The next pandemic movie should start with patient zero on a cruise ship.

I went on a Princess cruise recently. Best food I've ever eaten, and only one bout of sea sickness.

No, (140+18) + (81 + 9) = "over 200"

How is this news? If someone managed to go on a cruise and not get norovirus, it would be more surprising.

2012-02-04 02:48:34 PM
fta: Passengers set to embark this weekend have been notified that their departure will be delayed a few hours at least as the ships undergo further disinfection in Port Everglades.

If I was about to spend a week onboard a ship that just had a norovirus epidemic, I'd hope it would take more than "a few hours" to scrub the entire goddamn cruise ship.

I once turned down a free cruise due to a fear of being at sea. Now I realize that fear was irrational, and I should direct my fear at the real danger - being on a cruise ship.

Sailed on the Ruby Princess during a 2 week cruise of the Mediterranean a couple of years ago. Awesome vacation. Awesome ship. Didn't get sick.

Going on the Allure of the Seas in two months for a 7 night cruise of the Caribbean. Some guy fell overboard from it last week. Gonna try to avoid that too.

Oh, he didn't fall overboard. Security footage shows he deliberately jumped from the balcony outside his cabin.

Uh, no. If that was the case, there would be flu outbreaks. Viruses don't magically become a totally different virus when you get on a cruise ship.

OK, I screwed this up as much as anyone. The writer got it right. The headline writer screwed up by saying "200," which Subby copied, and here to help accurately noted that -- but forgot the 9 crew on the second ship.

I'll shut up now.

From the CDC . . .

The viruses are found in the vomit and stool of infected people. You can get it by

Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus (someone gets stool or vomit on their hands, then touches food or drink).

Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then putting your hand or fingers in your mouth.

Having direct contact with a person who is infected with norovirus (for example, when caring for someone with norovirus or sharing foods or eating utensils with them).

Well that's just greeeeeaaaaaaaaaat.

So we are trying to plan a trip to Hawaii and one of my friends said he'd rather go on a cruise.

I've never been on a cruise, are they really that fun? I like hiking, bike riding, exploring... what do you do on a cruise all day? As far as I can tell you just eat all day, drink all night, and then when you get somewhere you walk down the main street, buy a tshirt, eat at Margaritaville, and get back on the ship. Is the allure how inexpensive they are? I could totally understand that.

This happened to me a few years ago, my first and only cruise. I had it so bad I ended up acquiring Celiac disease from the incident. Of course, the first thing they gave me to eat the next day was a huge plate of toast, which insured the auto immune reaction. At least I was diagnosed within a couple months.

I hate everything to do with cruise ships with a passion. They are huge steel prisons fouling nature.

There's nothing more romantic than sharing the toilet with your loved one puking and pissing out of your aresholes.

Went on a Caribbean cruise with Holland America about 10 years ago for my honeymoon. We were a fair bit younger than the average passenger seeing as the line was a bit upscale from your typical Carnival party boat, but that was fine as we weren't looking for anything crazy.

The weather was beautiful, the stops were great, and the food was unreal. Only complaint is that unlike a resort, "all inclusive" isn't inclusive of booze, which ain't cheap.

If you haven't done a cruise before, I recommend it, even with all the recent bad press. Waking up somewhere new every day without feeling like you've travelled is awesome.

These stories (and the Titanic, Costa Concordia, etc) are why I will never go on a cruise. Pity, really; I've always wanted to do the Alaskan coast.

In the biz we call that the "Fecal - Oral route", and yes it still makes me giggle.

My cruise was to Alaska. Don't let the stories turn you off. It was one of the best weeks I've had. The stops are amazing (if touristy). But spending all day in Glacier Bay was mind blowing. Seeing the ice calve, spotting whale spouts and an occasional breach, pods of purposes along side the ship. And the food was incredible. But I must say that if you do go, spring for a balcony and bring/buy some nice binoculars. The views left me speechless many times.

Ive only done a cruise once. It wasn't too bad.

However, my family has discovered renting a sailboat or catamaran for a week is much better than a cruise. It's slightly more expensive however you can visit out of the way places, make your own itinerary and avoid the crowded cruise ship terminals/tourist traps. Nothing beats anchoring in a quiet bay and swimming over to the bar for the evening.

That's what I've always wondered. My dad goes on cruises with his new wife and they seem horribly boring from what I gather. I guess because I'm not a big eater and I really hate meeting other couples who want to be single serving friends. I guess my girlfriend and I are just misanthrope assholes. But my dad likes cruises and so I have a sizable collection of t-shirts from vairous exotic ports of call.

We went on an Alaskan cruise two years ago, and it was awesome. My favorite thing was kayaking around Tatoosh Island, as well as in some glacier lake. There were otters, eagles and salmon everywhere. The guide turned a blind eye when I picked up a salmon (damn near took a bite). Heck, even the cheesy White Pass train ride was fun.

We also went on a Bahamas cruise, but we booked a tour with an independent company (not a cruise-organized one). They took us to a pristine snorkel spot and a private beach/tiny island.

Basically, if you're willing to spend extra, the shore trips are worth it. People watching on the ship is fun.

Are there a lot of shenanigans on cruise ships? Like wife-swapping, swinging, or other sexual adventures? That's how I imagine them. Some 50-year-old hausfrau getting the big dick from some gigantic black dude.

Find and download "nasty sounds" soundboard from the android marker.

Find the diarrhea sounds. Play them everytime you think about eating taco bell.

Realize u will sound exactly like that if you DO eat taco bell.

A teacher I had in college told me a story about how he was on vacation in Mexico and he accidentally drank the water, he said, "I spent the rest of my vacation pissing out of my arsehole."
/i don't know why, but i thought it was the funniest thing, and has stayed with me for all these years.

I've been on two cruises--one to Alaska on Princess and one to the Mexican Riviera on Carnival--and my husband and I have come to the conclusion that cruising just isn't our thing. The Princess cruise was classier, but the weather was bad (they can't control this obviously) and the hubby was seasick most of the time from the choppy water. On Carnival the weather was fine, but they would have people dressed in costumes come around and take pictures with you while you were eating dinner and stuff like that. If you are money-conscious there is nothing to do on a cruise except eat at the buffet, maybe swim a little or walk around on deck. Everything else costs money. The entertainment on the boat is okay, but not great. Some of the "excursions" in port can be fun, but you never really get to see anywhere that isn't super touristy because mostly you only stop in each port for a few hours and then move on. I was pretty disappointed in both trips.
