Bet it was Jesus saying: "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's".

That there is a republican who is more interested in swinging the bible as a club than reading it as a source of philosophical guidance is a complete surprise to me. I thought that they lived their lives by the word of Christ.

They sure SAY they live by the word of Christ...

If they're lying on that I wouldn't be able to trust them. So they MUST be telling the truth.

Why do Republicans hate Jesus?

No, serious question...they clearly hate the Jesus of the Gospels and have replaced him with a supply-sider who never said anything about the poor, the weak, the imprisoned, the cast aside, the sick, the hungry...

If you have to reinvent Jesus to love him, then you don't really love him, no matter how hard you thump that Bible.

Hey look at this, yet another Christian acting as I expect them to. To the rest of you Christians, the ones who always get so mad when I refer to the lot of you as worthless bigots who are a stain on society - I point out yet another example, we get at least one daily, that proves this is the reality of your religion. You have no value. Maybe it really is what you claim, that there are millions of you out there who are good people, but I see no good from you on a daily basis. I see people like these, people like the ones in Michele Bachmann's district who were proud, PROUD, they drove teenagers to suicide in the name of Jesus. You are responsible for these people, because you have not smacked them down.

This is the face of Christianity. Bigotry, child molestation, and simple hatred of anyone who doesn't conform exactly to their ideals. The entire world would be better off without the lot of you.

You know, as a Christian myself, I honestly understand why you feel this way. It pisses me off to no end also.

I can't even believe that the majority of Christians feel the same way as I do, that we should accept all people as God's creations, because the amount of hate that is evident in mainstream Christianity overshadows the silent Christians who do their best to follow God's word to love one another.

I can only hope that this hate goes away soon, but I'm not counting on it anytime soon.

Lansydyr: the silent Christians

You know, as best as I can tell, you don't exist. If there really are as many of you as the few who claim to represent a silent majority usually indicate, why don't you slap these people down publicly? That never happens. There is apparently a majority of Christians who are appalled by things like this, but simply can't be bothered to give enough of a fark to get it to stop. That makes you no better than them.

It's like the actual conservative Republicans. They don't exist anymore, and I have no reason not to treat the average Christian as being someone like this, because experience and all available evidence has told me the actual Christian is a very, very small minority.

Not really disagreeing with you, GAT_00, but personally, I'd call it a failing of religionists in general. The problem is that when you sub in another particular religion, it probably seems rather bigoted. Perhaps the issue is with people who view beliefs as more important than people, whatever their particular cult happens to be.

Every year at Pride in Washington D.C., a full third of the booths are churches, synagogs and even a few mosques. The entirety of the civil rights movement in this country was fought from the basements and pulpits of southern Baptist churches. The Mormon church had mobilized dozens of tractor trailers full of relief supplies before Katrina even made landfall, and got them to those in need before the Federal Government even had boots on the ground.

I'm sure there are more. If terrorists are not truly Muslim then these bigots and men ruled by greed are not truly Christian. It is the duty of all of us to point out that hypocrisy, not just those who follow the same God.

First, I never said "a majority" because I do think that people who believe like I do ARE NOT a majority. There's some truth in Jesus' words when he talks about the narrow path and the wide path. I don't think that he's talking about Christians versus non-christians. There's a verse in Isaiah that has, "judgement will begin at the house of the Lord" which I think supports when Jesus also talked about not knowing many people who will proclaim to be Christian.

Am I silent? No, but I also don't have a national platform with which to present my views. I have a hard enough time trying to prove to my dad that Republicans to claim the loudest to Christian don't follow christian philosophy in the least when dealing with political issues.

Sometimes I feel like Elijah after Jezebel threatened to have him killed. He had just defeated 450 prophets of Baal, had the people's support and ran away discouraged, praying to God to let him die. My hope is when looking at that story, he didn't stay discouraged, he was comforted, and continued his mission.

I can only hope that someday, the majority of people who feel that they are Christian understand the major perversion that has gone on in both the Catholic and the Protestent demonizations. I'm not holding my breath, though.

To a degree, I am pretty sympathetic to people like you, the Christian religion has been so co opted that it's completely and totally unrecognizable to the Christians of only 60 or so years ago. Lets not forget that things like the enlightenment, abolition, workers rights, child labor laws, welfare, etc, were all christian political exercises. I can't say for sure what the hell happened, but, someone, somewhere, figured out that if you equate Jesus with guns and greed, people will flock to it, in the same way that people flock to cars sold by pretty women on billboards, etc.

Goes against the prosperity theology to which most Republicans seem to adhere. "Jesus wants you to be rich - if you're not rich, well, then you're not doing what Jesus wants you to do."

Well then, you're a moron. It was Jesus who said that a camel has a better chance of going through the eye of a needle, than a rich man into the gates of heaven. Christianity was started by someone who hated the upper echelons of society, and if you read the books involved, it's pretty clear that Christianity was a religion by poor people, for poor people. Only the involvement of the Early catholic church changed that and even made it even acceptable to be rich and Christian.

Whoa whoa whoa, they aren't *my* presidential candidates. I vote mostly Democrat, but only because there isn't a viable party to the left.

What you see right now is a party that is slowly marginalizing itself by letting the most radical Christian practitioners run the show. Just because Richard Nixon emphasized these folks who mostly live in the South and allowed them to take the wheel of the Republican Party, that does not mean that most people who are Christian are die-hard Republicans. Most Southern Baptists? I'll agree with you. Most Pentecostals? Yeah, probably. But beyond that...I will just say that in this country, we can agree that the number of people like this is too high.

Then you have to consider other Western countries with sizable of Christian practitioners that are waaaay over the non-issue of gay marriage, universal health care, etc., etc.

I mean, don't get me wrong, there are WAY too many people out there who use religion as a shield for their own bigotry. I'm just saying that the amount of people who don't is actually more than you likely think, and for understandable reason. The crazies are more interesting to hear and read about, in a dreadful way, and their need to feel superior to teh gheys and teh poor peoples (read: blacks and Hispanics and single moms) leads them to push their leaders to take totally un-Jesus-like positions.

Jesus on taxes:

When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins came to Peter, and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the didrachma?"
He said, "Yes."
When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying,
"What do you think, Simon?
From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute?
From their children, or from strangers?"

Peter said to him, "From strangers."

Jesus said to him, "Therefore the children are exempt.
But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea,
and cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up.
When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin.
Take that, and give it to them for me and you."

It's possible to see the teachings of Jesus as valid without thinking Jesus was the son of God. Indeed the validity of the teachings is entirely independent of Jesus and who he was.
