They better hurry up and get farked. I'm tired of seeing the headline "Stock Futures Lower on Fears Over Greek Bailout" every damn day when I check my portfolio. I know it'll keep going down no matter what, but they could at least change it up a little.

So long as the contagion doesn't spread to Spain, Italy or Portugal I'll be content that the situation isn't as bad as it could be.

They should have defaulted months ago. They should have defaulted weeks ago, and they should have defaulted yesterday. Today is also good. The longer they drag this out, the worse it is going to be on everyone. Just eat the shiat sandwich and get back to doing what you do best: attracting tourists and avoiding taxes.

I'm amazed that their politicians think they have a chance in hell of avoiding default at this point.

FTFA:
Austerity was supposed to bring down debt levels in Greece, as well as Portugal and Ireland, to sustainable levels but instead they've increased in all three countries. Greece's debt level is especially troubling: it rose to 159.1% of gross domestic product, according to Eurostat, the EU's statistical agency. That makes the IMF's goal of reducing Athens' debt to 120% of GDP by 2020 seem out of reach, analysts say. It is almost like Herakles and the hydra: lop one problem off and more grow in its place.

But hey, you go on telling us how that's a good financial plan.

Austerity was supposed to pull them out of this. Did you even bother to read that the article is about choosing to continue the austerity programs which do NOT seem to be working?

No, you likely didn't. Or if you did, all you saw was "austerity was supposed to bring down debt levels" and ignored the fact that the EXACT OPPOSITE happened.

Greece is screwed no matter what they do, but both sides seem to be ignoring it.

They do more cutting: the economy falls further into recession, making it harder to pay the bills. Austerity sucks

They don't do more cutting: they don't get any more money from abroad, and immediately default on their debt. They no longer necessarily have to pay interest on the outstanding bonds, but they still can't pay the bills, because even if their debt was placed at zero, expenditures are greater than revenue. They still have to cut - since only a moron would lend to them - but they don't get the nice foreign boogeyman to blame. Not doing austerity sucks.

No matter what, there will be future pain coming to the people of Greece, because they are economically living beyond their means today. There *will* be cuts, the only question is how severe they will be and where they will fall.

Kinda like certain other nations, and while the US doesn't face the same constraints the Greeks face, we also don't have economies much larger than our own to go to for help when the bill comes due.

Why was the drastic measure of "austerity" needed in the first place?

To prolong and push back what is happening now?

That this was inevitable because of the welfare state Greece sank in to?

I dont know how someone can be this dense.

stratagos: No matter what, there will be future pain coming to the people of Greece, because they are economically living beyond their means today.

The only reason they are living beyond their means is they can't devalue their currency.

FTA: Tuesday, including a controversial reduction in the minimum wage, in exchange for about $171 billion in new bailout loans

How will reducing the minimum wage save the government money? Wouldn't lowering income reduce tax receipts? Lowering the minimum wage would also reduce consumption which will cause the economy to contract.

Their main problem is they have the tax collection infrastructure of a third world country. Most of their economy does not report their profits to the government. They can do all the austerity they want, but its only affecting the people that pay taxes, which is probably far less than 50%.

*dons flame retardant suit*

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the politicians need to buckle down, vote for what will improve the country in the long run, and just deal with the backlash of anger. So what if they get voted out? They are elected to make the choices for the good of their constituency. Said constituency may not know what is actually good for themselves, in the long run, and will probably vote the elected officials out, but the masses will reap the benefits in the long run.

Greece is currently the mob(not the criminal one, the other definition of mob). Businesses not being able to pay workers isn't austerity, it is a sign that those businesses shouldn't survive, whatever the consequences may be, because those in charge made poor decisions about the future of the business at some point in the past. Scale that scenario up a few times, and you have the issues Greece is facing. Early retirement(52 years old, I think it was) with benefits for the rest of your life, highly paid government employees who don't actually do anything(I've heard this before, somewhere ...), and a government that pandered to the voters every election, and was as corrupt as they came. The dominoes started to tumble down, and everyone who saw the facts coming got the fark out. Now the politicians and the people who voted for them are left with the cake they made. It is rotten and tastes like shiat, but they were responsible for the ingredients, now they have to eat their cake that they made

Actually, that's looking to be the case, yes.

Ever hear the phrase: you have to spend money to make money? Used to be common sense. Now it's more "spend as little as possible and be shocked when you don't make anything."

I'm just...what? Devaluing currency is, by far, the best economic policy small economies in a downturn could possibly engage in.
