it's just a spring clean for the may queen

I used to work in an office where I, as a non-smoker, got a 10-minute break every morning and afternoon. The smokers basically got unlimited breaks to go outside and smoke.

Still pisses me off.

SO if that article is right, if you smoke you shouldn't bother quitting because the damage has been done?

We get it, smoking is bad. Now shouldn't we be using that money to find out something we don't know?

\still no cure for...

Evidently not. There are still a great many people who smoke.

Keep puffing away - that's not what the article said at all.

Publish an article about a study. State certain conclusions generated from study. Last sentence of the article claim "No clear conclusions".

Excellent read!

Jim: I'm just saying that you can't be sure that is wasn't you.
Dwight: That's ridiculous, of course it wasn't me.
Jim: Marijuana is a memory loss drug, so maybe you just don't remember.
Dwight: I would remember.
Jim: Well, how could you, if it just erased your memory?
Dwight: That's not how it works.
Jim: Now how do you know how it works?
Dwight: Knock it off, okay, I'm interviewing you.
Jim: No! You said that I'd be conducting the interview when I walked in here. Now exactly how much pot did you smoke?

FTFA: Among men who stopped smoking 10 years before assessment, their risk for cognitive decline was similar to the risk associated with nonsmokers. However, men who stopped smoking within 10 years before assessment, their risks for cognitive decline was more similar to current smokers' risk.

You're right, I read that wrong.

They are assuming a lot. Like I have 10 years left to recover.

I quit smoking 5 months ago after 15 years. I still get up every 2 hours or so and go outside for a minute, it's just part of my work routine at this point. I don't think my co-workers care. After all, they are at perfect liberty to do the same thing if they want to.

derp is as derp does

FTA: No clear conclusions about the mechanism can be determined from this study.

So, quit drawing conclusions.

I must be smoking too much, because this looks like crap to me.

"Male smokers and male nonsmokers should clear differences in risk for rapid cognitive decline. Contrary, female smokers and female nonsmokers did not reveal a clear difference in risk for dementia."

Am I the only person who read the headline and before I RTFA, I was imagining a bunch of guards at a reactor in Iran? One goes out to smoke, the rest hear a rustling, go outside to check, and see nothing but scuff marks and a large cardboard box.

"Huh? What was that? . . . Just a box . . ."

Sure we are. Nothing says, "Hey, there's a productive worker!" than stopping what you are doing to go outside and do nothing. At least when the boss sees a smoker out there they still think, "Well, that's understandable; we can't very well have them smoke inside."

Flawed perceptions are still perceptions.

Everyone knows damn well that smoking is bad for your health. They know it because they're constantly being reminded of it by everyone around them that doesn't smoke. People still smoke mostly because it's very addictive, although there are a few that do it because they like it and just don't give a fark about the impact to their health.

/ for the record I've never smoked a cigarette in my life

Pretty much this, I eat right, hardly ever drink, get lots of exercise and generally take care of myself. My lifestyle is healthier than the douchebags who will tell me how bad a person I am because I smoke with a mouth full of McDonalds.

I think it was about three months ago, when I read that "researchers" had determined that smokers scored higher on cognitive skills tests. All of these findings are crap. Smoking is not good for you, but it really isn't as bad as we're told.
