Aaaaaaaand added to wishlist.

Why was the video only 13 seconds long?

I hope that if you disconnect the hub before clicking on the "safely remove hardware" icon that it does the famous R2 scream.

I was actually curious as to what other sounds it made. The video was VERY short.

Whatever other sounds it makes, none of them will be English for some reason.

I will pass. No 4-port USB hub is worth $31 to me. Even if it is Artoo.

That could get very annoying, very quickly. (new window)

Serious question... if you have only 1 USB port, you plug this in and then you get 4 more?

I thought USB ports were fixed internally on a card or something... but you can just splice a single port into 4 and they all work fine simultaneously?

Since the bandwidth is shared between the four, the more devices you have on it using the bandwidth at the same time, the slower your data transfers.

AND: if the device requires power from the USB port, external hubs require either two USB ports from your machine or to be plugged in with a wall brick to provide sufficient power.

In every way, you're better to simply add a card with more ports directly in your machine... ports are handy, but shouldn't be regular usage... most I've seen with eventually burn the computer's port out.

It's sorta like a phone cable splitter. You should use one that has it's own power source or you may run into trouble with some devices.

Truth is, between all the papers, her Xena stuff, Red Dwarf, etc. she has no frigging space for an R2.

Yes, one USB port can be split into more than one port by using a USB hub.

The data transfer rates will certainly be affected if more than one device is being used.

But we're talking about R2D2 here, so any talk about increased performance by adding in USB cards to the motherboard is deemed null and void.

The spec allows for up to 128 (or is it 127+1 for root hub?) devices to be attached to a root hub, theoretically all of those devices could be doing 'stuff' at the same time but as it's shared bandwidth they will all run really slowly.

Power draw would also become a factor, each device (or unpowered hub) would need to be fed from the machine. Especially if you throw something hungry in to the mix like a slate (the iPad is notoriously hungry) but assuming you were under the maximum or using powered hubs to help out you're fine. Plus some devices can get upperty if they didn't implement the spec properly.

But yes, in theory you can just keep adding hubs and devices up to the 128 limit per root hub and they should all work fine. The worst that can happen is you blow a polyfuse and have to sit there for 20min whilst it resets and figure out what you don't want plugged in.

Sure. Actually, I'm thinking about this because my laptop only has one port, and it would be nice to keep cameras and MP3 players plugged in all the time, instead of having to switch them out.

/thanks

Original MBA? Yeah grab a powered hub (to be on the safe side of them trying to charge up), plug all the cables in to that and the hub plugs in to your machine.

Nahh, little bugger'll sit there for 20min and then go right back to work. You will have to remove all power to it for it to reset but beyond that meh.
