Eight arrested for soliciting undercover male police officers in park include Denny's consultant. Maybe he shouldn't have asked for the "Sausage Slam?"

Protip for soliciting sex: warm up by asking to take a few nude pictures first. Undercover cops will definitely not be into that.

From what I can tell, all they did was ask if they could have sex with the under cover detective. How is that illegal?

I was wondering the same thing. It doesn't sound like they were trying to pay, so the prostitution angle is out. It could be that they asked to 'get it on' inside the park, so perhaps it was attempted public indecency?

Yeah, like one that told them "son, if you're gay that's fine, be proud of it, don't hide it and get married and then sneak into the park at night and get busted for soliciting sex from an undercover cop."

A few years back a co-worker had asked me if I could help get the police to patrol a park near his home. He knew I had connections inside the local department.
Now I know this park to be fairly cruisy but I told him if the police refuse to act then there is really nothing that can be done.
But the folks in Florida take that seriously. And how many of the men on that list were married and considerably older! It's because in their prime it was still illegal in general to be LGBT. I'm glad that's finally changing.

This. If they'd tried to come out in their prime, they'd have been disowned, shunned, and run out of town (or possibly just beaten to death for being a "fag"). They were raised with the idea that they had to do the "normal" thing and marry a woman, have kids, and be miserable. Hence my comment condemning the old school "father figure," who was really just a dictator and a sadist. I honestly pity most men with a father from that era, because even the ones that legitimately thought they had it good, the stories they tell... well, tell a different story.

Despite the guys being arrested and charged with a crime, they haven't been convicted. So it's sad to see their names and all of their personal info (addresses?) put in the paper. Have some cop get caught committing a crime and see how well he is protected from the public. It's not cool that these guys have to be shamed as well, even though they really shouldn't be cruising a public park. The City Hall where I live had to lock the public men's bathrooms because too many guys were being caught cruising the restrooms.

I'm trying to figure this out. Asking someone to engage in anonymous sex in Florida is illegal if it's done in a park, but legal if it's done in a bar? Or is it the gay angle that makes it illegal.
If it's the gay angle that makes it illegal, these cops should just visit the Cubby Hole on US1 in Lauderdale sometime. They have "Underwear Wednesdays" and "Hot Bears on Poles" night. It would save them the trouble of wandering around a park in the dark.

Considering that this is Polk County, that's probably an accurate correction. Lake Wales KKK dude is my uncle's barber, posting the story about that to facebook resulted in me being informed by my aunt that I hate all white people, Americans, and Christians. But especially white people.
TFA is most definitely not going to facebook because I don't even want to imagine the comments it would generate.

Florida's Gulf Coast is an unfortunate mix of midwestern retirees who have grown up without exposure to diversity and southern rednecks who actively hate diversity.
On the bright side, there are enough Mexican, Cuban and other Latino immigrants to support some pretty good latin restaurants.

Things I did not know:
1. There are a lot of married men who are looking for gay sex.
2. News websites are now allowed to report as fact the police version of events, which is disseminated to the public, along with the demographic information of the suspects, without the suspects being convicted of a crime (yet).
What is the newsworthiness of identifying the suspects in this case? While they apparently violated the law in looking for sex at a public place (I guess we would not want this sort of activity with children and families about in a park, yet I doubt they would be anything other than discreet, given what they are doing,) going the extra mile and publicly shaming them seems excessive.

I grew up in an area with a weird mix of rednecks, retirees, European tourists, Hispanic immigrants, and really rich people, where celebrities vacation when they don't want to get photographed. End result is that it was quite possible to be exposed to vast diversity or else insulate yourself with crazy bigots, depending on which circles you chose to run in.
My parents were more inclined to expose us to diversity, certain of my relatives seem to have isolated themselves more and more over the years (and then they moved inland to a Lake Wales retirement community and got even more isolated). The thing that makes no sense though, is that my crazy aunt's son is married to a Colombian immigrant and he and his wife send the kids down to stay with her relatives in Colombia every summer, and yet my aunt has somehow managed to separate that in her brain from all of the crazy Fox News anti-immigrant, everybody should carry papers, English-only stuff.

I don't get the public park gay sex. I really don't. I don't even want to set foot in a nasty public park bathroom, let alone get reared by some middle-aged creep in one. Can some farkers of the homosexual persuasion please explain the appeal? Can't you just use Craigslist for all the anonymous gay sex you want? Without the smell of stale urine and shiat?
And it really tends to be the middle-aged or even older set that you usually see getting arrested and plastered all over the news, trolling for manass in an airport/public park/rest area bathroom.

I agree - names of the accused should be withheld in situations where the crime carries a severe negative social stigma.
From the article though, it sounds like most of these guys decided to volunteer their marital status, employer information, and even which church they attend to the arresting officers. Just another example why your only response to any questioning following an arrest should be 'I request a lawyer'.
