A Dark Evil Omen: indylaw: I think that it's wrong to wish virulent dick cancer upon any human being, but Andrew Breitbart and his slavering cabal of petulant douchebags make me question my value system.

If wishing cancer on Andrew Breitbart is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Actually, no. Not cancer. I wish he and his ilk would see themselves for what they truly are, preferably with either a loaded handgun or a straight razor within easy reach.

Every bigot is a walking bulls-eye.

Including you, my friend. Everyone should have the right to marry, but if you don't think gay marriage is ripe comic material, you need a new funny bone.

dragonchild: CapnBlues: Still waiting for that very funny but not hateful gay marriage humor.

If I was to mock it, it'd be a sketch loosely following the outline of two grooms arguing over wedding details like decor theme until the planner kills herself by jumping out the window. Then they just go "fark it, marriage sucks", get drunk, fade to black. They wake up in a hotel bed in Vegas facing each other, wearing wedding bands. After a brief moment of nausea then catharsis and intimacy they sit up and notice two more guys asleep in the same bed (one to either side of them) wearing the same wedding bands.

Not sure if that's funny, but it is possible to make fun of anything. The problem with right-wing humor is that political comedy is basically empathy tainted with cynicism. The empathy's needed to give the cynicism something to react with. When your cynicism is shaped by social constructions (gays = bad) instead of something people can relate to (weddings = PITA), any attempt to interpret something as humorous is basically guesswork.

Ehhh, you're still treading into bigotry territory for that one. Now, anecdote != evidence, but not a single gay man I know is into interior design or crafts of any kind. Stereotypes are still bigoted, even if they are funny when driven to absurdity.

And the whole multiple-partner marriage thing...so we're saying they're gay mormons?

/too easy

This sketch from the show should explain why the show failed. I am in agreement with the intended sentiment of the sketch, yet I cannot deny that the sketch is not humourous due to a lack of subtlety and an extension of the intended joke for far longer than was necessary.

Kazrath: Are there any Conservative Republican comedians (That do political based humor) that are actually funny?

Therein lies the crux of the biscuit. It's all about what a particular person finds funny. A conservative is going to find different things funny than a liberal. And an independant gets to laugh at them both.

Kuroshin: And the whole multiple-partner marriage thing...so we're saying they're gay mormons?

No, just drunk idiots (which few would interpret as a statement of gays in general) -- I mean, Vegas for crissakes. They didn't make the mistake sober. I don't even know if gay marriage is legal there! But we all know it's possible to be offended by anything if you try hard enough.

No, I still havent made up a joke for you. I don't have one right now on marriage in general, either.
Is marriage in general a ripe topic for humor?
There seem to be many movies and tv shows that feel that way. Lots of jokes about failing marriages and couple not getting along. You know what? There are a lot of people going through real problems like that Do you think they think that kind of stuff is funny? Maybe it isn't!

Perhaps the next time some hateful bigot tells a "yo mama" joke you can iinform them of all the poor or obese parents out there who also don't find that kind of mysoginistic racism amusing either.

oh come on. that joke you sketched out -- it turned on two very distinct stereotypes about gay people. one is that they're all femmy and prissy, and two that they're promiscuous and have difficulty with monogamy. That's a joke that leans on stereotypes, and thus is mean-spirited and bordering on hateful.

The real question is why the right feels they should be entitled to fair representation from industries and media they regularly demonize.
I mean, if you're going to belittle their education, their profession, their product and whether it's even possible that they add value to society, does it make any damn sense to then complain that they don't fairly represent you or your views?

Awesome! Finally some comedy

2012-02-07 01:49:39 PM
CapnBlues: I heart that man. he's fantastic.

Yeah, but his life and stand-up are really kind of sad. I mean, we laugh at them, but they're sad.

And that's the thing about really good comedy, it's got a lot of tragedy in it. There's pathos. It requires that you feel something for somebody. You laugh because you recognize the tragedy, and you know it could happen to you, or it has happen to you. In other words, a fair degree of empathy is required. It's why Ron White is funnier than Larry the Cable Guy.
Because Ron's stories are kinda sad in a way.
Richard Pryor was funnier after he lit himself on fire, because his stories had some element of sadness. There was tragedy, and we can laugh at shared tragedy.
Many Jewish people make great comedians. Why? Because they see so much horror in everyday life. They see ridiculousness in social convention, and they have a vast history of getting shiat on to hone their understanding of how tragic life really can be. And that's VERY funny.

So the only person who could make fun of gay marriage is somebody that is IN a gay marriage. And they wouldn't be mocking the fact that they wanted to marriage and that was absurd. The comedy would come from a guy lamenting on stage that he only gets to suck one dick for the rest of his life. And it would be funny.

You can't mock a group you have power over, that's not comedy. It's the reason rich white men have to take it on the chin from everybody else when it comes to comedy. They have the most, they get to say the least. It's just how it works, and if they have a problem with it, they can go dry their tears on their big piles of money.

SKyRIm. They have their own religions that make just is much sense as Christianity, if not more. Now do you mean Christian themed games? Zero.

Skyrim is not a religious video game any more than World of Warcraft is; just having religions in-game does not a religious game make. Thing is, Christian mythology is a gold mine for material you could make amazing games out of, and some people have. The "problem", if you can call it that, is that if you place the game first it's no longer an effective didactic/brainwashing tool, any more than Okami converted people to Shinto.

Years ago I remember one of the Mortal combat variants having Kali as a playable character. Now mythology is a rich vien for video games to tap, but here was an actual goddess from a religion a few hundred million people still follow. Can you imagine the outcry if those game designers had also included, say, Jesus as a PC and say give him a finishing move that involved nailing his opponent to a cross?

This may be relevant to your interests.
