List fails without Quark, and without pre-Sheldon Sigmund and the Sea Monsters (it jumped the shark when Rip Taylor came on board).

If they were going to take the time to specify the original 1951-1959 Dragnet run, they could have found a picture from that run instead of using one from the campy 1960s show.

I had Northern Exposure on my "they missed it" list. Also had X-Files, M*A*S*H, Cheers and Police Squad! (In color).

The Short List is not aptly named.

A lot of those are intentionally and decidedly un-cool. Or does that make them cool? I can't tell any more. Where's The X-Files? 24? And Knight Rider but no A-Team?

3) Absent from said list:

The A-Team

*sigh* I loved that show.

Also, Freaks & Geeks was awesome. I think I was the only person actually in high school who actively tried to regularly tune in while NBC was f*cking with its scheduling.

Nice to see Spaced and Bored To Death on there. List fails without Arrested Development.

Also, I really tried to get into Portlandia. I love nonsense humor, but it just tries too hard. The characters are so odd that we hardly feel anything for them, so it comes across as nothing more than a glorified sketch show.

DrippinBalls:
Combat!

My ol' man was a combat veteran and as a rule, HATED any war movie or TV show with a passion. But for some reason he liked Combat! and watched it every week with my brother and me. He once mentioned it was the only show that featured what he remembered most: walking endlessly in the mud, never having enough of anything, never having a clue as to what was going on, and trying to figure out where his next meal was coming from. It was also the first show to show what we now call PTSD, where a squad member (someone like Fess Parker) simply dropped his rifle and started plowing the fields of an abandoned farm. They just left him plowing and figured the medics would come for him eventually.

And as a special "get off my lawn" comment: it went to hell when they switched to color.

It's on there, as it should be.

Also short-lived without a bad episode:

My So-Called Life
Liquid Television
Undeclared
The Job
Louie (still running but so good it's doomed)

I like a lot of these shows, but the list utterly fails if it's trying to find shows that people won't make fun of you for watching, as per subby's suggestion.

Nobody has ever made fun of anybody for watching Firefly. Ever. Seriously.

Chris Morris made their list three times, for The Day Today, Nathan Barley and The IT Crowd. Does that make him the coolest TV persona of all time?

Brass Eye and Jam also deserve spots on the list.

Along similar lines I would add Knowing Me Knowing You and The Armando Iannucci Shows. And The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Oh and Mock the Week, The Goodies (better than Monty Python) and of course some Scottish comedies such as Chewin the Fat and Rab C Nesbitt. And Only an Excuse? because Scottish football deserves it.

That show actually made being an adult look cool, too. Paul Drake - bantered with the ladies, carried a .45 and wore amazingly cool jackets, drove a Vette. Had his own seat at the Formosa where the waiter would bring him a phone when Perry needed some undercover work done.

MoparPower: Rip Dashrock: I can remember when Miami Vice appeared on tv. I thought that was the coolest show ever. Watched it a few months ago, the magic was gone.
The test of time makes a big difference in lots of television shows.

I need too know something. Rip, when you love the show. I don't mean lately, but before. It was real wasn't it?

I have a theory. I grew up in the 80's/90's and it seems that the 80's were the last decade that had a real style, good or bad. The 60's had a definitive style. So did the 70s and 80s. But what was the style of the 90s and forward? I don't think there was any. So that's why 80s movies and TV seem so much more dated than stuff from the 90s forward.

2012-02-06 04:06:25 PM
Oh, and how could I possibly forget America's coolest comedy - Mystery Science Theater 3000, of course.

I'm going to imagine that, yes, he did. Often.

Many of the women characters in that show where hot as hell.
Loved the look of that period for style and fashion.

How is Perry Mason not on the list?
The only show ever that made smoking look like the coolest thing since the wheel.
I don't smoke, but damn, everyone on that show looked cool as shiat doing it.

Loved Perry Mason - my dad would let me stay up to watch it but always shot me off to bed before they came back from the final commercial. That was when Perry explained how he figured out whodunit. Made me crazy. Oh - also "Checkmate".

The 80's Mike Hammer

My Grandmother loved this show. Someone always gets murdered. Stacy Keach gets his ass kicked, then taps some hot ass. Bad guy gets his comeuppance in the end.

2012-02-06 04:49:59 PM

xanadian: Mugato: The Short List is not aptly named.

A lot of those are intentionally and decidedly un-cool. Or does that make them cool? I can't tell any more. Where's The X-Files? 24? And Knight Rider but no A-Team?

And no Airwolf.

Diss. A. Point.

Airwolf, while entertaining, was simply insultingly retarded from a physics standpoint. Given the number of rounds it fired each episode it would take a fleet of semi trailers to carry all that ammo. There's no way that thing could have gotten off the ground.

Time Traveling Bunnies: Snapper Carr: No Twin Peaks, no Northern Exposure, no X-Files, no Buffy.

DeltaPunch: Nice to see Spaced and Bored To Death on there. List fails without Arrested Development.

Um.... both AD and Twin Peaks were on there.

Having recently finished Spaced, this list has some things going for it.

This. Spaced is all kinds of awesome. Nice to see The Young Ones get some love, as well.

If there was a Star Trek series to be included in that list it'd be Deep Space Nine. Captain Sisko was a straight up G. He was a hard core pimp who got shiat done no matter how dirty his hand s had to get. If Picard was in charge of DS9, we'd all be reading Shakespeare in Dominion language right now. Word up.

Gordon Bennett: Chris Morris made their list three times, for The Day Today, Nathan Barley and The IT Crowd.
