A damn shame. In my opinion they were the best. But you can't blame them for getting cold feet. The spotlight has been on them and, after seeing what happened with Megaupload, they got out before they were caught out.

Ooooh, better watch out, Anonymous is gonna shutdown somebody's website for a couple minutes if we're not careful.

HotWingConspiracy: So have we managed to outlaw a technology/business model?

Yep.

No matter that the technology is analogous to our highway system.
But, you know... thieves use roads. Imagine how wonderful our society would be if we start applying this surge of persecution to our roads and highways. Assume every car is carrying contraband, assume every home harbors stolen goods, and assume every driver is guilty until they settle out of court to get their license back.

Further, start closing down sections of the highway that have been used for criminal activity (driving from the scene of the crime), even though that usage may amount to .00XX% of the total utilization.

Don't forget the gas stations that serve those thieving motorist, better close them down too.

Fortunately, we have the MPAA and RIAA to police our inter-tubes, otherwise entertainment would cease to exist as we know it.

"BTJunkie was not known to be the target of a similar investigation"
"Its anonymous operator"
"We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on..."
"This is the end of the line my friends," it says. "The decision has not come easy, but we've decided to voluntarily shut down."

After careful analysis of tfa and eveything mr. anonymous had to say about his decision, I belive I can say with a fair amount of accuracy that he is a great big coward who concern for a free internet does not extend beyond his bank account.

Now there may be unseen circumstances such as death threats from mpaa supporters or name calling and other harsh language directed at him/her but until such serious threats are brought to light, I'm stickin' with yellow bellied, low down, snake in the grass coward.
Isohunt is a much better site, anyway, and run by a nice Canadian boy. Also, not sure if allowed to do this but since there is no money involved, anyone need a demonoid invite? Send me a p.m.

Well, the way you're bashing someone for covering their ass to not go to prison for years on end and spend the rest of their life handing over every cent they earn, how about you start up your own torrent site? I mean, a hardcore, Chuck Norris loving, biatch-slapping, angry patriot like yourself should have no problem risking years in prison, amiright? If you don't want to get a C&D, don't engage in behavior that generally is rewarded with a C&D letter. Is this the part where we jump on your ass and cite no less than FOUR separate recent surveys that show that content downloaders own more legal copyrighted material purchases on average than non-downloaders? Or maybe you'd like to hear it from a copyright holder himself. (new window) Be sure to see the other non-anecdotal links for proof that copyright violators aren't thieves, they're just "Try it before you buy it" people in a post brick-&-mortar store world.

The fact that the only thing you could think of was Linux distros shows that torrents are only good for sharing movies and music. Maybe the user-as-host concept could improve sites like youtube and netflix.

No, people are lazy and don't like artificial delays/ blackouts. Same day digital distribution would be a win-win for everyone. The business model is well established, Steam and Itunes rake in money. Have sales, specials, bundles, etc.

The amount of unauthorized copyrighted content on Youtube probably outweighs bittorrent traffic.

I might be ok with sharing my bandwidth with Netflix, but not for free. Also, wait until the MPAA finds out that all Netflix users are also distributors of their content...

My DVD/Blu-Ray library runs to nearly 2,000 titles (and that's just average for serious cinephiles), and I have HD cable at home. I definitely pay for what I watch.

What I won't pay for is content that has been bastardized and censored for the US audience.

And to InmanRoshi, TV shows on BBC One are paid for by the British taxpayer and do not depend on revenue from commercials. BBC America does not get funding from the UK government, so it does depend on income from advertising, but as I said, I don't watch their broadcast anyway, so the point is moot.

Nah, I enjoy not having to turn my TV down every couple minutes, I also enjoy not having to worry about schedules or channels. What is also awesome, is not having to have an internet connection or disks to play a computer game, I can just simulate a CD drive and mount an ISO on it. Or I can put a file on an external hard drive and play it on my Wii without having to worry about damaging my game disks.

Umm the current "perfectly viable commercial model" is damn near draconian. When your "wheel" is cracked, lopsided, and has a broken axis, maybe you do need to look at creating a new one instead of trying to force everyone to have a shiatty ride.

You are missing the point. Many of the people that use torrents do so in order to find out if the product is worth the money. Do you buy a car before you test drive it? I for one find that if a movie is so bad I wouldn't pay for it then I won't even watch the copy I dl'd. If it is even mediocre then I'm off to best buy to add it to my huge collection.

I see movies and books in hard copy form almost as a form of currency. The bigger my collection, the richer I feel, and I reread novels many times whether to revisit a wonderful place, or because I usually find new things each time. That is what most true artists want in compensation. Just enough money to live comfortably while they continue to create, and knowing that what they create makes the rest of us feel. Capitalism is the death of expression through art.

If you are a UK resident who pays for a television license (which is how the BBC is funded), then you can complain that I piggyback on content you pay for.

I also watch Downton Abbey on PBS. I've never contributed to PBS--am I stealing content?
