"In removing the boys, the city contended Ms. Ogunbayo was mentally unstable..."

www.bloodygoodhorror.com

"...the youngsters had "near-perfect" attendance in school and "were doing well, even thriving, academically," while in their mother's care, the appellate division said. In addition, the boys were up to date on their medical examinations and vaccinations, and their heights and weights were appropriate for their ages, said the court."

I'm not sure if that's really $900 trillion in damages, but bad call on the part of DSS.

I guess she figured that asking for a cool quadrillion would make the lawsuit seem silly.

First thing I thought when I saw the headline was that Curtis must have gotten slapped again.

OMG, the older one is getting older faster than the younger one.

Doesn't really matter, unless social services can show that she was an actual danger to the kids, which it hasn't. She might have a really good case for at least some compensation (but obviously not 9x1014 bucks).

As a foster parent, I recognize that DSS has to have the power to do what they do sometimes, but I've seen that power abused myself, and it scares me what they can do if they really don't like you.

Ms. Ogunbayo, who is representing herself, has branded the allegations a 'huge lie.' "

Tough case. It's difficult to obtain money from an entity that doesn't exist.

Representing herself is a baaaaaad idea. IMO she does have a case. As long as the children were healthy/cared for, "crazier than a box o rocks" should not have been enough to pull them. Her leaving them alone long term is sketchy as a reason (12 is on the edge of acceptable, so it would be a judgement call) but step one should have been to assist her in accessing child care, NOT pulling the kids. Hell, hiring a nanny for the family would be cheaper than placing two children in foster care long term. Never mind the cost of this court case.

No, she doesn't need 900 trillion. But she should be compensated. And be given her kids back, unless there is a concrete safety issue.

Well, a 900 trillion dollar lawsuit should prove the city wrong...

"and also left the boys at home alone for extended periods while she was working, the city maintained."

*looks at kids' ages*

So, latch key kids are a bad thing? Don't know how I ever made it into adult hood then!

If you can't leave a 10 and 12 year old home alone while you're working, you're doing it wrong.

If her reward is even a fraction of what she wants New York will be brought to it's knees.

In one, she allegedly told a doctor her children's skin was becoming darker each day, due to radiation. In another incident, she wrote her children's school that the FBI and Secret Service were out to get the boys, ACS said in court papers.

Ms. Ogunbayo insisted she was mentally stable, and the children were removed because she refused to seek "necessary treatment for her mental health issues," the agency contended.

This is a hard one. One the one hand, she's coo-coo for cocoa puffs, on the other, the kids were alright.

From a selfish side, my mother often had to leave my sister and I home alone so she could support us, so the seven-hour thing isn't really a problem I have.

From an outsider's side, she's probably a nutcase, and their physical health and scholarly achievements might not show other psychological issues that they may be living with that isn't visible on the by-the-numbers surface. After all, being "well-educated and fit" doesn't necessarily mean "mentally stable."

That's great. World GDP is only $63 trillion, so countless generations will be paying off this debt.

Thanks, New York.

If I understood the article correctly, the appellate court ruled that DDS had to return the kids. DDS ignored that instruction. If their appeal fails, she absolutely deserves compensation, and a lot of it.

... Just not 900 trillion. (Which is more money than exists in the world, IIRC, fifteen or so times over.)

My cursory research says that in most states, 11 years old is the rule. I'm fairly sure I was left home during the day for 4 to 5 hours as a time at 12 years old. I remember being told in school how to handle being home alone in 3rd or 4th grade.

I don't think I'd want a 10 and 12 year old home alone for extended periods, but yeah, it would be a judgement call and social services should definitely NOT be involved for that reason alone.
