Well, to be fair, the Cubans are only putting their baseball caps over their hearts...

You mean I'm not supposed to face palm during the national anthem, even if the "fans" are booing?

2012-02-04 02:01:58 AM
The Romans cupped their balls when swearing an oath.

This is why its call it a "Testimonial" for an oath, you swear on your balls. Which frankly is probably a more frightening thing to break such an oath, than swearing on a Bible.

Is he going to sing that f*cking song again? Jesus Christ, Mittens. We get it. America makes you hard. You're a disturbing dude. Please just go buy a sports team and ruin that.

Well to be fair Mitt is a mormon so when that picture was taken, those two weren't considered people by the mormon church anyways. Also Mitt cried when his church went and accepted that they have souls, turning his whole belief upside down.

My only recollection from my youth (quite a while ago) of the rules for the SSB was you were supposed to stand at attention and face the flag. I wondered why people started putting their hand over their heart. I vaguely remember reading somewhere where this had been mandated by the congress critters. I like the standing at attention better and continue to do that. Stay of my farking grass.

Mentat: What the fark does that even mean?

It means he still believes in the archaic symbolism passed down from generations past that says the heart is where the emotions and feelings reside. It's a pump, but it's easy to see where the confusion came from.

Let's get one thing clear though: he's looking to garner support with symbols rather than ideas and arguments. That's never a good sign.

But are they corporations?

2012-02-04 06:34:58 AM
I don't do this. Hand over heart is for the pledge of allegiance. Hand over heart for the national anthem is stupid. "I pledge to listen to this song."

2012-02-04 06:37:58 AM
Not a very cool way to treat your Mexican forefathers, Mittens.

"Mitt Romney: We are the only people who put their hand over our hearts during the national anthem. In other news, Chinese, South Africans, Brazilians, Ghanaians, Cubans, Mexicans, and Peruvians aren't people"

I take offense at that.

[Obvious] tag exploded? Ask any Republican: Foreigners aren't people.

2012-02-04 06:43:54 AM
Ok, so even if he was right and Americans were the only people who put our hand over our heart during the national anthem, so what? At some point in the campaign, Mitt and/or Republicans will complain (I know, right?) that their message didn't get across to the American people. Yet he's wasting precious time talking about nonsense like this. Oh well, I guess it's step up from arugula. At this rate maybe Republicans will be discussing issues by 2055.

2012-02-04 06:45:06 AM
This looks more like a "hail Romulus" than putting your hand over your heart.

2012-02-04 06:59:51 AM
To be fair, those furriners are like Gingers, and thus without souls. Souless automatons that pretend life, so their hands over their hearts is just playing pretend, and thus don't count.

Obviously...

AKTurkey: I don't do this. Hand over heart is for the pledge of allegiance. Hand over heart for the national anthem is stupid. "I pledge to listen to this song."

Indeed. I had never even heard of the practice of putting hand over heart for the anthem until the 2008 election.

Not to disagree necessarily, but the "hand over heart" is a salute; it's the civilian version. In the military, when the anthem is played, not only does everyone on a military base salute (military salute for those in uniform, hand-on-heart for those out of uniform or civilians), but all traffic everywhere on base stops. Those walking come to attention, face the flag and salute, and those in cars or buses stop the vehicle and sit at attention until the music ends. It's intended as a sign of fidelity and respect. Just my $.02

For real? That was drilled into people my age since we were kids, and that was like, forty years ago. I'll still remove my hat and/or put my hand over my heart during the Anthem. I may not like the country the way it is now, but I like the best it can be, so I salute that.

Considering all the droolingly stupid things Mittens has already said this campaign season something like this barely bumps the needles on the Tardometer.

I'm still waiting for him to say his first action will be requiring people to stand for Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American"

Same here. But I'm only 50, maybe it was common practice before my time. In any case, just feign mindless enthusiasm, citizen, if you love your liberty.

It's not standard to do that. You put your hand over your heart during the pledge of allegiance. During the national anthem you stand at attention. But I'm sure this comment was just to renew the Republican poutrage over this infamous picture, in which Obama's the only one who's doing it right:

At least he doesn't think there are 57+ states like our retarded president.

Obama is without question the stupidest person in American politics in the last 150 years. He makes Quayle and Palin look like Einsteins by comparison.

How could this guy be so stupid as to think there is anything other than 50 states? EVERY 6-year-old in America knows this, even kids of democrat parents.

I just recently learned this while visiting the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB this past fall. It seemed pretty cool actually, but I imagine it gets old after a while.

My mom's husband -- and Army veteran 25 yrs. retired -- said back in the day if it was getting close to 5 o'clock and you were leaving base you'd try to hurry up and get through the gates so you wouldn't have to do the stop-your-car-and-get-out thing.

If I were to accept this as real, I would go mad.

But you're just being stupid and unoriginal if you make fun of something stupid Obama said years ago.

Bucky Katt: Mitt is a super patriot and he loves America more than you do.

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

Let us take a patriot, where we can meet him; and, that we may not flatter ourselves by false appearances, distinguish those marks which are certain, from those which may deceive; for a man may have the external appearance of a patriot, without the constituent qualities; as false coins have often lustre, though they want weight

This.

Although the legend that Romans swore by cupping their balls (or having their balls cupped, as described in the bible) may or may not be true.

The bible version makes the most sense. If I have you by the balls, you have a pretty good incentive to tell the truth, or at least make me believe you...

I still refuse to believe that the last words of the national anthem aren't "Play ball!"
