Packers: They have to do a better job on the defensive side of the ball in 2012. There was a major regress by a lot of defensive players in 2011.

Ok, statistically they were the worse defense in NFL history. There is no where to go but up (or stay worse, whatever). I say fire everyone on the defense and start over. Coaches and most players. The secondary was a joke; 3rd and over 10? no biggie, they'll give up the big play.

Maybe keep the d-line. maybe.

Bad drafting is starting to catch up with this team. It's time to fix that. And one has to ask: Has Tom Brady lost his postseason magic?

You mean bad drafting, like picking two Tight Ends in the same draft? How did that one work out?

And here I thought they had been doing pretty good grabbing things off the scrap heap. It's not like they've had the opportunity for a bunch of top 10 busts...

Plus, don't they have 4 picks in the first two rounds this year? I'm thinking they'll be fine.

2012-02-07 10:00:48 AM
Lions 11? Sweet I guess. Aside from Avril they need to try and keep Tulloch. Plus getting Calvin an extension before the season starts. They need some secondary help out of the draft and maybe some offensive linemen in the second round assuming Backus and Raiola have another year or two left in them.

Can't argue too much over the rankings. I think the Patriots drafting concerns were on the defensive side of the ball.

He will be in Miami if he goes anywhere. No way is he going to want to play for that asshole coach the Jets have.

Jets shouldn't even be in the top 20.

Packers got knocked out of the playoffs the second Eli let out that wounded-duck last second hail mary to end the second half. Geee, a few seconds left on the clock, end of first half, not within FG range, YA THINK THEY'LL GO FOR THE HAIL MARY? It was mind-numbingly stupid. I watched that game at a sports bar where lots of expats gather to see the football, the table next to us was a bunch of packers fans. The facepalm faces they had were so sad... while the other tables full of hooting giants fans LOLed their asses off.

The Eagles' big splash last year didn't pay any dividends. Now they have to regroup and try and get back to playoff football. If not, Andy Reid could be gone after the 2012 season.

It's going to be another pile of mediocrity. The Chargers gonna keep Norvin' it up for another year. I'm skeptical of the Raiders house cleaning taking any kind of immediate effect, Broncos are still playing a TE at QB, and who the f knows what the Chiefs are going to do or not do.

8 or 9 wins takes the division......again....

He ain't going anywhere. As long as the Linc is filled for every game and the Eagles make or get close to the postseason every year then Reid will remain the head coach. The Eagles don't want a championship, they want to make money.

The entire offseason will be devoted to making Tim Tebow a better passer. Good luck with that.

I thought snark of that level wasn't allowed in unbiased ranking charts.

Eagles fans should be careful what they wish for when kicking out a coach for not doing well enough in the playoffs. Just ask San Diego.

Eagles fans are correct that Reid needs to go just like Chargers fans were correct about Marty Schottenheimer. The problem for the Chargers is that they hired a guy was a known quantity and not good enough either. If the Eagles fired Reid only to hire Wade Phillips that would be the same concept. But unlike the Chargers of 2007 the Eagles need to completely rebuild and Reid isn't the guy for that job.

For the most part the personnel were the same as 2010, when they had one of the league's top defenses. They lost Collins early, which was huge in the secondary, and Jenkins up front. Jenkins demanded a lot of double teams, which freed up blitzers (usually Mathews) to make plays. They didn't have anyone viable to replace either guy IMHO...Peprah and Burnett just aren't Nick Collins type playmakers, and no one jumped out at the DE positon to replace Jenkins.

Make a couple good picks in the draft and the D improves pretty quick. Woodson is aging and slowing down (noticeably at times), so they'll likely move him to safety if Collins can't come back, that way he can roam and make plays and not deal with 1 on 1 too often.

2012-02-07 10:52:47 AM
And I see they're still pushing the myth that the Ravens are getting old on defense.

Admittedly the window of opportunity is closing for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, but other than that, the team is getting younger on both sides of the ball. And with Ed Reed, it's less about age and more about mounting injuries.

Totally off topic

The NFL trophy presentation dealie is horribly awful. Let's compare it to the NHL.

NHL:

Players go nuts, eventually line up for the hand shake, go nuts.. trophy makes an entrance.. crowd goes nuts.. commish says something stupid.. awards trophy to captain of the team who goes totally nuts, and then they pass the trophy around the team.

NFL:

Players go nuts, 1,000 press people run onto the field, some brief handshake of coaches.. commercial. Stupid weird stage is set up, awkward old guy slowing walks trophy through a group of players who kinda touch it. Trophy goes up on stage. commish says something stupid.. trophy is awarded to the owner who is quickly interviewed by Dan Patrick.. MVP comes up and is quickly interviewed by Dan Patrick. Rest of the team is nowhere to be seen and never seem to really get the trophy.

awful.

I can't remember who the interviewee was, but I think it was Dan Patrick talking to a player who had lost in the Super Bowl about his most vivid memories about it, and the player said it was categorically how quickly the losers are swept off the field to make room for the stage and ceremony. Barely had time to pout or recover from shock of losing before you're being ushered into the locker room.

Come to think of it, it may have been Welker talking about '07....

My biggest gripes are:

1) Why award the trophy to the owner? Give it to the players. Who gives a crap about the owner?
2) Why interview people immediatly? Let them celebrate naturally and hold the trophy.. and then interview them.

Rub this on twice a day and call someone who gives a shiat in the morning

On the Giants, they probably won't repeat. Outside of 2008, they always crash after winning the Super Bowl. But this is the strongest Giants team to win since 1986 (1990 was great, but once Simms got hurt it was a cluster of back and forth on who should be QB). They can even afford to lose Manningham and Osi if they have to. They have Prince and Austin coming off injuries, their #1 and 2 draft picks. Just get a running back or hope Bradshaw heals, get a TE and get some offensive line help. The Eagles will be tough this year, the Cowboys will be the Cowboys again.

49'ers, Smith had a fluke season, Saints will be tough, Eli will dismantle the Pack's D again.

Yeah, given that the Broncos are playing a first place schedule and everyone know has plenty of tape on Timmah the standings could end up a reversal of this year. I'm even thinking of putting $10 on KC's SB odds although 50/1 (and 23/1 to win the AFC) on a team with Romeo Crennel in charge that hasn't won a playoff game since the Northridge earthquake makes me nervous.

right....just so happens that it all happened while playing the giants? and not to mention then the pats blowing the game at the right time and letting the giants win that too. no youre right. no credit to the giants at all. it was everybodies elses fault for letting them win the superb owl.

The punt returner was filling in for an injured player and wasn't the regular return guy. Anyway, don't be mad. The Super Bowl doesn't determine the best team, just the champion.

Really? You didn't come across as "not bitter". Sorry.

Well, the Giants/Pats was my least favorite of each from both conferences. Game was okay, but not great.

If it was catching up with them why did they go deeper into the playoffs this year than they did the two previous years?

The NHL is the only one of the big 4 that presents the Championship trophy to the players. The others (MLB/NBA/NFL) give it to the owners.

Pre-draft, pre-free agency power rankings. Give me a break.

2012-02-07 11:36:31 AM
Where Mario Williams ends up could be a major factor in next year's final results. I can see him having a Reggie White type effect in Green Bay (no idea what their cap situation is, but almost none of their defensive players are worth keeping, so I'm sure they could find the space). Could also make a huge difference for the Pats.

I have visions of him coming to my 49ers and helping to form the best defense in the history of everything, but it won't work out logistically. Have to resign Carlos Rogers, two new safeties, a new right guard, two receivers, and depth for the O and D lines. Some of that will come through the draft (especially at receiver), but there are just too other positions that need shoring up first before you get to the OLB position. But still, it's fun to dream...

2012-02-07 11:45:54 AM
Well, whaddaya know? Another football "pundit" who thinks the only question about the Browns is Colt McCoy. Clearly this putz only heard stories about the Browns' ineptitude this year, 'cuz it's also clear that he didn't actually watch any Browns games this year.

Colt McCoy isn't even in the top 10 of the Browns' problems right now...and the fact that there are more than 10 shows you how asinine it is that everyone keeps harping on McCoy.

Even some of the dumbasses are still downing them. One moron on the NFLnetwork (I'd say the black guy, but it doesn't narrow it down) claimed the Giants only win when they're under pressure? Like they can turn Super Bowl runs on and off like a switch. I'll take average seasons and 2 Super Bowl titles in 4 years over teams like the Chargers or the Falcons, that have 12-4 or 13-3 seasons and have shiat to show for it. Hell, 14 NFL fan bases don't even know how it feels to win even once.

2012-02-07 11:48:49 AM
Wow, they put the Bengals in the Top 10 again. They greatly over estimate the team every year exclaiming 'This is the year' or some such nonsense and throwing in it's a young team or whatever. It's always a young team because Mike Brown won't pay for veterans and is on the record stating the player's best years are in the first 5 years, after that, he dumps them.

One year they'll actually have the Bengals in the top 10 and they'll perform really well to stay there and the talking heads will tout themselves as geniuses for it. Even though EVERY year they predict the Bengals will be good. The Bengals will be good when Mike Brown dies and Katie takes over the team.
