Or is it that Chinese people don't actually have accents?

This may not have occurred to you but it turns out that it isn't hot college age Chinese girls making the decision to move manufacturing overseas.

They are underrepresented as C-suite decision makers and often not allowed to sign billion dollar contracts on behalf of publicly traded corporations.

PsyLord: Having never been to Michigan, I'm getting the impression that it's the Alabama of the North.

Actually, East Lansing and Okemos, Michigan have an amazingly high Asian population; One of the larger populations of Asian in the country.

And no, it's not the Alabama of the North; Not even close.

Pete Hoekstra is a Dutch politician from Western Michigan, which is an ultra-conservative armpit of the state with a highly xenophobic, white, Christian population. Holland and Grand Rapids, in particular.

Ann Arbor is the opposite. It's very much like the San Francisco of the north.

Detroit is like the run-down, broken, dying, Cajun-free New Orleans of the north.

Lansing is pretty diversified. People from around the world live there.

Yes, we have area where it's all hicks and rednecks. Every state does. Here it's in the "thumb" area, and in the vast spaces between the major cities, just like everywhere else. If you wander out to cow country, you're more likely to find people who have never met an Asian person in their life. If you drive 20 miles in any direction, you'll find a major town or city where the population is pretty well integrated and diversified.

The state is also home to a lot of Native American tribes, and it's not uncommon to see them in or around their reservations or the many (MANY) casino towns in Michigan.

And the U.P. is like another country. It's Canada in America, but with more euchre and pasties.

About the only parts that are like Alabama are the deep woods in the thumb, and some of the down-south stuff near Indiana. They're isolated little towns and villages, and vast open farmlands where they don't get up to Kalamazoo, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Detroit metro area, Ann Arbor, Saginaw, Flint, Bay City, Midland, etc. very often. I

I'm pretty left-leaning, and I like it here. Well, except for the "no jobs" part.

After a year and a half of Korean language training with the military I walked out sounding like a developmentally disabled Korean 5-year-old. It's really easy to make fun of an adult's attempt at learning a foreign language when you don't have the intellectual curiosity to do it yourself. It's been my experience that the people who deride foreign people for poor English are the ones who would never see the value of being bilingual in the first place.

So it would have been accurate to portray a Chinese peasant as able to speak flawless english without the slightest accent?

watson.t.hamster: So it's fine to say that all our jobs are going to China until someone actually says it, then we're supposed to be outraged?

...Whoosh....
It IS fine to say our jobs are going to China. It's NOT fine to make the Chinese look like they're gloating pricks who hate Americans. Focus on the farking issues instead of raising xenophobia.

2012-02-06 08:32:32 PM
What exactly is so offensive about this? Let's review the premise one more time. He's arguing that government spending leads to outsourcing of jobs. OK, that's a political argument, not offensive. He chooses China as an example. Not offensive, we do outsource some jobs to China. He chooses to have a Chinese person thank Debbie Spend-It-Now for the job. Still not offensive, he's just sticking it to his political opponent.

He chooses an Asian person as the actress - naturally. He puts her in a rice paddy field. OK, starting to get warm, but still not really there. An American farmer in a wheat or cornfield is a stereotype too, but not necessarily offensive. Then she opens her mouth and speaks with this full on Mr. Miyagi Asian accent. And...that's it. A Chinese person speaking English with a Chinese accent is why we are up in arms. You people do realize that native Chinese speakers may speak their second and third languages with accents, right? Just like a French guy would speak English with a Pepe LePew accent, a German guy with a Dolf Lundgren accent, an Indian guy with an Apu accent. These are real accents, just like when we try to speak other languages and we have distinctive accents.

I mean, it would have been more authentic to have her speak real Chinese and subtitle it, but whatever. I'm still not seeing it.

2012-02-06 08:35:32 PM
...by the way, it is not lost on me that two out of my three examples are cartoons, one of which is voiced by Hank Azaria, a white guy, and Dolf Lundgren may or may not be German (I'm thinking Austrian?) That's all beside the point :)
