I do not have a problem with this, but I bet the assignment editor at WTAE was hoping the reporter would get a juicy quote from a wingnut about how this is the devil's work. Why, they would have gotten dozens of comments and hundreds of page views!

The university does not profit from the sales. It pays $25 for one dose and that's exactly what the student has to pay.

I hope the machine accepts bills, otherwise that's a lot of change to be carrying around.

I only worry that the kids are taking something which they may have a serious reaction to. It would be nice to expect that such a morning after pill is safe and relatively trouble-free, but with something releasing that amount of hormones into the body, it seems like a big risk.

Condoms are a much cheaper form of contraception, and abstinence even cheaper. Both come with much fewer side effects and risks.

"Plan B" isn't just a clever name, you know. It's not meant to be a primary form of contraception.

they should sell and give out condoms to anyone who wants them, anywhere, anytime. people probably should consult a doctor before taking plan B.

I know too many guys who rely on the girl being on some sort of contraceptive.

Furthermore, I know to many asshats who couldn't be farked checking themselves for an STI.

I guarantee you the frat boy who couldn't find four quarters for the condom machine will easily be able to scrape together 2500 pennies for this one.

Wonder how the machine checks the purchaser's ID to make sure they're 17 or older. Plan B is still prescription-only for the 16-and-under crowd.

While there aren't likely to be too many 16 year olds running around and farking on a college campus, it's still required by federal law.

Probably works out like cigarette machines in bars, placed in an area that reasonably only 18+ can enter. I don't agree with this though it's only going to hurt pharmacists like yourself and the coat hanger industry.

Also, it might be that the machine works only by swiping the student's ID card. A lot of college campuses have a similar setup now. You carry a balance of "flex money" and you can swipe your card at vending machines, the laundry room, etc. This might be similar.

at $25 a throw, daddy's little princess should learn to swallow. i recall when a portion of the female student body attended college primarily to secure a supposedly better class of screw, which later turned in to ex-husband #1.

Hey baby. That was great. Here's three rolls of quarters. You'd better get something for yourself and buy me a cheese danish with what's left over.

BTW: There's a vending machine here at work that takes credit cards. No Plan B but Hostess Donuts are only $1.

I agree. Something in the body releasing such a huge amount of hormones can have the potential to cause major physiological changes, and of course, there are known risks including death. So yes, women really shouldn't be getting pregnant unless they want to. Good thing there's Plan B.

I wonder how long it will be before college guys are carrying around a dose to slip the liquored-up sorority girl after a night of spontaneous bareback to avoid an unpleasant consequence? Then again, douches gonna be douches regardless.

2012-02-07 08:24:53 AM
Back in my day, we didn't have Plan B. The solution, as I was told by the girlfriend, was that the lady who thought herself to be pregnant just took an overdose of birth control pills.

Don't know if it's true or not but the girlfriend of the time said that it was quite easy to go to campus health and get an extra dose.

Might have been just a campus tall tale. The girlfriend was quite adept at modifying the truth.

Hey if that reduces unwanted pregnancies by an admittedly, terrible lot of people, its a good thing.

Interesting. I knew a girl in university who said that as a last resort she would lay upside down in the shower with her feet propped against the wall and flush out her vagina with warm water and a funnel. Then again, she once claimed her grandfather had flown over the sinking Titanic in a helicopter, so we didn't exactly put much stock in her stories.

My mother was taking birth control pills sporadically when she got pregnant with me. She'd miss a day or two, then "catch up" by taking the ones she'd missed all at once.

A girl I was at university with used to do this with cola. Not diet cola, because that would be retarded, obviously, but full sugar cola. She swore blind that it worked because cola "was full of chemicals and stuff". She didn't drink it, because that would be unhealthy. She is now an accountant working for a large petrochemical concern. I still wonder how she managed to get a degree without gaining 3 kids en route.

I am OK with this. As a libertarian you can put anything in your body you wish.

BUT, if you are at a University you should have the cajones to go to the clinic for medical care.

If you aren't mature enough to use protection, not mature enough to show your face at the clinic, are you mature enough to read all of the Plan B literature to educate yourself on the side effects to watch for?

Also the article suggests it is only carried at one building (and maybe even one machine). So it could also be the only way to reach this vending machine is swipe your student ID at the outer doors. People couldn't just wander in off the street and buy it.

I'm sure it can. But the stuff is already sold over the counter with no prescription needed, so I don't see the big deal about putting it in a vending machine on a college campus.

Also, you know what else can have serious side effects on some people? Pregnancy.

Gimli_Gloin: If you aren't mature enough to use protection, not mature enough to show your face at the clinic, are you mature enough to read all of the Plan B literature to educate yourself on the side effects to watch for?

So, since you're not mature enough, then you should have a baby? Not sure if you've thought your cunning plan all the way through.

Also, maturity is not the right word for all three of those. The "maturity" required to be able to read documentation in a box of pills is not the same as the "maturity" needed to put up with public shaming and humiliation from protesters at a clinic. Perhaps "intelligence" and "courage"? But then your point collapses.
