The Under 30 crowd in Japan today has been programmed to have completely unrealistic expectations about women and relationships due to the way they're portrayed in popular media over there. Combine this with the fact that A. Asians tend to be naturally shy and B. Prostitution is rampant and inexpensive and copious amounts of aberrant pornography make it much easier for men to spend all day playing video games and occasionally dropping a couple thousand yen on a hooker or buying some tentacle rape porn or soiled underwear from the vending machine, much easier than actually going out and meeting people, establishing a relationship, and growing up into an adult.

This is actually one of the few reasons I don't advocate the legalization of prostitution in this country. If you don't actually have to work to get the vagina and can just buy it, then what's the motivation to actually work on becoming less of a socially awkward moron who spends all day playing WoW and sewing Cosplay costumes? We've already got an entire generation of basement dwellers, why eliminate the last motivation they might have to leave mom's house and actually become functioning members of society?

trialpha: Harem type shows seem to have fallen out of favor - or have at least warped enough so that they're not as stereotypical. From my observations, the number of actual plot/storyline anime seems to have increased recently. Not really sci-fi though, so you may be disappointed.

It's already well established here. There's Christian Japanese folks, I knew some in college. They tend to take it too far, though, like many of the non-traditional converts.

By and large, Japanese are Shinto in life and Buddhist in death, but the lack of Christianity in Japan is more historical than anything else (namely they were persistent at pretty much the wrong time in history and served as convenient political scapegoats -- once they were told to leave and then the rest were killed, Christianity lacked any real way to take root).
