(Chicago Sun-Times) Interesting After seeing The Grey, Ebert walks out of the next film: "It was the first time I've ever walked out of a film because of the previous film. The way I was feeling in my gut, it just wouldn't have been fair to the next film"   (rogerebert.suntimes.com) divider line 166

Interesting review. Guess I will go with hubby when he goes to this, as he inevitably will, since it has Liam Neeson in it.

A friend of mine saw the film, and wouldn't talk to me about it. He said that he just couldn't tell me how he felt about the film because words wouldn't work. I'd have to see it for myself.

Screw that. I went and saw Hugo instead ;)

I'm very intrigued by this new "Liam Neeson Punches Shiat" genre.

So I guess I need to see The Grey.

it's hard to talk about The Grey without giving away spoilers, but let's just say that it was not the movie that the previews make it out to be.

like last year's Drive with Ryan Gosling.

And, you know, the thing about a wolf... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.

Gripping suspense flick that was about 30 minutes too long. Excellent cast, with standout performances from Frank Grillo and,of course,Neeson.

And the cinematography......Wow.

2012-02-04 04:51:04 AM
All I know is that the trailers make it look horrible. Like it was a bad pitch from 30 years ago that the studio dug up because they didn't have to pay for it. "Man vs Wolves in a Survival of the...Awesomest!"

You mean it's not about aliens?

So are the wolves ghosts of the native people who have had their land stolen by the white man? Or perhaps they are in hell, and the wolves are actually rescuers from another dimension, saving them from hell?

most people were expecting Drive to be more along the lines of Fast and Furious, based on the commercials.

when I saw it at the theater, there were 2 guys behind me who said at the end, "That was it. Boo. We were cheated"

point is, it's not Liam Neeson punching wolves for 90 minutes.

the whole time I was watching it, my mind kept drifting to the Jack London short story, "To Build a Fire".

So do the guys die or not?

No spoilers here, but I loved this movie. I was expecting "Liam Neeson in: Liam Neeson Punches shiat", which in my book is perfectly ok, but instead got something COMPLETELY different. The poster above me who referenced Jack London is spot on - that's what I kept thinking too.

The ending is perfect, IMHO. I had heard there is a final scene after the credits, but I purposely left as soon as they started rolling...the way that this movie ended before the credits was exactly how I wanted it to.

Liam has been in a few kickass and asskicking films recently.

Much better than "whatever new wrestling star wants to act" being the next action star badass.

assjuice: So do the guys die or not?

Not seen it, but it looks like one of those "everyone dies" movies.

And hasn't anyone seen "Never Cry Wolf"? Wolves are generally peaceful and don't attack humans unless they have no choice. At worst, they'd kill one of the group and leave the rest alone.

Tyrone Slothrop: And hasn't anyone seen "Never Cry Wolf"? Wolves are generally peaceful and don't attack humans unless they have no choice. At worst, they'd kill one of the group and leave the rest alone.

That's actually why I'm refusing to see this movie. I adore Liam Neeson, but I can't in good conscience support a film that will further the already terrible and undeserved reputation wolves have. As if grey wolves didn't get a bad enough gig being brought off the endangered species list, only to be added to the 'legal to hunt' list.

Unless there are a lot of wolves. Lots of hungry, starving wolves. Then one person might not be enough to feed them all.

The thing with wolves is, when they're hungry, they're on the hunt, and they're after you.

I saw the movie and have mixed feelings about it. As a Minnesotan, I was mortally offended when at a certain point, a character ends up in an icy river for a very long amount of time, gets out, and goes on his way. Doesn't change clothes, doesn't even really shiver. Yes, it's just a movie, but that bothered the crap out of me.

2012-02-04 09:21:48 AM
Ebert's been senile for quite some time now.

The movie was pretty good but not marketed correctly. In fact, i think there was a shot in the trailer that wasn't even in the film. Oh and there's a post-credit sequence. I find those to be annoying. Samuel L. Jackson recruits him into the Avengers. No wait. That's not it. But there is a post0credit shot.

Just saw Drive too. Beautiful film cinematography-wise. It felt like an 80's Michael Mann movie like Miami Vice or Manhunter.

Currently reading Ebert's autobiography. For a guy who can usually bang out a well-written review, his memoirs are quite a snooze-fest.

And even then, it would take an entire pack just to drop one semi-competent Human, which would likely take out at least two of the dogs in return.

There's a reason we were able to domesticate them.

SoxSweepAgain: So I guess I need to see The Grey.

I was going to skip it because I'm kind of tired of the whole Liam Neeson plays the everyman hero genre, but this sounds like I should see it. Plus there's not much left out there that I haven't seen.

Is this the film where someone gets bitten by a wolf in the wild and when they return to society they unknowingly turn into werewolves?

..because that sounds cooler than some blokes lost in the snow and getting eaten by wolves.

2012-02-04 10:48:39 AM
Ugly Baby Judges You: I had heard there is a final scene after the credits,

Dear Hollywood:

Please farking stop doing this. Especially for special-effects movies that have 20 minute long credits because half the population of New Zealand worked on them.

The first thing I thought when I saw the trailer for this film was "Oh shiat, we're going to start seeing all sorts of calls for increased wolf culls in Colorado and the Northern Rockies now." Ebert's reaction to the film hasn't made me any more optimistic.

2012-02-04 10:55:30 AM
Saw it yesterday.
About 30 minutes too long, most scenes are ridiculously and unnecessarily drawn out, the cinematography is boring at points(imagine staring at snow for 5 minutes), and some of the death scenes are weak. I'd give it 2 out of 5.

Liam was good though, and I was glad to read (earlier this week) that they are making Taken 2.

2012-02-04 10:58:54 AM
Are you telling me that Liam Neeson doesn't dry hump a polar bear after kicking Sarah Palin in the dick?
Still will go see...

Wolves don't form huge packs. In conditions like those in this movies, two packs are far more likely to cannibalize each other than work together, and a wolf is far more likely to try and hunt another wolf than a human armed with a gun. After being pushed to extinction in less than 50 years by us, skittishness towards humans is literally bred into their bones.
