It took 20 years of constant drilling to penetrate through 2 miles of ice?
I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I see my GF.

That sounds sweaty and messy. Remember to put a towel down or have darker sheets.

I'm guessing the team made contact with the outside world after all. The last I had seen (last week), no one had heard from these guys in 5 days.

It's not the speed of the drill but the size of the bit.

Drillers trained to be scientists would have finished the job in an afternoon.

Funny how the US team was hardly mentioned as being involved in the process. I bet those Russians snuck out just before the pot of coffee started brewing so they could brag about their drilling to their news media friends.

Somehow I think that any water that hasn't had aeration in a few eons might be just a tad bit skunky.

Not that that would stop anyone, mind you...

The heck with the Nazis, The spooks are already there anyway.

FTFA:
"Yesterday, our scientists stopped drilling at the depth of 3,768 meters and reached the surface of the subglacial lake," the source was quoted as saying. The news agency described the source as saying the team had "finally managed to pierce" the ice sheet into Vostok.

Managed to pierce through to the surface of the subglacial lake sounds like they made it to me. Please explain my misunderstanding using small words if possible.

I liked Night of the Creeps immensely. Most of all the Eddie of Iron Maiden axe-murderer coming through the floor of the old lady's floor. I have to ask, what's the other movie being discussed here?
