I did not know that debaptizing other people's dead ancestors was an option.

Could you un-baptize Jesus and throw the whole of Christianity out of whack? How about retroactively baptizing the Apostle Peter and making everybody in the West a Mormon? Or weirder still, retroactively baptizing Peter into, say, the Koptic Church, the Marionites, or the Assyrians?

Is the Pope a Rastafarian?

Would you like him to be? The way things are going, there will be an African Pope within a century, maybe a couple of decades. Possibly the Last Pope. See the prophecies of Saint Malarky, I mean Saint Malachy.

Has anyone asked if Harry Reid, a currently higher office holder than Mitt, if he engaged in any of this behavior? Or if he's paid his tithes? Or where he did his service? Or if he wears magic underwear? Or what other unbelievable crazy things Mormons do? I mean, as long as we are throwing out the Constitution and applying religion tests.

I don't think any of those things can really happen, because there isn't any god or gods. They're all created by humans. :)

I don't know, I think part of the point is that the father-in-law didn't want to become a Mormon, and that he was posthumously baptized against his will. Unbaptizing people who actually want to be baptized during life seems kind of like a dick move, and it about equivalent with the douchebaggery of the Mormons who are doing it in the first place.

And here we see the redirection technique being used, as a way to avoid addressing anything actually relevant to the discussion.

Is it possible that some people could not care less about what religion our elected officials practice?

1 In the beginning Man created God;
and in the image of Man
created he him.

2 And Man gave unto God a multitude of
names, that he might be Lord of all
the earth when it was suited to Man

3 And on the seven millionth
day Man rested and did lean
heavily on his God and saw that
it was good.

4 And Man formed Aqualung of
the dust of the ground, and a
host of others likened unto his kind.

5 And these lesser men were cast into the
void; And some were burned, and some were
put apart from their kind.

6 And Man became the God that he had
created and with his miracles did
rule over all the earth.

7 But as all these things
came to pass, the Spirit that did
cause man to create his God
lived on within all men: even
within Aqualung.

8 And man saw it not.

9 But for Christ's sake he'd
better start looking.

This. I'm a Christian non-right winger, and the practice of posthumously baptizing people into the Mormon faith without their consent is absurd and offensive, but I still can't stand Maher even when he's saying something I essentially agree with.

You can't accuse Romney of injecting religion into the campaign--he wishes it would all just go away. It is totally unfair to go after Mitt Romney for his religion. On the other hand, in this election the republicans themselves have established that any accusation or lie is fair game so long as it so long as it benefits the liar politically and he can reasonably deny his participation. Bill Maher isn't running for office. He's a comedian and a satirist, I find his "unholier than thou" attitude as grating as republican smug, but he's within his rights--his Constitutional rights--to make fun of anyone he wants anyway he cares to. Personally I've always found the Mormon posthumous baptism thing creepy and disturbing, but then I usually find Mormons to be creepy and disturbing when they're in full missionary mode, even creepier and more disturbing than other Christian missionaries. They cheerfully consign you to hell, only the Mormons threaten to brainwash you after you're dead.

My real concern here is that the republican nomination process has become so cutthroat and vindictive it permanently scars even the winner. 2000 McCain would have made a great president. 2008 McCain was a nasty old man looking for political vengeance. If Romney or Gingrich get elected, their first goal will be to crush their enemies, of either party, see them driven before them, and hear the lamentations of their women. Their second item of business will be to reward the small number of multi-millionaires and billionaires who single-handedly funded their campaigns. Somewhere way down the list is doing what's necessary for the economy to recover and create jobs. Way, way, way down the list.

The Constitution prevents the government from applying a religious test, such as "Only Christians can run for office". The voters are still free to decide based upon whatever criteria they want.

No, he really wouldn't have. The GOP - including The Maverick(tm)- have been off the rails since at least the impeachment of Clinton. Until they take a hard turn back towards the rational center no republican should sit in the White House, especially one beloved by the Washington establishment like McCain.

Black Liberation Theology is just as screwed up as Mormonism, and Mormonism at least abandoned being a racist religion in the 70s... Supposedly.

Well, perhaps you'd prefer the Roman Catholic version:
"If atheism is a religion, then not buggering choirboys is a perversion".

Or, the Southern Baptist version:
"If atheism is a religion, then not swallowing twenty Oxycontin a day is an addiction".

Or, perhaps, the Satanist version:
"If atheism is a religion, then f**k you, that's why".

I could go on, if you'd like.

i think clinton really did make them lose their shiat. Bush 1 was a war-winning republican president who had enough sense to raise taxes when necessary. He should have won in '92. But he didn't, and I think the GOP really just lost it because of that. I think they saw that if they played by the usual rules of decency and sense, they would always lose. That's why they went full-batshiat.

It would probably only work if someone they had respect for -- or whom they greatly feared -- did it. Otherwise, it doesn't count. No one would pay attention or think anything of it. Koreshiates or Gates of Heavenites could retroactively baptize or unbaptize whomever they what, who would give a fark?

But a group like the Scientologists or (yes) Mormons have a shiatload of real, tangible income and political power. People would start to give a fark, then.

Get Jews to publically (instead of whisper) denounce Jesus or Mohammad............ or Christians to unbaptize Mohammad or denounce Elijah.... or Christians to go full Book of Revelation regarding Jerusalem and Mecca .... that's world war quality.

Bill Maher unbaptizing Mitt Romney's father-in-law is nothing, because it's a joke with no power committed by a person who doesn't believe in the power of his own act. If Bill Maher did shiat like all the time, and got others to also do it, and really believed in it.............. that would be different.
