It's a race to be the runner up in the general election.

If Newt doesn't win, the GOP has no chance in November.

I'm no Gingrich fan, but can we pick a different joke? That shiat is so played out.

And if Newt does win, the GOP is sure to take the Presid-Bwaaahahahhahahaaa.

Sorry, I couldn't finish that with a straight face.

Do you honestly think Gingrich has a chance outside of the morons who are gullible enough to buy his shiat?

It would be all kinds of awesome if Santorum took Romney from behind. No one saw it coming.

Lost Thought 00: It would be all kinds of awesome if Santorum took Romney from behind. No one saw it coming.

Except possibly his kids, what with their lifelong experience with The Santorumnator.

I've seen one sign for a GOP candidate and that was for Ron Paul. So obviously he takes home Minnesota.

/its all the in depth analys I can muster for the GOP Caucus in my home state
//still better than most polling that is being done now

It's over. Romney can go on autoderp until June.

I still think it is hilarious. Mainly because Gingrich is such a complete and total dick.

Wow, Minnesotans love their Santorum, don't they?

Actually, this is the first primary in a while where it will be interesting and relevant to see what happens.

It just dawned on me that no matter who wins, I'll still be disappointed in a great number of my fellow Minnesotans. I guess I'd rather they derp in the direction of money than fanatical religion, though...

I love this Santorum/Gingrich back and forth. It's like each time one starts winning and gets listened to by the "elite media" (TM) all the anti-Romney folks realize Santorum/Gingrich is bat-shiat crazy/an a-hole and then votes for the other guy in the next primary, thus repeating the cycle.

2012-02-07 09:28:43 AM
I don't know if it's an open primary but if it is I'm voting Paul or Gingrich. Because Romney can suck my balls.

Not registered republican though. So if it's closed then I will just complain on the internet. Then I get to tell myself I am making change happen.

Romney isn't a religious fantatic? He is. I can't think of one social conservative view he doesn't share with Santorum.

Fanatic is a spectrum disorder. Romney strikes me as much more of a panderer. I don't know how much he really adheres to the views he says he holds. Santorum? He's full-blown religious crazy.

Today's roundup

Sheesh, this was greened early.

Up for Grabs:
- Minnesota and Colorado caucuses, Missouri non-binding primary. These are precinct caucuses where voters will select delegates to the next tier in their state's delegate awarding process, which is where everything will get really interesting. So, today's results are all non-binding but will give an interesting snapshot of preferences at the state level, and of how each candidate's ground operation is performing. Nuts and bolts on the caucus formats at The Green Papers.
- PPP's polling shows this is likely to be a very good day for Rick Santorum. He can potentially win Missouri and Minnesota and come second to Romney in Colorado. Why is Santorum doing so well in the Midwest? Three possibilities: 1) Nobody has bothered to attack him until literally yesterday, 2) He seems "likable" (if you don't listen to the words coming out of his mouth), 3) Evangelicals and tea partiers may be coalescing around him as an alternative to Gingrich. Missouri will be an interesting indicator of whether Santorum is uniting the religious right - Mike Huckabee finished second (to McCain) there in 2008.
- 538 speculated on Sunday on what the Republican race will look like if it becomes a Romney-Santorum contest. I think they underplay the influence of attack ads once Romney starts treating Santorum like a real opponent. Romney's campaign started attacks on Santorum yesterday.
- But, but, the general election? Yesterday's WashPost/ABC poll found that Obama leads all the candidates, but Romney performs best. More polls at RCP
- For comparison purposes for tonight, 2008's results in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri

Where are the candidates?
Mitt Romney - hitting up Johnstown CO at 9 AM before a primary night rally in Denver
Rick Santorum - in Colorado, Blaine MN, on John King's show at 6 EST, and holding his primary party in St. Charles, MO
Newt Gingrich - holding events in Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus, Ohio.
Ron Paul - also on John King's show at 6 EST, visiting schools in Coon Rapids and Maple Grove MN in the early evening, and holding a caucus party in Golden Valley, MN

Hey it's an open caucus. You could vote Gingrich for the lulz, I mean, er, you could be a part of this wonderful political system we call Democracy and make informed and rational choices, as is ideal.

I didn't realize we had an open caucus. Too bad I haven't registered in Minnesota yet, otherwise I'd go and see how many Santorum double-entendres I could drop.

bobbette: Sheesh, this was greened early.

Tell me about it. Now that polls are about to close in Missouri, this thread is half way down the page and completely dead.

This could end up being a *very* good week for Santorum. Polls tend to slightly underestimate just how well he can do in Caucuses, as Iowa showed. But only political geeks realise that he's poised for two wins and a 2nd tonight, so he'll get a ton of coverage with his "surprise" upsets. And in the last few national polls, he's at 18% and rising, while Gingrich is in the mid-low 20s and falling.

Only 3 or 4 more points would put him in national second if he steals them off Gingrich, while 5-10 (which is a very plausible surge following a night of upsets) would make him a credible threat. The Romney campaign seems to have only realised this yesterday.
