They missed a bunch. West Wing* and Northern Exposure for starters.

List fails without
Quark
, and without pre-Sheldon
Sigmund and the Sea Monsters
(it jumped the shark when Rip Taylor came on board).

If they were going to take the time to specify the original 1951-1959 Dragnet run, they could have found a picture from that run instead of using one from the campy 1960s show.

I had Northern Exposure on my "they missed it" list. Also had X-Files, M*A*S*H, Cheers and Police Squad! (In color).

The Short List is not aptly named.
A lot of those are intentionally and decidedly un-cool. Or does that make them cool? I can't tell any more. Where's The X-Files? 24? And Knight Rider but no A-Team?

1) You damn right "Miami Vice" made the list.
2) "How to Make it in America" did not belong on the list.
3) Absent from said list:
The A-Team
Riptide
Simon & Simon
Rip Dashrock
2012-02-06 02:25:36 PM
I can remember when Miami Vice appeared on tv. I thought that was the coolest show ever. Watched it a few months ago, the magic was gone.
The test of time makes a big difference in lots of television shows.

*sigh* I loved that show.
Also, Freaks & Geeks was awesome. I think I was the only person actually in high school who actively tried to regularly tune in while NBC was f*cking with its scheduling.

In terms of coolness, there was
Homicide: Life on the Streets
, and then everything else.

Nice to see Spaced and Bored To Death on there. List fails without Arrested Development.
Also, I really tried to get into Portlandia. I love nonsense humor, but it just tries too hard. The characters are so odd that we hardly feel anything for them, so it comes across as nothing more than a glorified sketch show.

I'd like to second (or third) M*A*S*H, Quantum Leap, Cheers and Parker Lewis Can't Lose.
But I'd like to add SOAP.
The list was very good with its inclusions, however.

I wonder how much the producers of "Misfits" paid to get their unwatchable crap added to that list.

Combat!
My ol' man was a combat veteran and as a rule, HATED any war movie or TV show with a passion. But for some reason he liked Combat! and watched it every week with my brother and me. He once mentioned it was the only show that featured what he remembered most: walking endlessly in the mud, never having enough of anything, never having a clue as to what was going on, and trying to figure out where his next meal was coming from. It was also the first show to show what we now call PTSD, where a squad member (someone like Fess Parker) simply dropped his rifle and started plowing the fields of an abandoned farm. They just left him plowing and figured the medics would come for him eventually.
And as a special "get off my lawn" comment: it went to hell when they switched to color.

Rockford Files.
First thing I went looking for. And I've never been cooler than when I was watching
Northern Exposure
.
State of Play
, while amazingly brilliant, was a mini-series, not a TV show.

No Twin Peaks
It's on there, as it should be.
Also short-lived without a bad episode:
My So-Called Life
Liquid Television
Undeclared
The Job
Louie (still running but so good it's doomed)
Portlandia is the best comedy on TV right now.
The Third Man

My So-Called Life
Are you kidding me? If I wanted to watch a show about mopey teens in the 90s, all I had to do was show up to high school the next day.
