bland into something awesome ;)

Also, I have yet to find something worth lugging around in the desert (also, haven't managed to find a body yet lol) Although, I WAS at an abandoned factory three days before the body of a meth head was found, and they say he had been there at least a week... I was farking around in the docking areas, not inside, so I didn't find him...

Why stop at psychiatrists? Have lawyers dress up as giant ticks or leeches... make cops where something akin to a 50s' era motorcycle cop, and witnesses whose testimony is given in exchange for immunity? Dress them in giant rat or canary suits.

Politicians get the prostitute outfits.

I'm ok with this.

Now as an alternative I'd like every jury to receive a primer on the difference between 'any doubt' and 'reasonable doubt'

Due to the active measures taken to recruit juries with as little cognitive ability as possible, I'm mostly convinced that if defense council would suggest that space aliens may have intervened there is one guy on the jury who will think "Well it isn't likely that space aliens intervened, but that would be an alternative explanation for how that murder went down.....I don't think I have enough evidence to convict here anymore"
