He blames it overbearing mothers and distant, emotionally detached fathers who are raising kids who have little sense of how to deal with the opposite sex. That's his opinion, but it could hold some weight.

The fire-bombing of Dresden and other cities in Europe was certainly not concealed from the public. It was in the news-reels and in the papers, as was the bombing of Tokyo. It's just that people had a different moral stance in those days.

I'd like to comment that I have seen various pictures taken after nagasaki of victims(like the man with no face) along with some videos describing skin disintegrating under a doctors touch and I would still have dropped fatman and littleboy if I were to travel back and time and be given command. The reason was is terrible is so that people will not be eager to take it up. It is not meant to be enjoyable.

Otaku culture itself, and extreme otaku culture (such as the examples provided) represents such a small percentage of the Japanese population that blaming it is a fallacy. It is nowhere near as prevalent as we think it is in the west. And the extreme people are considered freaks even over there. If anything, its rise is a symptom of larger issues.

Here's the thing - I've lived in Tokyo for the majority of the last 7.5 years, so I remember what Akihabara/otaku culture were like before the boom (even to my rose-tinted weeaboo eyes back then) and how it's changed (especially now that I've learned the language and moved past that phase). And I honestly think that while the affected population is relatively low, it's still much higher than anyone would like to admit. Have you noticed how grossly oversexualized One Piece characters have gotten as their original audience has aged and reached adulthood, yet it's still advertised as being a Kid's Manga? There's some weird mojo going on in this country sexually and it's causing problems with the population.

Actually, I think the otaku culture is the symptom not the cause of the pressures of Japanese domestic policies. The lawmakers are conservative and the artists are liberal. So you get a confluence of old fashioned ideas keeping the people in the crater of the bubble economy trying to rebuild the salaryman days, in the meantime we're all still striving for a taste of the floating world, as ever, which means we'll take the quickest route. Since members of the opposite sex ask too much, we don't form a relationship like we might have in the past and shiat out the kids like we used to. Instead we pass on their demands and go find a quicker outlet for that taste of heaven on the limited funds of the working poor. Escapism is rampant. Even eikaiwa is a form of it for some. I should know, I met enough of them.

Otaku are just the ultimate escapists. They take it limits others don't. But all of us in Tokyo who are in the lower 3/4 are partaking in the general malaise of the economic unrest caused by high prices and low wages. With just a 10% raise, my lifestyle would be almost completely different.
