In their defense, that's not a bad strategy. I mean, look at our top rated songs, tv shoes, and movies. Our culture doesn't (and shouldn't) exactly inspire a lot of confidence in the rest of the world. Throw in our politics and refusal to adopt the metric system, and it's no wonder at all why 99.9999% of the rest of the world hates us.

I heard a review of the album on NPR a few days ago where the reviewer liked it. From what I heard in the review, I don't think it wasn't horrible, but nothing I heard made me thirsty for more. She sounded like a very bland shadow of Neko Case, stripped of almost everything interesting and special.
It's the sort of inoffensive stuff my almost-ex-wife would like.

Your argument supports the claim that if America thinks something is good, it must be bad, not that if America thinks something is bad, it must be good. The two are not equivalent.

Autotune is the first step - soon we'll have robots to do all the singing, and pretty girls won't have to pretend they can any more and can just pose and act like they might be willing to have sex with people they'll never meet. They can be pretty, and we can have much more skilled, fun robot songs. We tried letting fat chicks who can actually sing hide in the background, but it just wouldn't move product targeted at stupid kids with money to spend (Adele is a different market entirely). Kids love robots. It'll be grand.

Yeah not a live performer.
There are three categories musicians fall into.
1. Just bad.
2. Bad performers but make good music.
3. Good performers and make good music.
She is a bad performer, but I can see how people like the music on her album.
If someone makes good music I will listen to it.
If their album versions are good I listen to those.
If I find their acoustic versions to better than the album ones, I listen to those instead.
If they are bad live, I won't see them live.
If they are good live, I will see them live.
Admittedly if an artist is good live or good acoustic then I listen to them a lot more than if they just make good songs, and I am drawn to them a lot more. I think in large part because I end up with two versions of the same song, both of which I enjoy but they are different enough that it keeps them from getting old as fast.

I don't really get it with her. I listened to her stuff live and in studio and I just don't get it. What the hell am I missing? It's like most other stuff out there that people think are "new and totally unlike anything before" in which the arrangement drags and sounds uber depressing (fine in some cases, but geez), the singer is singing either an octave too high or too low, and just makes me vaguely feel like a pretentious douche when I'm listening to it. But, it's better than the dubstep crap I've heard (I'm sure there's good dubstep but goddamn do I hate the crap I've heard thus far)
Then again, I'm also someone who doesn't think Kristen Wiig is funny so what do I know?

she's been on decent (like B list) rotation for a couple of months now over here. She was on Jools Holland a couple of months ago as well (though I didn't stay tuned to watch the performance), so I wasn't surprised to hear the album was number one.
Can't say I like it. First time I heard video games I kept expecting it to go somewhere, and it never did. I was turning the station every time it played for quite a while. Now it's Born to Die I hear every day, the first 10 seconds has so much promise then it just keels over.
/imo of course.

Good call, but there are bands/musicians who are good live but don't write very good music.
KISS comes to mind as an example. They never broke big until they did a live album because the appeal isn't the songs as much as it is the look and energy of the shows.
/Don't mean that as a diss on KISS. I respect them for working hard to put on a good show for their fans.

"not for nothing,i can think of a lot of shiat eating, vapid non song writing pop stars that deserve the public ire more than lana del rey. its amazing to me that people are saying she cant sing or shes fake etc. THATS POP MUSIC. at least she wrote her bullshiat herself. all of a suden the world has a standard for pop music? most pop stars wouldnt even TRY not lip synching. that biatch britney wouldnt even sing in the shower much less on snl.

I despise KISS and their music but they do have some chops. I give them credit for being competent musicians. Gene Douchebag Simmons has some pretty cool bass riffs. They're definitely more talented than, say, Green Day for instance. They still suck though, and Paul Stanley's vocals are unbearable.
