I have no issue with a quick clean kill. That looks like abuse.

Does animal cruelty laws apply to fish?

With an extremely invasive species like the Asian carp I say let the rednecks have their fun.

"For the foreseeable future, there is still an opportunity for virtually unlimited shooting and harvest of Asian carps by bowfishers, in many parts of the invaded range," said Duane Chapman, a research fisheries biologist for the United States Geological Survey. "Recreational fishers and bowfishers should not feel bad about killing all the Asian carp they want to kill. Every little bit helps." NYTimes article (new window)
Taken from the first article I looked at from a quick google search. I think this is legal and almost encouraged.

I really do have to do some serious asian carp fishing this coming summer. I've heard they're pretty darn tasty and they have got to be the easiest fish in the world to catch.

Yeah all you need is a noisy boat! Don't even need a net. I would totally go harvest a few hundred of them if I lived on that side of the country.

They are gross. But if you think they're tasty you're in luck. Hope you don't care for other types of fish though. And thank Obama too for his administration derailing any attempt to keep this species out of the Great Lakes in favor of the shipping lobby.

Supposedly they taste like a cross between crab meat and scallops. I could go for that. They're a delicacy in some parts of the world; Israel being one of them. That's actually why we have them in the US. They were being farmed in Illinois for sale to Israelies, the Mississippi flooded, and they escaped into the wild.

I sorta figure anything that tastes good and can be hunted will have a hard time taking a real foot hold in the US. If there was ever a people that could solve a problem with firearms and forks it's us.

Except that the Asian carp has not just taken a real foot hold here. It is breeding so fast it's causing other species to have major issues finding food from what I understand. I don't think it is possible to eat them as fast as they appear to be breeding.

Go people watching at a WalMart for a day. You'll change your tune. Common way to prepare them is to deep fry them.

I kid. I realize they're a serious problem, and if they hit the Great Lakes we're going to have a real hard time weeding them out. One suggestion I've heard is to pack the Great Lakes with indigenous species so that the Asian Carp can't get a foothold. Not sure it would work, but it seems like an idea worth trying.

These fish are a big problem, and the way they are "fishing" them is really about the best way. They rarely take a hook. They eat everything and anything, but I've only seen one take a lure once or twice.

I usually fish bass below the locks towards Pekin, and they aren't too big of a problem there. I'm curious where these guys were at. And that was nothing, I was on the Kankakee River 3 summers ago, and it was downright scary.

And the meat is pretty tasty, baked or fried. It's got a bit of a saltwater fish taste to it. But, as stated above, they are a pain in the ass to clean.

oh shiat, I had entirely too many lulz watching that

2012-02-07 01:40:45 AM
My dad always told me that the only way to prepare carp is to place the fish between 2 2x6's and lash it down real tight with some bungee cords or duct tape (duct tape solves everything, btw). Then drive over the boards several times with your car. Finally, separate the fish/board contraption, throw away the fish, and eat the boards. Carp taste like shiat.

I've never eaten Asian Carp, and I'm sure he hasn't either. But it'd take an awful lot of convincing for me to believe that it's anything other than "too much trouble for what it's worth" after looking at all those bones to navigate around.

It seems to me that the overabundance of carp is something that could be solved with just a bit of marketing. Right now, hardly anybody wants to eat fish called "carp no matter how good they really taste. The name looks and sounds too close to "crap". The obvious solution is to give carp a slick and sophisticated-sounding new name that will attract foodies willing to order the fish in restaurants for $35+. This is not without precedent. Nobody wanted to eat something called "Patagonian Tooth-fish" but once it was rechristened "Chilean Sea Bass", it got to be so popular, they've almost been fished into extinction.

I have had some carp prepped by Duane Chapman, they were mighty tasty. He cleaned them a different way that time, the Y bones were left in each piece of fish (about as big as a restaurant chicken strip). The Y bones were no more trouble than the bones in hot wings really.

Bighead and silver carp are filter feeders, and really efficient at it. Other filter feeders include baitfish like shad and the larval forms of pretty much every native fish. The Asians grow too big to be eaten by piscivorous fish and vacuum up all the zooplankton. They threaten larval recruitment of pretty much every native fish in the midwest. We need some sort of patriotic movement to eat them all.

Seriously, your Country Needs You: Eat More Carp!

Moron. Mahi-mahi is renamed dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus, one of two species in the Coryphaenidae family) not those members of the Delphinidae family or Platanistoidea superfamily, which are commonly referred to as dolphins.
