Why is he going to Collage anyway? $400,000 would pay for the worlds foremost experts on whatever topic you want to come to your house and give you private lessons (More or less). I feel 100% no sympathy for someone that is willing to spend this much on a car (IE showing off) for there kids to drive around, while he is going to collage when they have a minor financial problem. I mean the cost of parking that car for a week in NY is about the cost of a month worth of cab fairs and 6 months worth of subway.

A college kid with a Bentley? Now THAT'S bootstrappy!

www.personalfinancewhiz.com

Suck it hippies.

But seriously, that car is the nicest thing on the inside I've ever seen. It's like sex...wrapped in supple hand stitched leather. It's so supple you can hear the cows it came from crying in vain as you slouch your bovine buttocks into the seats; as if you were actually crushing their souls...

You're hilarious. People with that kind of money don't go to college for learning, it's for the pedigree.

Well, we could look at it another way and say it's better that these rich kids go to college rather than mooch off their parents for their entire lives.

There's this guy in my office right now who has an Amex Black card, but is working a crappy entry-level clerical/analyst type job. He's humble and pretty hardworking. That said, yeah, he doesn't drive a Bentley to work, so...

You seem to have missed my point completely in a mad rush to be insulting. If I had enough money to buy a $400k car (Which implies you have much much much more), I wouldn't have gone to college. I would have studied lots of things, but I would not have subjected myself to the college system. It just seems dumb. Even dumber is buying a car worth $400k. I could easily afford cars in the $100k range, but I drive late model Hondas, Volkswagans and Fords. Car are a huge waist of money, even more so when you live in NY.

Well for one, I assume he has to keep his parents happy so they don't cut him off. Second of all, why not go to college? You don't get to bang all the college girls by hiring tutors, and it beats working. If I were rich, I'd probably spend my time in college too, what else are going to do with your time?

i can see several reasons why a filthy rich chinese kid is going to an american college

improving english skills, learning how the US system works, building up contacts, and prestige back home.

and a $400k Bentley Continental? that does not sound right. the Azure is the only Bentley that is priced that high.

Doesn't really surprise me that a Chinese student in the US would have a Bentley. He's likely second generation rich, with his father making a ton of money by taking advantage of economic conditions created under Dengxiaoping. His parents wouldn't be college educated and he wouldn't have any leg up on getting into top Chinese universities since it is all based on an English exam that kids start studying for right when they get accepted into high school(They would start studying even earlier, but before high school they spend all their time studying to get into a good high school). So he goes to a US university, where they want him because he pays international tuition and makes them look diverse. And similar to Russia and other countries where you have a lot of newly rich people, more expensive=better and the more obvious somethings brand/logo is the better. They love those shirts with the large logos on them, and all the big designer brands. They also love showy cars and leaving their iPhone out whenever they are at a restaurant to show it off. In fact, because the white iPhone is more obviously an apple product, they actually charge more for the white version than the black version in China.

What's really amazing, is because China has a crappy social support system, these rich families are saving something like 50% of their income and still are able to spend like crazy. Guess that's what happens when you own a dozen factories that make government subsidized solar panels.

The poor are too poor to go to college, and the rich are too rich to need it? I kinda like this. Once you're attained a certain level of wealth, you and your offspring are no longer eligible for higher education. One way to get wealth redistributed within a couple of generations.

The Chinese value education. So even the wealthy send their kids abroad to learn. Sometimes you end up with kids having more money than sense.

If you assume that the only good college can do you is increase your paycheck, not much.

But if you value education for its own sake and care to be around lots of people to socialize and party with and be impressed with your Bentley, including plenty of hot college girls, then it can do you lots of good. Especially when you can effectively study any subject just about anywhere.

It's a right of passage the ruling class use. Paying your dues, then being able to hang the diploma on your wall and make a bunch of friends to network later on in life. Also intelligence agencies in China, Russia, etc. all use these people for valuable information and to befriend powerful people.

One day, I walked out of the post office and there was a Bentley just sitting there and idling. I knew I shouldn't, but I thought "When am I going to get another chance to drive a new Bentley?" This was in fact my first thought. One wonders how many prison-like, brightly-lit electronics factories, their barred windows charmingly festooned with suicide nets, work three shifts to pay for this brat's Bentley. Back to Hongkouver indeed, kiddo.

Chinese traveling abroad are so innocent (yet arrogant) I betcha Richy Rich's wheels weren't even insured, nyaah.

/Recommendation: John Fraser's THE CHINESE, 'Portrait of a People'. Written in the 1970s, so dated in places - but still a fine and insightful read.

2) Throw down storm drain :D

Stupidity has been punished, and any charge against you if you get caught is minimal (you know, compared to grand theft auto).

I've often wondered about this. Imagine some movie actor pulling up to Grauman's Chinese Theater in his Ferrari Superamerica or Duesenberg 'J' Murphy Boat-tail, getting out with his lovely as the flash bulbs start popping and the fans shrieking - while some $9/hour doofus valet who never heard of double-clutching gets behind the wheel and says 'Geez, a manual. Which one is the clutch?'

You gonna let some stranger navigate your Lambo through a parking garage? Sounds all wrong to me.

Pretty much this.

I've worked with a lot of asians and this is what I've learned about them:

asians = cheaters

asians = lazy

asians = one big facade

If you see an asian driving a nice car, ask them what they paid for it. Their answer (although they won't come out and specifically tell you) - their car is leased.

asians = can't think whatsoever. Case in point - everything that's been invented has been done so in the USA... Game Boy... invented in the USA... VCR... Invented in the USA

asians = no "out of the box" thinking whatsoever. They do what they're told to do by the book each and every time.

asians culture/people are nothing to respect. nothing to respect at all.

/Although I do love me some sweet & sour asian female meat!!!

Rich college students are retarded. All of them around here are Indian or Chinese.

We recently had a guy with an R8 try to bribe a cop out of a speeding ticket.

There is a Maserati that I see parked everywhere (including the first few rows at walmart). Apparently he had a GTR until he got too many speeding tickets and his dad took it away.

There's also a generic college subdivision full of rentals that has a Lotus and Ducati just chilling next to the rust bucket toyotas and hondas.
