John Pinnette's impression of a Chinese buffet owner wasn't offensive, it was funny. Pete Hoekstra's ad, on the other hand, was not funny. It was just cringeworthy.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of the Yellow Menace, couldn't they bring out a better Yellow Menace? Like one of these guys?

I like how it's so offensive that he gets away with the childish act of changing his opponent's last name as an attack. Seriously, this is an actual candidate?

Up further reflection, is the ad implying that the federal government is spending money directly in China? Shouldn't that blame be placed on the shoulders of China's biggest trading partner, Wal-Mart, and Wal-Mart's customers?

if you look at the source on the page (on his official page) the video is named "yellowgirl"

honestly if they were going to do a caricature of a Chinese person, why didn't they find one who didn't have an obvious american accent, and could speak English just fine?

rjakobi: There are plenty of Asians in Michigan, I wager?

More than most people would think, especially in SE Michigan. Enough to swing an election alone? Probably not. But are there enough decent human beings of other races who will also be offended by this? I would think so. This dog-whistle (actually, it's so over that it's more of a regular whistle) will play pretty well in some of the really rural and backward areas, especially "the Thumb." But those places are sparsely populated, and I'm guessing that he has just offended enough people who hail from civilized parts of the state to probably give Stabenow another term.

Besides, Hoekstra wasn't terribly popular as a Rep. anyway, so it's not like he had a great popularity cushion.

So a stereotypical poor farm girl in a rice field somehow knows broken English, the global trade situation, US politics down to the State level, and is crediting us for adding jobs...growing rice?

I'm trying really hard here to take this at face value, rather than a bigoted, xenophobic screed. On the surface, this doesn't make any sense at all. They should have used a wealthy businessman wearing a nice suit, sitting in his high-rise condo, speaking fluent English. Or hell, even a low factory worker on the production line, speaking Mandarin (w/subtitles).

But nope. Racist xenophobia is the message I'm left with if I dig any deeper than the facade. China's industrial growth is based on retail products. No government spends a whole hell of a lot of money on such things. Bonds are merely investment vehicles. Joe Consumer, along with Big Business are the reasons behind China's growth (although their economy is due for a bust soon, due to internal issues).

Scared of China? Buy American. You can't vote China's trade imbalance away. Take a real stand, stop buying iProducts, don't shop at big retail chains, and support your local businesses.

It doesn't really matter, the connotation is there and you know they know it. They just chose to ignore it. That or they are inept, and as such not really fit for the office sought.

rjakobi: There are plenty of Asians in Michigan, I wager?

There's been a long history of anti-Asian racism in Michigan, especially due to Japanese car manufacturing competition. In 1982, a bunch of Chrysler employees found a Chinese guy and beat him to death because they thought he was Japanese.

And the worst part of it? The guys who murdered Vincent Chin got away with it.

i know. What it is it with Conservatives and these tedious, barely understandable, knicknames?

It's nothing more than the product of very small and very useless minds, and yet they have no fear of broadcasting their stupidity. I mean, seriously? Debbie Spenditnow?

Is that even necessary?

Would this retard's ad have worked better without it?

Conservatives' adherence to this level of petty name-calling tells me all I need to know about their intellectual capacity, and it's sad that a large chunk of this nation finds these small minds worth listening to.

Look, Hoekstra's ad is insensitive and race-baiting, and also it's just flat-out poorly made. It appeals to intellect of about 5th grade level, tops. There's no reason to insult a third-tier hack by comparing him to a complete retard like Hoekstra.

I think it would have been a much more effective ad if they had had the actress speak her lines in Mandarin and run subtitles along the bottom of the screen. Then they could have closed with the girl saying "Thank you Debbie Spenditnow!" in classic broken Engrish.

Of course, that would have required the target audience for this message to have the ability to read...an assumption I'm sure they weren't willing to make.

FWIW - the actress kind of gave me a tingley-pants feeling too.

Remember on Seinfeld when Tim Watley (Bryan Cranston) converted to Judaism so that he could tell Jew jokes? And Jerry was talking to some priest or something, and the priest says "this offends you as Jew?" and Jerry says "It offends me as a comedian!"

I feel like there's a joke of that sort in this. Hoekstra is using a horrible racial stereotype in order to score a cheap political points. "And you're offended as a non-bigot?" "I'm offended as a politics enthusiast!"

Or something like that? Is anyone better with jokes of that sort? Cause I'm not Asian, nor am I an actor or a political activist or whatever. Dunno. Just sayin, there's a good joke in here for someone to tell. I just know it. :)

I'm not defending the ad, I just don't think the class name of an embedded video, buried where most people would never see it, was chosen as a racial slur. If the ad is overtly racist what would be the point?

But I've been wrong before.

We're working past that though. Thailand and China have become massive export markets for American vehicle (we're on track to sell more vehicles in China than America). The anger directed at the Japanese was centered around the fact they engaged in protectionism and what were seen as unfair practices.

Now all the big Asian manufacturers have plants, technical centers, and testing facilities in Michigan. Entire factory lines produce parts or vehicles that head straight for China. I ended up taking a trip over to a West Michigan plant last night and one of the break room conversations was how Hoekstra was gonna fark up our ability to sell in China and that would get the plant closed.

I think this hurts him more than it helps. The Tea Party was voting for the R guy anyway. The issue is more areas like Oakland County (where all the auto engineers live this days). Our universal reaction was "Oh hell no, you do not fark with our second most important market."

/also Chinese cars are pieces of shiat and we have least 15 years before they are a threat to the North American market

Oh, I know. Most of them are seriously cheaply built. I've ridden in plenty of them in China. That said, there are also Chinese cars that were just amazing to ride in. My uncle has an Audi A6L, which is a variant only available in and also built in China. That car is amazing. Ahh, remember when Republicans and conservatives used to hail Asians as the "good ones" out of all the minority groups and cynically used socioeconomic stats as an excuse to criticize blacks and Hispanics and claim that their problems were their own faults?

Looks like the "Big Tent" party has now shrunk too small to include Asians in it as well.

As somebody mentioned, she looks southern Californian to me, except for the straw hat. Nobody wears white capri pants and American Eagle shirts if they're in a rice paddy in Asian. You know why? Guess what's used to fertilize rice paddies.
