Breitbart, the whiny little biatches of the conservative chattering class.

The Onion makes fun of alot of stuff. Why, one of my very favorite old pieces of theirs is pro-deregulation and makes fun of nanny-statism.

They should make their own Onion. They could call it the American Thinker.

Didn't they try to make a right-wing comedy TV show? And didn't it get cancelled before it came back from its first commercial break?

When a GOP Congressman believes the Onion's Abortionplex article, I think we can safely assume right wingers "don't get it."

It's a classic case of misdirection, a comedic attempt to distract voters from Obama's lifestyle, including lavish Halloween parties thrown by Hollywood elite and taking money-sucking vacations on our dime.

I don't even know how to respond to this...

Well, you could try being funny yourselves. Of course, last time conservatives tried being funny, we got the Half Hour News Hour.

Conservative "humor" seems to consist largely of name-calling and really-stretching-it puns. When that becomes the primary content of The Onion, then the conservatives might have a chance.

/Also whatever it is that Dennis Miller does. Hyper-referential rapid-fire hate diatribes?

I was reading the comments section below the article and found this gem.

"The Leftist wing of the American population is so desperate to keep their dream alive they just can't bring themselves to live up to their proudly stated principles if those principles lead them to criticize Obama, or whoever he is. Journalists practicing journalism would have to criticize Obama, or whoever he is, so these journalists abandon journalism. Comedians known for ridiculing the arrogantly powerful turn instead to ridiculing the earnest criticizers of arrogant power since the seat of that arrogant power is Obama, or whoever he is. The dream they are all trying so hard to keep alive is that of a collectivist utopia. Obama, or whoever he is, will be the one to lead us there if only we would love him enough."

I know I'm probably reading this incorrectly but it makes me happy to think that there's some contingent of people out there who thinks Obama is not Obama. When I read this it makes me think of an invasion of the body snatchers type scenario. Really, it's no crazier than the birther's beliefs.

Colbert made a comment (out of character) when asked about the show that comedy is all about making fun of the establishment and authority which goes against what 'conservatism' is all about. He would watch it if it was funny. But it wasn't. And it died a quick death.

Oh, boo hoo. The Onion doesn't satirize the president as much as the not-RIGHT-in-attic crowd thinks they should. Maybe this is because right-wingers don't tend to recognize satire. ultraholland: Republicans are inherently humorless.

They have a different kind of humor. Liberals generally like humor about the unexpected variety of life (ex: "what's long, brown and sticky? A stick!"), conservatives enjoy about the unavoidable cruelty of life (ex: "the difference between a dead lawyer and dead skunk in the road? Skid marks before the skunk.").

Where the liberal generally enjoys humor that challenges expectations, conservatives enjoy the predictable persecution of the individual.

actually i see The Onion article as more of a shot at left-wingers who are criticizing Mitt Romney for living in a huge mansion. You could point out his hypocrisy regarding class by asking "Which is it; are the rich innocent successes being hounded by the envy of bitter failures, or are Hollywood elites frittering away our national wealth on lavish parties?"

You could get personal, attacking his initial reason for creating Bug Hollywood by saying, "And yet your scripts still suck."

You could ask him "Ok; what do you think would be a suitably humble way to make kids forget for a few hours that they may never see their parents alive again?"

If you wanted to be really dismissive, you could give him a good long look and say, "wow, you look tired".

The preferred response for the sake of everyone's sanity, however, would of course be to roll your eyes, slowly wank a giant invisible cock towards his person and say, loudly and obnoxiously, "Come OOOOONNNN."

What I don't get about that sketch is that it features a guy publicly brandishing a handgun who's constantly threatening to kill people with it, not "sport shooting" or "hunting" - the absurdity of the signs notwithstanding, does that not argue *for* gun control? Are we really expected to not think that the real joke is that that guy has a gun in the first place?

once again, is anybody REALLY surprised by this?

'The Onion', not regarded a serious news outfit anyway, is an inner city-centric parody paper that appeals to the kool aid crowd. That they occasionally tweak them is due to their eminnent 'tweakability'; the progressives are so anal they are easy to parody. Lockstep thought does that to a person.

So 'The Onion' is pro Obama. As the sun rises in the East...

Libs are easy to parody, but we continually fail to parody them. What does this tell us?

I know I'm probably reading this incorrectly but it makes me happy to think that there's some contingent of people out there who thinks Obama is not Obama. When I read this it makes me think of an invasion of the body snatchers type scenario. Really, it's no crazier than the birther's beliefs.

I'm a pretty centrist guy, or moreover a mixed bag when it comes to politics. I don't like appeals to stupidity, so lately that has put me way in the "D" camp. However, I don't want to dismiss the idea of conservatives being funny completely. Maybe they can only create humor that is apolitical. Ron White is really funny, and there's plenty of southern fellers that tell funny jokes about this and that going on in the country. Hell, I like Foxworthy's stuff and even Larry the Cable Guy was good for a few yuks on XM Comedy.

But whenever they attempt to make political humor, it just ends up seeming at best smug and at worst completely mean-spirited.

Is this confirmation bias on my part?

oh my god. my soul hurts from watching that. i don't even believe in a soul, and mine hurts from viewing that. did conservatives really think that was funny??? Are they aware that you can't just repeat your lame talking points in a sarcastic tone of voice and expect that to be a joke?

I have viewed only one other segment from that show. It also related to firearms regulation. It also was not funny.

Can you imagine what would have happened if they'd have been given a few more episodes. A man dressed as a rabbi or a gangsta, reading conservative forwarded emails, but with all the affirmative statements turned into negative ones. They'd call it "real life liberal forwarded email corner" or something.

All comedy is based on reality, then kicked up a notch or two. That's how people can relate to it. Telling a joke about a horse walking into a bar is funny because horses can walk, and people walk into bars all the time. But if you completely ignored reality and said "a horse flew into a bar using its wings", without there being some pay-off in the joke with (maybe) a Pegasus pun, it's just saying random unfunny things.

That's why a political ideology that eschews reality for its core platform can't be intentionally funny no matter how much they whine about it.

That's the beauty of it. The real take aways from the sketch are:

1. This area clearly requires a much larger police presence
2. Some dealer (possibly multiple ones) are selling guns under the table so criminals can easily get them.

The clear solution is to expand the police force. More patrols and a probe into the local gun dealers, capped with some arrest and convictions. We'll have to raise taxes and expand police powers for all this though.

It's secret liberal propaganda.

I suspect confirmation bias is also in play. They surround themselves constantly with knuckle dragging ingrates like themselves who also laugh at rude or inane "jokes" and simply assume if they and their friends think it's funny, surely everyone else will too.

WizardofToast: The Onion actually makes fun of Obama and the Democrats plenty of times. It's just that when Republicans are made fun of that right-wing bloggers get fussy.

They aren't even angry, really, it's just a way to keep the base frothing and possibly "play the refs" by pressuring whoever they're complaining about to stop criticizing them. Its been a pretty effective way to make the mainstream media stop pointing out when cons lie and treat their policy advice as something worth taking seriously. Luckily, it isn't something likely to work with the Onion.

Stop being absurd, and they'll stop making fun of you.

Maybe if they whine enough, like with politifact, the onion will cave and start making fun of liberals for believing the earth is not 6000 years old.

Thing is, that's not a "liberal" thing. The Onion has made fun of many Democrats over the years. It's all about who provides the best material. Whoever is the most absurd gets the most satire about them. Right now, the Republicans are simply far more absurd than anybody else on the planet.

It's like Jon Stewart said, he makes fun of absurdity. He railed on the Bush administration so heavily because they were absurd. When it was suggested that he wouldn't make fun of the Obama administration because they're Democrats, he responded to the effect that if the new administration is as ridiculous as the last one, he'll have plenty of useful material. So far he's been true to that sentiment.

If you don't like being ridiculed, don't be ridiculous.

good question -- it's the reason they perpetuate the myth of the liberal media. they can be hyper right wing partisan, and then say "well, we're just trying to balance things out, because the rest of the media is SO LIBERAL" The media doesn't have a political bias. It has a profit bias.

Dimensio: BunkoSquad: Didn't they try to make a right-wing comedy TV show? And didn't it get cancelled before it came back from its first commercial break?

This sketch from the show should explain why the show failed. I am in agreement with the intended sentiment of the sketch, yet I cannot deny that the sketch is not humourous due to a lack of subtlety and an extension of the intended joke for far longer than was necessary.

This is what these people don't get. The approach to comedy should be "make it funny, and if you get some pointed politcal barbs in there, even better". The right-wing approach to humor seems to be "slam Obama and the liberal libs who support him. Be wacky, whatever that means. Remember, our target audience will be grateful for conservative humor, so we don't need to worry about being too clever. The good will alone will guarantee to laughs."

Yeah, that's about the gist of it.
And when we try to explain it, instead of trying to understand the explanation they double down on insisting a) that they are actually funny, b) that others are jealous, c) that we "don't get it" and d) that we are oppressing them. It's pitiful.
Ironically, they are so lame, yet insistent they it becomes funny. Though it's situational humor, not jokes.

Today's right wing have been coddled not only by their own 24 hour propaganda network, but by a news media too afraid of being called liberal to call them out on their ridiculousness. It doesn't matter what crazy irresponsible things they do, their talking points are granted legitimacy in the name of "balance."

Republicans have gotten so used to this, they expect comedians, movies, sketch comedy shows, etc to do the same thing. For every 1 joke about Republicans, there has to be a counterweight to insult the Democrats.

CSB time. My cousin (Big Rush Limbaugh fan) posted up a fb screed about the "eye of the tiger" guy suing Newt for using his song. He went on and on about how "This isn't about copyright law! This guy just hates Newt and Republicans so he's playing politics!"

Yeah. Of course the guy is playing politics. He hates Newt and doesn't want his song to help Newt's campaign. He doesn't have to be "fair," whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

Like Finley Dunne said a good newspaper should do, good humor should comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Making fun of a minority group for wanting rights does neither of those things.

Also, that's a statement, not a question. The first letter of a sentence should be capitalized. If you're going to live in America, it pays to learn how to write in English.

factoryconnection: I'm a pretty centrist guy, or moreover a mixed bag when it comes to politics.

Some of those guys may be Republicans -I don't know them and don't interest myself in the issue so I can't speak to their politics- but I've been rather surprised by the open-mindedness expressed by some of the folks on the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour". As to Larry his act is a lot like Foxworthy's old one; it's a spoof of his audience and of what his audience thinks out-groups think about them, so I don't really know where you'd put it down on the political spectrum. But you're right, that it probably goes too far to say no con can be funny.

theknuckler_33: When comedians make fun of conservatives, they use things that right wingers actually say or very close approximations (like this awesome clip (new window)). When 'comedians' make fun of left wingers, they have to invent some over-the-top caricature of what liberals are really like (like the 'gun-free zone' thing).

It goes backwards as well, in all the wrong ways. When I laugh at comic violence, it's an over-the-top caricature of the real thing, like Butters' tap-dancing accident in South Park. Conservatives laugh at actual violence.

To be fair, the conservatives have their share of satirists too. Rush Limbaugh being first and foremost among them, and when he's not being his egotistical, narcissistic self, doesn't he strike so close to home to draw their darkest hatred? From Barack the Magic Knee-grow, actually borrowed from a Los Angeles Times op ed column by David Ehrenstein, to Love Me Like Barack, a play on an old Simon & Garfunkel song, used to poke fun at Hillary Clinton's inability to generate the same level of loyalty among Democrat voters that President Obama did.

once again, is anybody REALLY surprised by this?

'The Onion', not regarded a serious news outfit anyway, is an inner city-centric parody paper that appeals to the kool aid crowd. That they occasionally tweak them is due to their eminnent 'tweakability'; the progressives are so anal they are easy to parody. Lockstep thought does that to a person.

So 'The Onion' is pro Obama. As the sun rises in the East...

Libs are easy to parody, but we continually fail to parody them. What does this tell us?

I suspect this is a right-wing euphemism for "n****r-lover", and is even more of a funny as The Onion started at the very white-bread University of Wisconsin.

sendtodave: Humor has a liberal bias. I blame the Jews.

LOL.

My brother, very conservative, didn't get this joke:

A 95-year-old man is talking to his 85-year-old female friend in the nursing home and he says "You know what I miss? Sex." The friend says "You're too old for sex!" and he answers "I know. At this point, I'd be happy to just have someone take it out and hold it every now and then." The woman "Well I can do that," so it turns into a regular thing: every Tuesday afternoon she comes to his room, they sit quietly next to each other and she holds his equipment for half an hour.

One Tuesday she comes to his room and the door's ajar. She looks in and sees him with another woman! So she tiptoes quietly away and the next day says to him "I see you've found somebody else." He says "I'm afraid so." She says "What does she have that I don't have?" and he answers "Parkinson's."

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that this man's rebuttal-to a satire piece about Obama's lifestyle-is to talk about what a lavish lifestyle the president leads, especially with those examples. How does he not understand that was the entire butt of the joke?!

And that's why "conservative humor" fails. Because the humorless pricks don't know funny if it crawls up their ass, clamps onto their spinal cords, and makes them dance the Watusi.

Skyrim is not a religious video game any more than World of Warcraft is; just having religions in-game does not a religious game make. Thing is, Christian mythology is a gold mine for material you could make amazing games out of, and some people have. The "problem", if you can call it that, is that if you place the game first it's no longer an effective didactic/brainwashing tool, any more than Okami converted people to Shinto.

Years ago I remember one of the Mortal combat variants having Kali as a playable character. Now mythology is a rich vien for video games to tap, but here was an actual goddess from a religion a few hundred million people still follow. Can you imagine the outcry if those game designers had also included, say, Jesus as a PC and say give him a finishing move that involved nailing his opponent to a cross?

CapnBlues: Robespierre: Why doesn't Brietbart ever saying anything nice about Obama? I assume, because he even posted this article, he is of the opinion that all media organization should always give all opinions equal merit within their organization, the therefore the Onion has committed a travesty by only issuing articles that mock things that they don't support. I am sure glad brietbart has a dead even number of pro Obama and anti Obama articles, with equal intensity in each articles criticism or support.

good question -- it's the reason they perpetuate the myth of the liberal media. they can be hyper right wing partisan, and then say "well, we're just trying to balance things out, because the rest of the media is SO LIBERAL" The media doesn't have a political bias. It has a profit bias.

Seems to me its even simpler than that. Like all socially conservative arguments, it boils down "What's with these people liking something that I don't like?!" Hell, yesterdays article about gay teen suicides was essentially the same thing. People were blaming Christians in the threads, but really, its not Christians that are the problem, its Conservatives, and their hatred of anything that moves against their tribe.

Oh I know, I was kinda kidding. The bible would be kinda cool to play if they did some of the more gory/controversial parts of it, like sacrificing chickens or offering up daughters to get raped, or cutting babies in half. However usually Christian themed games are pushing one huge lame agenda.

CapnBlues: Still waiting for that very funny but not hateful gay marriage humor.

If I was to mock it, it'd be a sketch loosely following the outline of two grooms arguing over wedding details like decor theme until the planner kills herself by jumping out the window. Then they just go "fark it, marriage sucks", get drunk, fade to black. They wake up in a hotel bed in Vegas facing each other, wearing wedding bands. After a brief moment of nausea then catharsis and intimacy they sit up and notice two more guys asleep in the same bed (one to either side of them) wearing the same wedding bands.

Not sure if that's funny, but it is possible to make fun of anything. The problem with right-wing humor is that political comedy is basically empathy tainted with cynicism. The empathy's needed to give the cynicism something to react with. When your cynicism is shaped by social constructions (gays = bad) instead of something people can relate to (weddings = PITA), any attempt to interpret something as humorous is basically guesswork.

"Comedy is the refuge of the weird, the offensive, the ostracized and the opressed. Conservatism througout history has rejected and demonized the nonconforming. gay marriage is pretty absurd, but I don't see them making fun of it?

See? This is what I'm on about. This is what qualifies as Republican Humor. Open sarcastic bigotry. Ripe for parody.

Every bigot is a walking bulls-eye.

Including you, my friend. Everyone should have the right to marry, but if you don't think gay marriage is ripe comic material, you need a new funny bone.

why don't you tell us some funny gay marriage jokes that aren't rooted in a place of bigotry?

There seem to be many movies and tv shows that feel that way. Lots of jokes about failing marriages and couple not getting along. You know what? There are a lot of people going through real problems like that Do you think they think that kind of stuff is funny? Maybe it isn't!

CapnBlues: I heart that man. he's fantastic.

Yeah, but his life and stand-up are really kind of sad. I mean, we laugh at them, but they're sad.

And that's the thing about really good comedy, it's got a lot of tragedy in it. There's pathos. It requires that you feel something for somebody. You laugh because you recognize the tragedy, and you know it could happen to you, or it has happen to you. In other words, a fair degree of empathy is required. It's why Ron White is funnier than Larry the Cable Guy.
Because Ron's stories are kinda sad in a way.
Richard Pryor was funnier after he lit himself on fire, because his stories had some element of sadness. There was tragedy, and we can laugh at shared tragedy.
Many Jewish people make great comedians. Why? Because they see so much horror in everyday life. They see ridiculousness in social convention, and they have a vast history of getting shiat on to hone their understanding of how tragic life really can be. And that's VERY funny.

So the only person who could make fun of gay marriage is somebody that is IN a gay marriage. And they wouldn't be mocking the fact that they wanted to marriage and that was absurd. The comedy would come from a guy lamenting on stage that he only gets to suck one dick for the rest of his life. And it would be funny.

You can't mock a group you have power over, that's not comedy. It's the reason rich white men have to take it on the chin from everybody else when it comes to comedy. They have the most, they get to say the least. It's just how it works, and if they have a problem with it, they can go dry their tears on their big piles of money.

This may be relevant to your interests.

Ok, I have to say that I won't probably be in line with where doubled99 was coming from, but I do think that there could be funny gay marriage jokes. However, they'd come from the 'liberal' comedy rather than conservative comedy (if it even exists). It would mostly be over the top, stereotypical exaggerations, though, like skits where both of them want to be in charge of decorating the house or neither of them will kill a big bug or something.

You're working really hard to spin this one. Most het couples don't bicker over decoration details. It would be quite a role reversal (and interesting comedy in and of itself) for a man to bicker over details while the woman just goes off to have a beer. A bit primetime sit-comish, but could still be worked. However, bickering over wedding details isn't typical of a het couple and as such isn't much of a "hey, it goes both ways!" situation. The joke relies solely on the stereotypical cattiness of the flaming queen caricature.

Also, bigamy isn't legal in Vegas, so it doesn't follow that a pile of dudes waking up married to each-other is just some drunken night out. This is why I am confused at your second "plot". It can't happen to het couples, so how does it work for gays? It's just nonsense. Not even comedic nonsense. What's the message? Where's the joke? I guess if they were married to the other guys, but not each other, then there's something to work with, but then it isn't a "gay marriage" joke, it's a "Hangover Part 3" joke, and as such doesn't apply to the topic at-hand.

Help me out here.

But I don't think his opinion matters, as Fark has a resident persecution expert here in CapnBlues to determine that everything anyone ever says about anyone is steretypical and offensive.

Okay, I see the trolls are starting to come out full-force, and I've got work to do. Suffice it to say that not a single example of valid, non-bigoted humor at the specific topic of "gay marriage" has been provided, and I'll leave it at that.

/Hint: You can't make a non-bigoted joke about something that, by its very name is already a bigoted slur.

jagec: You're an incredible moron. ALL comedy involves outrageous stereotypes and situations which are recognizable, but taken to the extreme.

I'm glad that I actually have a sense of humor. I can't imagine that life would be worth living if I was like you. PLEASE tell me that you don't vote.

Your ad hominem aside, comedy, at its root, is very simple -- expectancy violation. You're expecting one thing, you get another. This is shown scientifically, even as simple as tickling. Tickling is tactile stimulation that is at first perceived as danger, but ends up being benign, thus the humor response as a signal to other organisms that what's happening is okay.

Life is plenty worth living, because I don't define joy as the socially sanctioned injury of other human beings. If you think the Chapelle's Show is funny because it makes it okay to say racist things, you didn't get the joke of the show and are part of the reason why he quit making it. I vote, even in small local elections, and I want to point out that at no point in this response did I accuse you of lesser intelligence. If you're looking for "humorists" who insult your intelligence, I suggest you listen to Rush Limbaugh.

jokes about polish people, italian people, and individuals with blond hair are absurdist, because no one actually believes in those stereotypes. the harmful thing about gay jokes is that people take them as tacit endorsements of negative stereotypes. Here's a funny one from the movie philadelphia:

Kuroshin: You're working really hard to spin this one. Most het couples don't bicker over decoration details. It would be quite a role reversal (and interesting comedy in and of itself) for a man to bicker over details while the woman just goes off to have a beer. A bit primetime sit-comish, but could still be worked.

Sigh. . . The point of humor was that if conventional wedding plans involve one side deciding all the details (stereotypically the bride), in this case, both thought the same way so there was no "go-to" person for the planner to work with. I honestly arbitrarily made them control freaks; the rest was just projection. But hey, we can just as easily make them both apathetic if that's what you feel would advance the cause of gay rights, as long as the wedding planner has a nervous breakdown in the end. I came up with it in fifteen seconds, and my biggest regret is being stupid enough to suggest anything that would be picked apart by a bunch of prudes in full-blown persecution mode.

Kuroshin: Also, bigamy isn't legal in Vegas, so it doesn't follow that a pile of dudes waking up married to each-other is just some drunken night out. This is why I am confused at your second "plot". It can't happen to het couples, so how does it work for gays? It's just nonsense. Not even comedic nonsense. What's the message? Where's the joke?

Ah, so like CapnBlues you're assuming I had them all marry each other? When four dudes wake up all wearing the same wedding band, you think that's the only possibility?

How about this: With two men and two women (all straight) waking up in the same Vegas hotel room wearing wedding bands, at least you can narrow down the wedding partners to two possible combinations (AB&CD or AD&BC). With four guys, there's no telling who married who; the combinations are AB&CD, AC&BD, AD&BC. But the wedding bands all have to be identical for this sort of confusion to happen. The joke was more rooted in mathematical permutation than stereotype, and it's possible because all four people are the same gender.

When combinatorics gets mistaken for bigamy, I wonder who's really the bigot here.

I get your point somewhat, as gay people do contend with much more than their fair share of discrimination and more violent and serious discrimination than many other groups, but there are absolutely people who DO believe blond women (or women in general) are dumb, and treat them like they are dumb when they first meet them. I'm sure there are people who still treat Polish people as inferior, too.

The joke in the article you referenced is that people actually look at a gay pride parade and think it's representative of the homosexual lifestyle. It is, again, a joke that pokes fun at bigots.

dragonchild: Ah, so like CapnBlues you're assuming I had them all marry each other? When four dudes wake up all wearing the same wedding band, you think that's the only possibility?

Ah, yes, the old "recognizing bigotry is the true bigotry" argument. I'm not offended just as an LGBT ally (someone who, unlike you, recognizes human rights and justice in the world), but also as someone who appreciates actual comedy, not lame attempts at shock-humor through polyamory.

ELKAY: I was reading the comments section below the article and found this gem.

Are we really expected to not think that the real joke is that that guy has a gun in the first place?

You are correct; a total prohibition upon civilian firearms ownership is the logical conclusion of the sketch, and from the observation of the effectiveness of such prohibition in cities such as Chicago and Washington, DC.

CapnBlues: i should add here that no liberal believes that just putting up a "gun-free zone" sign will actually prevent crimes. that's the fantasy that the bit is making fun of.

You are correct. Additionally, no legislator would argue that prohibiting the possession of firearms within a particular type of establishment would prevent robberies within those establishments.

Or, alternatively, that an attempt at satire was constructed poorly is not evidence that the satire is not accurate.

once again, is anybody REALLY surprised by this?

'The Onion', not regarded a serious news outfit anyway, is an inner city-centric parody paper that appeals to the kool aid crowd. That they occasionally tweak them is due to their eminnent 'tweakability'; the progressives are so anal they are easy to parody. Lockstep thought does that to a person.

So 'The Onion' is pro Obama. As the sun rises in the East...

Are you gonna cry now? Oh wait I think you already did.

Bush spent more than 1000 days on vacation in his 8 years of presidency. Obama has had far less vacation days than Bush had at the same point.
Controse - February 6th, 2012 at 1:27 pm

The Leftist wing of the American population is so desperate to keep their dream alive they just can't bring themselves to live up to their proudly stated principles if those principles lead them to criticize Obama, or whoever he is. Obama, or whoever he is, will be the one to lead us there if only we would love him enough.
peterfny - February 6th, 2012 at 1:28 pm

I never understood the whole Onion thing. I've read a few issues and seen their web site and they are far less funnier than they seem to think they are. Try as they might, they are NO National Lampoon.

YES... most Americans are completely unaware of these subliminal messages! The whole point of Big Hollywood.. and all that Breitbart is trying to expose.

And most of these high school, college educated people, are not even sure which direction the sun rises. Ask them.

*BREAKING NEWS* The Onion manages to get nation's whiners to throw thumb-sucking tantrum over it's "spoof" content. This was accomplished mostly by typical outrage manufacturing techniques used by those who do all the thinking for the whiners counting on their obedience to never look up the word "spoof" in the dictionary.

Oh, they mad on cue! LOL
zombiezapper - February 6th, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I've seen them make fun of Obama too. Several times. This is just the standard Onion ridiculous fake news story.

This post seems like an attempt by the Onion to satirize overly sensitive political bloggers. Are you a plant?

The problem with gay marriage jokes and conservatives is that they really can't handle the mental imagery involved in imagining the topic at all.

Let's see-we've had humor argued as non-subjective and proven by math, several attempts at defining what is funny by citing the dictionary, wikipedia and youtube, and explanations of why things many feel are humorous are, in fact, not funny, offensive, and indicative of a character flaw in the individual.

This thread is the Rosetta Stone for identifying and understanding the humorless.

People who think someone or something is "keeping them down" are pretty easy to rile up and manipulate.

Usually their choice in personal oppressor tells you what their particular biases might be, but it all comes from the same feeling of powerlessness. Everything from RONPAUL to Moorish Nationalists are basically a bunch of people struggling for some semblance of control over their lives.

The Onion does have some real influence on morons who don't know satire when they see it. http://literallyunbelievable.org/ (when it'snot down, as it is right this second for some reason) has a whole bunch of Facebook screencaps of people reacting to links to theonion.

Yeah, we point and laugh, but those are voters. I suspect that the reason why they paint Obama as nerdy, or exasperated with the American people is because A) it's funny and B) it could hurt his reelection chances among the stupid if they were to paint him as a secret Buddhist or underground battle rapper.

Comedy, like music, is the one thing that only liberals can seem to regularly master for broad appeal.

Conservatives can't do this, in short because they're brain-damaged.

Conservatives have lost or have never developed the part of their brain that allows them to think from another person's perspective and to empathize with that perspective--something that's critical for effective mastery of comedy. Because of this, their attempts at comedy come across as either elevated and condescending or overly puerile, both of which reflect a severe lack of understanding of other people, including what others find funny.

It's a pervasive, far-reaching deficiency that infects even their political views and corresponding actions, and it's the reason I'd never, ever vote for someone who lacks a sense of humor, because it reveals a severe disconnect between the politician and his people.

This is why I don't like the current republicans in the media. Their messages are so inherently selfish. It is always about republican values and about how they are being persecuted by others. It is never about the man next to you and what he believes. On fox news all you here is how conservative values are UNDER ATTACK!!! America being DESTROYED from within!!! Also telling the viewers, quite blatantly, that people should be outraged at exactly what their republican buddies are mad about.

The worst part is they sound like a bunch of whiny pieces of shiat while doing it. At least Democrats on TV try to identify with others. I really don't understand how people Identify with the crying and biatching...

Also note I meant those on television and media. I get along with republicans, personally, as long as they don't spout the same shiat they heard from one source, especially a blog.

Don't expect entertainment media to do what right-wingers want until right-wingers come up with a single show that doesn't suck donkey balls. Isn't that how your precious free market works? If your ideas aren't being sold, it's because nobody is willing to buy them.

Completely off topic, but why does Victoria Jackson have a ukulele?

Cyno01: BunkoSquad: Didn't they try to make a right-wing comedy TV show? And didn't it get cancelled before it came back from its first commercial break?

What about the Colbert report.

/I wonder if there's a big segment of colbert report viewers who aren't in on the joke
//I like to think there is

I used to frequent a message board where a self-avowed ultraconservative used a quote from The Colbert Report in his signature. I don't think anyone ever told him.

Oh boo-farking-hoo. He just proved the Onion's article's point. Right wingers can't get enough of criticizing Obama. Now they go after a civilians who make fun of them? F. Uk(R)

It's only funny when you make fun of a DEMOCRAT President doing something a Republican President did but got mocked for and then laugh because it's paybacks, see how that works?

Sorry, no. I guess I favor reality.

PsiChick: ELKAY: I was reading the comments section below the article and found this gem.

Someday, Scooby-Doo shall run up and snatch off the PRETENDER'S mask, and we shall see that the so-called 'Obama' is really...

SHAGGY!

And he would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids!

/And I guess that commenter cheered on Dennis Miller when he promised to never criticize Bush. I don't think there's any comedian who's said of Obama: "I like him. I'm going to give him a pass. I take care of my friends."

That might be because conservative "humor" is about as sophisticated and nuanced as laughing at your own farts when you're the only person in the room.

lilbjorn: The bigger question is: Why is the right-wing incapable of humor?

Because the right wing never knows what the left wing is doing.

Miller doesn't know what he is. He certainly used to get lot of mileage out of attacking liberals, and some of it was pretty damn funny, but he seems to have disappeared in recent years, possibly because his political schtick has put him completely on the wrong side of history and he knows it.

Like most comedians in the 90s, he had no problem making fun of Clinton (and making fun of Republicans as well). But he lost credibility when he promised to never make fun of Bush.

My favorite Miller rant:

Let's cut to the chase. Clueless politicians compete for baseless votes cast by uninformed citizens for frightenly irrational reasons. Our moral standards are so low and our intellectual field so barren, that if John Wayne Gacy arose from the dead tomorrow, he could put on his clown suit, hire Roger Arows, and get enough name recognition votes in New Hampshire to knock Dick Lugar out of the race. And then Dick Lugar could drop his alias, re-enter the real world, and go back to his given name, Cock Barreta! ...

Hey, if you look hard enough, you're gonna find reason enough not to elect anyone. Bob Dornan is so insane, he actually undersells Crazy Eddy. Pat Buchanan? Okay, forget the fact that his chief aid keeps Hitler's missing testicle in his inside coat pocket. On his own, Buchanan is further to the right than a bicyclist on the Autobahn. (Pat Buchanan is a registered trademark of the National Rifle Association and cannot be used without direct express written consent.) ... Lamar Alexander is about a month and a half away from playing Norm to Jimmy Carter's Bob Villa. At least Alexander is insightful enough to realize that the current American electors are such a chronic droolers that they would vote for a farking shirt! Bob Dole? I don't know if I wanna president who is congratulated on his birthday by Willard Scott. And finally, how can I vote for Dick Lugar when he doesn't have the courage to use his real name, Schlong Uzi?!

That's a great example, actually. I think Jeff Dunham is funny. Larry the Cable Guy too. But while they might touch a political topic now and again, they don't spend all of their time whining and playing victim. They, you know, tell jokes.

It's a shame that Miller went from "Both sides are subject to criticism," to "Actually, just Democrats are subject to criticism."

An old rant:

"Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but as a comedian, with George W.
Bush coming into office, I feel like the owner of a hardware store before a
hurricane. I hate to see it coming but I have to admit it's good for business.

I'll take my shots at Dubya, but I actually have high hopes for the next four
years. I see George W. Bush working hard to keep the ambitions of big business
and the military in check, and ensure that even the lowest job pays a dignified
wage. I believe he'll erase the animus that has divided Washington, and bring
both sides of the aisle together. I also happen to believe dogs can talk if you
touch them in the right spot, and everyone watching me is happy with their
body.

As much as I'm willing to give Bush a chance, I'm a little nervous about his
intellectual capacity. I mean, at least Clinton had his dick to think with."

And then after 9/11, he vowed to give Bush a pass.

And they'd never stoop to things like racial stereotypes to make those jokes like some posters claim conservatives do, either.

Yeah, he's got some funny stuff, but the angry white man pops up frequently with thinly-veiled conservative/barnyard social analysis.
